Designing For Engagement: A Comparison Of Canvas And A Visual Peer Review Dashboard, Alon Friedman, Md Dilshadur Rahman, Ly Dinh, Paul Rosen
Designing For Engagement: A Comparison Of Canvas And A Visual Peer Review Dashboard, Alon Friedman, Md Dilshadur Rahman, Ly Dinh, Paul Rosen
School of Information Faculty Publications
Peer review is an underutilized yet potentially powerful strategy for fostering evaluative judgment and design literacy in visualization education. Critiquing visual work requires domain-specific competencies that extend beyond generic peer feedback; however, widely adopted platforms such as Canvas provide limited support for the cognitive and visual demands of visualization critique. We introduce VisPeerReview, a visualization-specific learning analytics dashboard (LAD) designed to scaffold peer feedback through an integrated visualization display, rubric-guided prompts, and inline annotation tools. We evaluated VisPeerReview through a three-phase mixed-methods study conducted in an undergraduate data visualization course, comparing it with Canvas’s default peer-review workflow. Drawing on interaction …
Using Behavioral Skills Training And In Situ Training To Teach Game-Related Social Skills, Sumeyye Erdem
Using Behavioral Skills Training And In Situ Training To Teach Game-Related Social Skills, Sumeyye Erdem
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Social skills are important for individuals to be successful, therefore programs that seek to improve social skills of individuals with autism and other disabilities are important (e.g., Agran et al., 2016; Miltenberger et al., 2017). The context of playing games has been used to teach children specific skills and may be a valuable way to promote generalization of social skills (e.g., Amadi et al., 2022; Radley et al., 2014). The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of behavioral skills training (BST) for teaching social skills to children and adolescents using a game format and assess whether these …

Nape Coloration Varies With Sex, Not Age, Among Great Shearwaters Ardenna Gravis, Ewan D. Wakefield, Anna R. Robuck, Kevin D. Powers, Robert A. Ronconi, Peter G. Ryan, David N. Wiley
Marine Ornithology
Most petrels (family Procellariidae) exhibit little or no obvious variation in plumage with age or sex, either because plumage performs no sexual function or does so in a way poorly perceptible to humans. This limits the inferences that can be made from visual observations of petrels at sea. However, it has been suggested that nape coloration of Great Shearwaters Ardenna gravis whitens with age. Here we test this supposition using observations of known-age-class individuals. We necropsied birds bycaught around Gough Island, a major breeding colony in the South Atlantic Ocean, and in Massachusetts Bay, a wintering area off the northeastern …
The Impact Of Visual Brand Identity On Consumer Response In Rebranding: A Case Study Of Burger King, Andressa De Ungaro Dos Santos
The Impact Of Visual Brand Identity On Consumer Response In Rebranding: A Case Study Of Burger King, Andressa De Ungaro Dos Santos
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This case study investigates consumer perceptions of rebranding through the lens of visual brand identity (VBI) and brand associations, focusing on Burger King’s recent rebranding. Using the Aaker Model as the theoretical framework, the study analyzes how brand awareness and associations influence consumer responses to visual identity changes. The research involves two focal areas in which comparative study will be applied by: (1) analyzing rebranding awareness by evaluating media coverage of Burger King’s new branding; (2) examining consumer-brand relationships through social media interactions to understand responses to the rebranding and to measure emotional and associative responses to visual elements. Through …
Exploring Saudi Arabian Teachers' Perceptions Of Smartboard Instruction For Students With Communication Disorders, Mohammed Alqahtani
Exploring Saudi Arabian Teachers' Perceptions Of Smartboard Instruction For Students With Communication Disorders, Mohammed Alqahtani
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Using smartboards with students with communication needs in the classroom is one way to apply technology in educational settings. Research has shown the benefits of using the smartboard with students with disabilities (SWDs) and second-language learners. There is still a need to understand further teachers’ perceptions towards using the smartboard in their classrooms with students with communication needs. Therefore, I conducted an exploratory qualitative study to explore Saudi teachers' perceptions regarding the use of smartboards with students with communication needs in the classroom. I collected data via in-depth interviews, smartboard screen recordings, and audio recordings of teachers’ lessons taught using …
Regulating Deepfakes: An Indian Perspective, Shinu Vig
Regulating Deepfakes: An Indian Perspective, Shinu Vig
Journal of Strategic Security
Deepfakes are a growing concern throughout the world including India. Deepfakes can be used for several purposes, both innocuous or malicious. In India, several problems related to regulation of deepfakes have emerged. This paper makes an examination of current legal challenges posed by deepfakes as well as solutions in India that can be repurposed to address these challenges, including intellectual property laws, criminal laws, and the right to privacy. While these existing laws can be used to address certain aspects of the deep fake problem, there is an increasing recognition that specific legislations and regulations addressing deep fakes and synthetic …

Evaluation Of Information Visualization In Digital Intelligence Product, Dejan Ulcej, Anja Podlesek
Evaluation Of Information Visualization In Digital Intelligence Product, Dejan Ulcej, Anja Podlesek
Journal of Strategic Security
Digital technology has impacted how strategic intelligence products are designed and distributed to political security decisionmakers. Information visualization helps improve the processing of intelligence information. This experimental study investigated whether a prototype digital intelligence report that uses visuals is processed more efficiently and results in a better user experience than a printed intelligence product that contains primarily text. A sample of 72 participants working as decisionmakers in a private company was divided into two equal groups. One group received the digital version of the report, and the other received the printed version. The time it took to read the report, …
Examining Peer Review Network Dynamics In Higher Education Visual Communication Courses Using Ergm, Ly Dinh, Alon Friedman, Kevin Hawley
Examining Peer Review Network Dynamics In Higher Education Visual Communication Courses Using Ergm, Ly Dinh, Alon Friedman, Kevin Hawley
School of Information Faculty Publications
Peer review plays a pivotal role in shaping collaborative learning environments and evaluating student engagement, but there is a lack of research on the relational dynamics that underlie the interactions between students during the peer review process, which is critical for understanding the effectiveness of peer review for students’ learning outcomes. Using explanatory sequential study design, this study’s objectives are to explore the dynamics of peer review as a feedback mechanism in higher education within a social network context, focusing on student interactions during the feedback process. Specifically, we applied dyadic-independent Exponential Random Graph Modeling (ERGM), along with mixed-methods …
The Sounds Of Travel: Video Ethnography In Multisensory Tourism Research, Francesc Fusté-Forné
The Sounds Of Travel: Video Ethnography In Multisensory Tourism Research, Francesc Fusté-Forné
Journal of Sustainability and Resilience
While the analysis of the tourist experience often relies on the visual representations, recent research also increasingly calls for a multisensory understanding of tourism research. Soundscapes are an emerging type of tourism attraction that contributes to the protection and promotion of the sense of place. Departing from the use of video in ethnographic practice, this research notes illustrates the features of soundscapes in nature-based tourism research based on video auto-ethnography. Results show that the sounds of water, animals and gastronomy are evocative of people, places and practices in nature-based tourism experiences.

Leye Cave (Dordogne, France) is a laboratory cave in the Vézère area, a region that contains some of the most famous rock art caves in the world such as Lascaux, Font-de-Gaume and Combarelles, and is listed as Human World Heritage by UNESCO. Leye Cave was selected because it is representative of painted caves, with respect to parameters such as its geological stage, the presence of water and carbon dioxide, the geological state of its walls, and the size of the cave. These wall states are studied to better understand the conditions of conservation of rock art caves without damaging them. …

What On Earth Are We Doing (?): A Field-Wide Exploration Of Design Courses In Tpc, Jessica L. Griffith
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This study explores design related courses within the field of Technical and Professional Communication (TPC) to uncover programmatic trends in undergraduate courses at a field wide level. This applied study uses a mixed methods approach to understand the following questions: what do the range of design courses look like in the field of TPC, how are these courses taught, and what would an effective design course look like? To answer these questions, this study uses a mix of three types of data: (1) institutional data on courses, (2) interviews with faculty and administrators who have taught (or are currently teaching) …
Icons And Metaphors In Visual Communication: The Relevance Of Peirce’S Theory Of Iconicity For The Analysis Of Visual Communication, Martin Thellefsen, Alon Friedman
Icons And Metaphors In Visual Communication: The Relevance Of Peirce’S Theory Of Iconicity For The Analysis Of Visual Communication, Martin Thellefsen, Alon Friedman
School of Information Faculty Publications
In this paper we adopt Charles Sanders Peirce’s concept of iconicity to analyse pictural communication. While visual semiotics has a well-developed structural school, the concepts of visual semiotics stemming from Peirce’s pragmatic sign theory are often overlooked. The specific purpose of this study is to explore the semiotics of visual signs, exemplified by two prominent pictures of former US President Donald Trump. We argue that Peirce’s semiotic framework for iconicity in visual signs (the image, the diagram, and the metaphor) offers a useful framework for discussing how the meaning of visual signs is motivated. On this basis, we propose that …

Big Data Visualization Through The Lens Of Peirce’S Visual Sign Theory, Alon Friedman, Martin Thellefsen
School of Information Faculty Publications
Data from social media platforms, such as Twitter and Facebook, are generated by people who produce, spread, share, or exchange multimedia content. Such content may include text, images, sounds, or videos. To derive insight into the behavior of social media users, researchers often use open-source technologies to visualize data and generate models for data analytics. One of the most popular open-source applications for managing and analyzing social media data is the open-source R programming language. Friedman and Feichtinger (2017) created an R package termed ‘Peirce’s sign theory R package’ to analyze data using Peirce’s principles of discovery. Though Peirce semiotics …
