Resonances Of Universalism In Tolkien's Legendarium, Nick Polk
Resonances Of Universalism In Tolkien's Legendarium, Nick Polk
Journal of Tolkien Research
Presented at the inaugural Holy Moot, a survey of a collection of passages from Tolkien's writings that demonstrate having the resonances of patristic universalism is conducted. It is then argued that all Tolkien’s writings be investigated separately in their context, comparing the location of each item under investigation with one another, and explore their connections without syncretizing them into a monolithic construct. To do this, it is argued that a hermeneutical theory rooted in the philosophy of Alfred North Whitehead is necessary. Concluding is a connecting of Whitehead's understanding of the expression of language with Tolkien’s own understanding of expression …

A Word Fitly Spoken, Michael Cobbler
A Word Fitly Spoken, Michael Cobbler

Let the people say "Amen!" Amen. I can't hear you. AMEN! Thank you, Jesus. Christ is risen! He is risen, indeed. Alleluia, alleluia! I like to say, when I gather with folk who care about what we do after we say "I believe," when it comes down to ultimate things, I'm just a nobody trying to tell everybody about somebody who can save anybody. Let me run that by again, so everybody can give a rousing "Amen" I'm just a nobody trying to tell everybody about somebody who can save anybody. Amen. And the task I have today is …
Asking New And Old Questions As We Remember The Future, Marva J. Dawn
Asking New And Old Questions As We Remember The Future, Marva J. Dawn

Let me explain my title, "Asking New and Old Questions as We Remember the Future." Because my training is in biblical ethics, my approach to various worship concerns centers on asking questions (the proper work of ethics) about how our worship practices form us to be God's people. If we are interested at this conference in what our "eschatological tradition" has to say to issues of worship, then we will discover the more new questions we ask, the more they will drive us back to the old ones. Indeed, "there is nothing new under the sun." Always, throughout human …

In the Sunday New York Times from March 16, 1997 a short piece with accompanying picture offered a report on a weekly liturgy at St. Mark's Episcopal Cathedral in Seattle, a liturgy which is very popular with young people. Entitled "The Faithful Are Casual at This Sunday Service," the article concerns a forty-year tradition of doing sung compline in a space which is almost totally dark except for about fifteen male singers, bedecked in cassock and surplice, who stand dimly lighted at portable choir desks. Young people hurry to the 9:30p.m. service to sit in the pews, lie prone …
Living Word: Sharper Than Any Two-Edged Sword, Edgar Krentz
Living Word: Sharper Than Any Two-Edged Sword, Edgar Krentz

The theme for this year's Institute on liturgical Studies-"Grace Upon Grace: Living Word."-describes what should enliven and move every action among God's people. Not only doxological actions, but didactic, kerygmatic, evangelistic, parenetic-you name it, every thought and action should live in and arise out of the living word.l But just what is that living word? The adjective is striking, not the one we usually attach to the term "word" in either its garden variety meaning or its theological sense. Where do you find a living word? The classical answer for many is obvious: in the prophetic and apostolic Scriptures. …

In honor of David Truemper, who taught me the Lutheran Confessions, I want to begin with a quotation from the Large Catechism. Luther writes: Thus we see what a great and excellent thing baptism is, which snatches us from the jaws of the devil and makes God our own, overcomes and takes away sin and daily strengthens the new man, always remains until we pass from this present misery to eternal glory. Therefore let everybody regard his baptism as the daily garment which he is to wear all the time. Every day he should be found in faith and …

In his book, Grace Notes and Other Fragments, Joseph Sittler wrote: "Most ministers are aware that it is a tough and delicate labor to insert the lively power of the Word of God into the rushing occupations and silent monologues of human beings." (p. 64) Two occasions at which the insertion of the lively power of the Word of God into the lives of people is a particularly tough and delicate labor are weddings and funerals. In the assemblies gathered to mark these life passages the pastor will, in many cases, be encountering a significant number of persons, perhaps …

AMERICA'S LARGEST RELIGION IS more often blamed for creating our environmental problems than credited with helping to solve them. Indeed, ever since historian Lynn White, Jr., published "The Historical Roots of Our Ecological Crisis" (Science magazine in 1967), the anti-earth nature of Christianity has become standard doctrine in environmental circles. (Mother Earth News, Nov/Dec issue, repeated this truism in their "Open Road" column.)
The quote above from the first chapter of Genesis forms the backbone of White's-and others'-arguments that Christianity is an anti-ecological religion. And certainly, the notion of subduing the earth and taking dominion over its creatures does sound …
Making A Public Difference In The Ministry Of Word And Witness, Dieter T. Hessel
Making A Public Difference In The Ministry Of Word And Witness, Dieter T. Hessel
Institute of Liturgical Studies Occasional Papers
(Excerpt)
Today, the liberating movement of faith and a new cycle of societal change coincide to bring our churches and North American society itself to a turning point. The ecclesial and social situation alike call for a new era of ministry to make a public difference. My presentation will focus on the ethical contours of faithful community empowered by the living Word, and some public dimensions of parish ministry that responds to the Word through social witness.

Concordia Lutheran College of Austin, Texas, has begun a program to equip laypersons for serving in their respective congregations or areas in various forms of ministry
The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, in its 1977 Dallas convention instructed the college to develop a program that could aid the Hispanic Lutheran congregations in the United States in carrying out their Christian mission by better utilizing the ministry of laypersons interested in serving their Lord, but not able to leave their homes for various reasons, in order to seek preparation for such ministry. The goal of the program is to prepare people without any …
Charisms And Ordered Ministries In The New Testament: An Overview, Ivan Havener
Charisms And Ordered Ministries In The New Testament: An Overview, Ivan Havener
Institute of Liturgical Studies Occasional Papers
(Excerpt)
That charisms and ordered ministries existed in the New Testament period is not a matter of dispute today, but what has been and continues to be controversial is the relationship of charisms and structured ministries to one another, when and how ministries became ordered, whether ordered ministries are a legitimate theological development, and whether a variety of ministries and charisms still has a place in the church of today, precisely because a variety of these existed in the New Testament.1 Blanching at the huge amount of literature which has been produced on these topics, I offer here some personal …

Fred Hampton, Illinois chairman of the Black Panther Party, is dead. So is Panther Mark Clark.
State's Attorney Edwin Hanrahan in a TV interview commended the officers who "bravely and with restraint" participated in the pre-dawn raid on Thursday December 4, when the shoot-out occurred.
Many in Chicago's black community and many whites are convinced that Hanrahan's men murdered Hampton as he slept.
