A Content Analysis Of Doubt: How Latter-Day Saints Interact Online When One Of Their Own Seeks Answers, Leilani Naomi Mascio, Ronald Smith
Midwest Social Sciences Journal
This content analysis examines how members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) interact with doubting members in online forums, focusing on Facebook and Reddit. Analyzing 1,115 comments from four public posts (August 2024–January 2025), six emergent themes characterize these interactions: (1) normalizing doubt, (2) thought-terminating clichés, (3) bringing back to the fold, (4) hierarchical escalation, (5) attributing doubt to Satan, and (6) emotional reasoning. Findings reveal that LDS members overwhelmingly dominate these discussions, employing doctrinal language, personal narratives, and appeals to authority to reintegrate doubters. Notably, non-member interference was rare, suggesting moderated or self-selected engagement. The …

Is Eucharistic sharing, then, properly seen as the culmination or the inception of Christian initiation? This is a big question getting right to the heart of “how Baptism forms us.”
I want to get at this in two distinct but related ways; (1) the rank and dignity of baptism in Lutheran Liturgy; and (2) the relationship of Eucharist to Church.

(excerpt) "I had an interesting experience last month writing an article on Christian healing for a journal of medicine. The parameters of the requested article were a bit vague, and as I prodded the editor with questions I realized just how much I was in un-chartered territory. The familiar concepts (or, more to the point) the familiar assumptions that are part of an insider conversation theologically and ecclesiologically were missing, and I found myself having to carefully spell out the focus of what I thought might be helpful to discuss in a journal read solely by health professionals. The experience …

"Not Bach [brook], but Meer [sea] should be his name," Beethoven once said of Johann Sebastian Bach. 1 In this anniversary year marking the two-hundred and fiftieth year of his death on July 28, Bach is receiving extraordinary attention, which includes a significant biography by Christoph Wolff,2 yet another series of recordings of all the cantatas (that makes five3), and soul-searching among various scholars in an attempt to grasp the essence of this person's life and work.

In honor of David Truemper, who taught me the Lutheran Confessions, I want to begin with a quotation from the Large Catechism. Luther writes: Thus we see what a great and excellent thing baptism is, which snatches us from the jaws of the devil and makes God our own, overcomes and takes away sin and daily strengthens the new man, always remains until we pass from this present misery to eternal glory. Therefore let everybody regard his baptism as the daily garment which he is to wear all the time. Every day he should be found in faith and …

In his book, Grace Notes and Other Fragments, Joseph Sittler wrote: "Most ministers are aware that it is a tough and delicate labor to insert the lively power of the Word of God into the rushing occupations and silent monologues of human beings." (p. 64) Two occasions at which the insertion of the lively power of the Word of God into the lives of people is a particularly tough and delicate labor are weddings and funerals. In the assemblies gathered to mark these life passages the pastor will, in many cases, be encountering a significant number of persons, perhaps …

The restoration of the catechumenate in the Roman Catholic tradition since the promulgation of the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) in 1972 has been a most surprising pastoral success. Given its size and complexity one might have predicted that the RCIA would simply be ignored or dismissed as irrelevant.

About 110 Christians from across the U.S. recently gathered on Chicago's South Side for a three day conference to examine and reflect on the Kairos Document of South Africa. They were joined by dozens of southern Africans, including several who were at the heart of that document's genesis, and who shared with participants some story of the document's unique evolution as 'Challenge to the Church: A Theological Comment on the Political Crisis m South Africa.'

Today, the liberating movement of faith and a new cycle of societal change coincide to bring our churches and North American society itself to a turning point. The ecclesial and social situation alike call for a new era of ministry to make a public difference. My presentation will focus on the ethical contours of faithful community empowered by the living Word, and some public dimensions of parish ministry that responds to the Word through social witness.

Church leaders in El Salvador, the U.S. and Europe have firmly denied accusations by a member of the non-governmental Human Rights Commission that the leader of the Lutheran Synod of El Salvador is a member of the Communist Party.
In a May 30 press conference, Luz Yaneth Alfaro Pena linked humanitarian and church-based organizations to the Faribundo Marti National Liberation Front (FMLN), a guerrilla federation aiming to overthrow the Salvadoran government.
