Discovering Your Possibilities: From Risk To Resilience: Does The Discovering Your Possibilities Progarm Increase Academic Success And Resiliency In At-Risk Youth?, Kathleen Furlong

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to evaluate whether or not a school-based program designed to increase academic success and resiliency in at-risk grade 10 students met its objectives. The study sought to assess the null hypothesis that there is no relationship between academic performance, as identified by student engagement, and the intervention, and that there is no relationship between resiliency and the intervention. The study investigated two research questions. Does the intervention, the Discovering Your Possibilities (DYP) program increase students' academic success, as identified by student engagement: increase in attendance, decrease in lates, improved credit accumulation and increase in …

Conceptualizing Academic Entitlement: What Are We Measuring?, Jeffrey Reinhardt Jan 2012

Conceptualizing Academic Entitlement: What Are We Measuring?, Jeffrey Reinhardt

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The issue of academic entitlement has received increased attention from researchers in recent years. While these studies have attempted to measure academic entitlement (AE), these attempts appear to be assessing differing dimensions. As well, attempts by these studies to define AE have been either inconsistent or non-existent. The aim of the present study was to determine the dimensions of AE and place it within a nomological network. An exploratory factor analysis indicated that there were seven distinct dimensions of AE, which include narcissism, professors agency, arguing for grades, expectations for grade increase, professors etiquette, reward for effort, and input on …

Examining The Relationship Between Team Cohesion And Self-Presentation, Alison Divine Jan 2012

Examining The Relationship Between Team Cohesion And Self-Presentation, Alison Divine

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Within team sport, cohesion is not only associated with group level outcomes such as performance but also with individual outcomes, which may include a sense of protection and security. These benefits of group membership are related to reduced levels of anxiety associated with self-presentational concerns (Carron, Estabrooks, Horton, Prapavessis, & Hausenblas, 1999), which are inherent in sport competition (Leary, 1992). The purpose of this study was to examine how self-presentational concerns are predicted by perceptions of cohesion. It was hypothesized that high cohesion would be associated with low self-presentational concerns. A total of 163 competitive team sport athletes completed the …

Ontario Ice-Hockey Participation For Male Youth Between The Ages Of 10 And 15 Years: An Examination Of The Relationship Between Relative Age And Dropout Rates, Srdjan Lemez

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Sport is one avenue through which positive youth development (PYD) can occur (Jones et al., 2011). While some aspects about sport participation are positive, structural issues and registration cut-off dates may detract from positive development. The relative age effect (RAE) suggests that athletes born in the first two quartiles of a given selection year experience a selection advantage and therefore a greater opportunity for success. The purpose of the present study was to examine the relationship between relative age and dropout rates of Ontario Minor Hockey Association male ice-hockey players from ages 10 to 15 years (n=14,325). From chi-square analyses, …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In November 2003 the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court sent issued a controversial ruling in favour of same-sex marriage in Goodridge v. Massachusetts Department of Public Health. In the decade preceding the Goodridge decision, the majority of US states had passed Defense of Marriage Act statutes, barring recognition of same sex marriage, and in the years following Goodridge many states passed constitutional amendments to define marriage between one man and one woman. What sets Massachusetts apart from the rest of the United States on this issue? Through the analysis of Massachusetts newspaper reports, archival material, and interviews with lesbian and gay …

Comparing Two Models Of Employee Engagement: An Examination Of Antecedents And Outcome Variables, Neli Remo Jan 2012

Comparing Two Models Of Employee Engagement: An Examination Of Antecedents And Outcome Variables, Neli Remo

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Employee engagement has been a popular concept among business practitioners, while in the academic literature, the concept remains relatively new. In order to compete effectively, companies must inspire employees to apply their full capabilities to their jobs and perform at a top level. Employees who are energetic and dedicated to their work can make a true difference for companies that want to create a highly efficient and productive organization (Bakker &Leiter, 2010). Given that practical interest in work engagement has surpassed the available research evidence, questions such as what impacts employee engagement and how it benefits individuals and organizations, still …

The World Bank And Biopolitical Governance: The Armm Social Fund Project, Marie Fuki Jan 2012

The World Bank And Biopolitical Governance: The Armm Social Fund Project, Marie Fuki

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis analyzes the policies and practices of development as a biopolitical technology for managing culturally perceived `risky' populations in the southern Philippines. Since post-9/11 and its reinforcement by the war on terrorism, the interrelations of security and development underscore the proliferation of securitized discourses that operate within and beyond transnational aid organizations. Within this security-development nexus, I focus on the World Bank's ARMM Social Fund Project. I analyze its techniques of generalized descriptions, quantifications, and responsibilization that aim to shape individuals occupying the ARMM `borderland' as a governed entity. I reveal how these biopolitical techniques guide the actions of …

Exploring New Capacities For Pitx3 During Xenopus Embryogenesis, Lara Nicole Hooker Jan 2012

Exploring New Capacities For Pitx3 During Xenopus Embryogenesis, Lara Nicole Hooker

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Pitx3 encodes a homeodomain transcription factor that represents the causative locus for the aphakia phenotype in mouse as well as congenital cataracts and anterior segment mesenchymal dysgenesis in humans. Mutations in Pitx3 can also lead to the development of Parkinson's disease. A conserved role for Pitx3 has been established in the terminal differentiation and maintenance of lens fibres and dopaminergic neurons within the midbrain. Pitx3 has also been reported to contribute to skeletal muscle differentiation in mice. Through the use of morpholino-mediated knockdown, the Xenopus model system has allowed further refining of putative roles for pitx3 during embryogenesis. We report …
