Phytoplankton blooms follow predictable annual cycles in the Gulf of Maine, characterized by a large spring bloom and a smaller bloom in the fall. Marine phytoplankton form the foundation of primary production in Gulf of Maine waters, and thus community changes in composition, and abundance could have cascading effects on our coastal ecosystems.

We set out to monitor the community composition, diversity, and abundance of the spring micro-phytoplankton bloom, at a Friends of Casco Bay water quality monitoring site, in South Portland, Maine. The Gulf of Maine is experiencing accelerated warming rates, and this type of monitoring can aid in …

Students who need to pursue remedial coursework before being able to enroll in introductory college requirements face financial and logistical challenges that create barriers to degree progression. In an effort to gain additional information about the scale and context of the problem the University of Maine System and Maine Community College Systems were required to prepare four annual reports with information about the students entering their colleges directly from a Maine high school. These reports provided information on the overall proportion of these students who …

Muskie School Capstones and Dissertations

This team reviewed the literature on community indicators, worked with the Portland team to determine qualities of good indicator systems, and then developed an extensive field interview and observation instrument. This instrument was then used to assess a variety of community attributes in case study sites. Our research expanded on the work of the case studies in community revitalization work. They considered the fiscal issues facing local governments and discuss how that may impact their current and future efforts to revitalize their community. Another element will measure the community’s level of public participation and communication. This will include ranking the …
