Investigating The Effect Of Relative Humidity On Organic New Particle Formation From The Dark Ozonolysis Of Biogenic Volatile Organic Compounds, Austin Callum Flueckiger

Graduate College Dissertations and Theses

Solid or liquid particulate matter suspended in the air, also known as atmospheric aerosols, are a ubiquitous component of Earth’s atmosphere. It is important to understand the chemical and physical processes that lead to the formation of these aerosols as they have an impact on climate health and human health. An important subset of atmospheric aerosols are secondary organic aerosols (SOA) that form from the gas-phase oxidation of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). VOCs can be emitted via biogenic and anthropogenic pathways, however, global estimates place biogenic sources as the major contributor. Although widely studied, some of the fundamental mechanisms that …

Graduate College Dissertations and Theses

Hemlock woolly adelgid (Adelges tsugae) is a non-native, invasive pest of eastern hemlock (Tsugae canadensis) and Carolina hemlock (Tsugae caroliniana), both of which are considered important foundation species in forest ecosystems. Adelges tsugae has caused widespread decline and mortality of hemlock trees in eastern North America. Native hemlocks are particularly vulnerable because of the absence of co-evolved plant defenses and lack of natural enemies of A. tsugae. Managing A. tsugae through development of a biological control program has great potential at the regional level. Two species of silver fly from the Pacific northwest (PNW) Leucotaraxis argenticollis and Leucotaraxis piniperda are …

‘The Real You Is Sexy!’: A Discursive Analysis Of Body Positive Performance By Aerie On Instagram, Kelsey Brown

UVM Patrick Leahy Honors College Senior Theses

Body positivity is an online social movement that emerged largely on social media that aims to challenge dominant ideologies and representations of female beauty that can be harmful to body image. The openness of this movement allows for corporate co-optation, where brands attempt to take on the role of a participant. Though seemingly well-meaning, corporate body positive initiatives fall short by their reinforcement of conformity, promotion of postfeminist themes in feminist packaging, and obligated consumerism. This project uses a Critical Discourse Analysis to investigate ideologies within the discourses shared by the intimates and swimwear clothing brand aerie in their posts …

Non-Market Food Practices Do Things Markets Cannot: Why Vermonters Produce And Distribute Food That's Not For Sale, Sam Bliss Jan 2024

Non-Market Food Practices Do Things Markets Cannot: Why Vermonters Produce And Distribute Food That's Not For Sale, Sam Bliss

Graduate College Dissertations and Theses

Researchers tend to portray food self-provisioning in high-income societies as a coping mechanism for the poor or a hobby for the well-off. They describe food charity as a regrettable band-aid. Vegetable gardens and neighborly sharing are considered remnants of precapitalist tradition. These are non-market food practices: producing food that is not for sale and distributing food in ways other than selling it. Recent scholarship challenges those standard understandings by showing (i) that non-market food practices remain prevalent in high-income countries, (ii) that people in diverse social groups engage in these practices, and (iii) that they articulate diverse reasons for doing …

Computing The Canonical Ring Of Certain Stacks, Jesse Franklin Jan 2024

Computing The Canonical Ring Of Certain Stacks, Jesse Franklin

Graduate College Dissertations and Theses

We compute the canonical ring of some stacks. We first give a detailed account of what this problem means including several proofs of a famous historical example. The main body of work of this thesis expands on our article \cite{Franklin-geometry-Drinfeld-modular-forms} in describing the geometry of Drinfeld modular forms as sections of a specified line bundle on a certain stacky modular curve. As a consequence of that geometry, we provide a program: one can compute the (log) canonical ring of a stacky curve to determine generators and relations for an algebra of Drinfeld modular forms, answering a problem posed by Gekeler …

Characterization Of A Pathological Tau Point Mutation, E342v, Implicated In Frontotemporal Dementia, Liam Clancy Jan 2024

Characterization Of A Pathological Tau Point Mutation, E342v, Implicated In Frontotemporal Dementia, Liam Clancy

Graduate College Dissertations and Theses

Frontotemporal Dementia (FTD) is classified as a Tauopathy, a group of heterogenous neurodegenerative disorders characterized by the abnormal functioning of a microtubule associated protein (MAP), Tau. Microtubules, an integral cytoskeletal component in neurons, are thought to be stabilized by Tau. In disease states such as FTD, a reduction in binding affinity of Tau for the microtubule is believed to lead to intraneural Tau deposition and aggregation, which subsequently causes microtubule instability. Consequently, neuronal health is compromised and an array of brain functions decline creating the symptomology seen in FTD. However, it is now known that Tau has a myriad of …
