The Role Of Food And Culinary Customs In The Homing Process For Syrian Migrants In California, Sally Baho Jan 2020

The Role Of Food And Culinary Customs In The Homing Process For Syrian Migrants In California, Sally Baho

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

This interdisciplinary thesis explores the foodways of six Syrian migrant families, both immigrants and refugees, in California and the role that culinary customs play in their homing process. The homing process is the dynamic way in which people create home according to their life circumstances: food, eating, and culinary customs after migration in this case. Home is not only the place where people live, but also, where they come from and how they feel comfortable; home is both a physical space and an abstract concept. Home, and the various definitions of home, are mapped out in this project because understanding …

Kinder And Less Just: A Critical Analysis Of Modern Gleaning Organizations And Their Place In Food Recovery Discourse, Anna Clare Gorman Jan 2019

Kinder And Less Just: A Critical Analysis Of Modern Gleaning Organizations And Their Place In Food Recovery Discourse, Anna Clare Gorman

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The practice of gleaning began as a way for the poor to provide sustenance for themselves and their families. Changes in societal ideas about private property as well as a shift toward a neoliberal style of governance have caused gleaning to become what it is today: a practice primarily undertaken by charitable organizations, nonprofits, and church groups who then donate their bounty to local food banks, providing fresh produce to the food insecure. In modern society, gleaning is often held up as a single solution to the problems of food insecurity, poor nutrition, and food waste. This thesis complicates that …

From Frozen Turkeys To Legislative Wins: How Food Banks Put Advocacy On The Menu, Stephanie A. Galinson Jan 2018

From Frozen Turkeys To Legislative Wins: How Food Banks Put Advocacy On The Menu, Stephanie A. Galinson

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

U.S. food banks emerged thirty years ago as part of a temporary, charitable food assistance safety net to address government welfare shortfalls. Over time their size and scope expanded significantly alongside growing food insecurity. As government entitlement programs continue to erode, the ensuing institutionalization of food banks secured their future. Yet scholars such as sociologist Janet Poppendieck argued over twenty years ago that these charitable programs inadvertently prevent the government from reassuming responsibility by providing the public the illusion of a solution despite their inability to adequately meet the need. This research argues that food bank advocacy can be used …

A Study Of Time Orientation, Temporal Integration And Reading Comprehension: Back To The Future, Tacey L. Ruffner

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Problem. Lower-track high school students' combination of poor reading comprehension, present time orientation and shortened temporal integration is an area that has been identified in a range of divergent literature, but little studied in terms of educational practice. Previous research into time orientation and temporal integration has failed to investigate a connection with reading comprehension. Purpose. The purpose was to determine if there is a relationship between time orientation, temporal integration, reading achievement/high school track level and reading comprehension. Procedures. Two measures, a Time Orientation Questionnaire and a Cloze Test of Reading Comprehension, previously identified and pilot tested, were employed. …

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Reaction To Social Pressure From Adults Versus Peers Among Mexican, Mexican-American, And Anglo-American Rural Children, Ana Maria C. Donini

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this project was to investigate whether there was a significant difference in the adherence to conventional morality and the reaction to social pressure from adults versus peers among Mexican, Mexican-American, and Anglo-American children. The instrument used was the Moral Dilemmas Test (MDT) developed by Bronfenbrenner, Devereux, Suci, and Rodgers, which measures the reported readiness of children to engage in morally disapproved behavior and their reaction to social pressure exerted by adults and peers. The subjects were asked to respond to a series of conflict situations under three experimental conditions of confidentiality, scrutiny by parents, and scrutiny by …

The Social Thought Of Clarence Edwin Ayres, Henry M. Gregory Jan 1977

The Social Thought Of Clarence Edwin Ayres, Henry M. Gregory

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

It is the thesis of this study, that although Ayres’s theory of progress is damaging to his sociological theory as a whole, his theory of the basic dichotomy of social action, that of technology and ceremonialism, deserves greater credit than it has received and is profoundly significant sociologically.

A Study Of Selected Walt Disney Screenplays And Films And The Stereotyping Of The Role Of The Female, Jerry P. Houseman Jan 1973

A Study Of Selected Walt Disney Screenplays And Films And The Stereotyping Of The Role Of The Female, Jerry P. Houseman

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Given this large involvement that children have with motion pictures, an educator is moved to inquire into the possible effects that movies might have upon them. It, therefore, seems appropriate that an educational dissertation be undertaken concentrating on Disney Production films, since as indicated by the foregoing, they are so universally viewed by American children.

Statement of the problem:

This study attempted to (1) analyze the five screenplays listed on page 6, (2) show two Disney films based on the screenplays analyzed to groups of children and administer a questionnaire to them. The investigator used the obtained data to determine …

An Analysis Of Attitudes Of Members Of The Church Of The Brethren In The Pacific Coast Region, Merlin Leroy Clark Jan 1951

An Analysis Of Attitudes Of Members Of The Church Of The Brethren In The Pacific Coast Region, Merlin Leroy Clark

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The hypothesis of this study is that there is a relationship between race attitudes and "denominocentrism, " and with certain social categories, e.g., age, social class, income, education, etc., in the Church of the Brethren in the Pacific Coast Region. If a relationship can be identified and analyzed, the results will be of value as tools in helping to understand, predict, and change human behavior. It might be further suggested that if there is a strong relationship between attitudes and certain social categories in the church, attitudes of the Brethren on these issues, and perhaps on many more, are, to …

The Sociological Aspects Of Mexican Immigration To The United States, Bert Ira Van Gilder Jun 1931

The Sociological Aspects Of Mexican Immigration To The United States, Bert Ira Van Gilder

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The question of immigration has always been a part of American thought. It is often said that all Americans are immigrants; that the only real American is the Indian. But this assertion is open to argument as the anthropologist tells us that the Indian is but the descendant of some other race which came to these shores thousands of years ago.

Be that as it may, the fact remains that this country is peopled by representatives of many races and nationalities, many of whom were born in a foreign land.

In this study of Mexican immigration, the subject has …

Source Materials On The History And Development Of The San Joaquin River And The Stockton Deep Water Project, J. Norman Wenger

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

It has been the object of the writer to compile as complete a bibliography, as the time allowed, on the History of the Deep Water Project at Stockton, California.

...

The thesis proper has been directed to cover the major attempts to deepen the water channel from Stockton to San Francisco. Much of this material is not in a form to be readily accessible to the layman so I have included a great deal of it in the form of an Appendix; thus bringing it together, but not making it necessary for the reader to review it unless he or …
