Perceived Workplace Obstacles And Compensatory Strategies Used By School Psychologists With Disabilities, Gary E. Schaffer
Perceived Workplace Obstacles And Compensatory Strategies Used By School Psychologists With Disabilities, Gary E. Schaffer
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Despite efforts to recruit and retain school psychologists from diverse backgrounds, there has been little focus on school psychologists with disabilities. This oversight is concerning given that school psychologists deliver extensive support to students with disabilities yet simultaneously remain largely absent from diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts. The current study sought to learn about school psychologists with disabilities by providing much-needed demographic information on this population while also focusing on their workplace experiences. Two-hundred-fifty-five participants were asked about their perceptions regarding the systemic challenges they encountered, personal challenges they faced, reasons they disclosed or did not disclose their disability, and …

Understanding Player And Clinician Perspectives On The Impact Of Problematic Gaming Behaviors In The United States, Amanda N. Weston
Understanding Player And Clinician Perspectives On The Impact Of Problematic Gaming Behaviors In The United States, Amanda N. Weston
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Due to the evolution of technology and increased use of video games, the need to understand how gaming affects individuals is imperative to assisting with those who struggle with problematic gaming behaviors. Video gaming has shown to have significant benefits including an increase in cognitive abilities, a way to relieve stress, and mood enhancement. However, problematic gaming behaviors (PGB) (i.e., uncontrollable gaming behaviors that impair functioning) may cause significant short and long-term problems that impact gamers throughout the lifespan if left untreated. There are critical gaps in the literature regarding how gaming impacts player functioning and how clinicians are managing …
The Validation Of The Self Advocacy Skills Inventory Beta, Richard Aaron Chapman
The Validation Of The Self Advocacy Skills Inventory Beta, Richard Aaron Chapman
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This study is meant to explore the psychometric properties of The Self-Advocacy Skills Inventory Beta. The Beta is a measurement of self-advocacy skills for individuals with different disabilities. This dissertation presents the results of a confirmatory factor analysis, as well as an examination of reliability of the Beta as well as its scales. The results of the confirmatory factor analysis indicated that the theorized factor structure of The Self-Advocacy Skills Beta did not fit the data. However, the Self-Advocacy Skills Inventory Beta is measuring self-advocacy skills reliably. Implications for counseling education and future development of The Self-Advocacy Skills Beta are …
Perceptions Of University Faculty Regarding Accreditation In A College Of Education, Sabrina Lewis
Perceptions Of University Faculty Regarding Accreditation In A College Of Education, Sabrina Lewis
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This study was designed to examine tenured faculty perceptions of accreditation. This qualitative study utilized interviews and document analysis to gather the perspective of faculty in a college of education. While there are quantitative and qualitative studies that have addressed accreditation and faculty, the extant literature lacked the perceptions of faculty involved in the accreditation process. This qualitative study offers an in-depth analysis of the perceptions of faculty particularly tenured faculty in a college of education regarding accreditation.
The inclusion criteria for faculty were: experience in higher education for a minimum of 10 years, involved in curriculum development, and tenured. …
Constructing An "Appropriate" Education In Florida Special Education Due Process Final Orders, Michelle Henry
Constructing An "Appropriate" Education In Florida Special Education Due Process Final Orders, Michelle Henry
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This study examined how Florida administrative law judges (ALJs) constructed an appropriate education for students with disabilities in their final orders. This study utilized the Johnstone Method as a heuristic in analyzing the data. It examined the construction of an appropriate education from the implementation of PL 94-142 up to the U.S. Supreme Court decision in Board of Education v. Rowley (1975-1978), after the Rowley decision (1983-1986), and after the reauthorization of the Individual with Disabilities Education Act in 2004 (2004-2007). Each time period was examined individually and then the results were compared. The data sources included six purposively sampled …
Testing The Correlation Between Response Latency, Derivation, And Complexity, Jeffrey Ryan Oliver
Testing The Correlation Between Response Latency, Derivation, And Complexity, Jeffrey Ryan Oliver
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This study investigates the constructs of Derivation and Complexity and how they relate to latency. Derivation and Complexity are theoretical constructs that have been posited as two of the main factors in differences in latency to responding in implicit measures such as the Implicit Relational Assessment Procedure (IRAP) and the Implicit Association Task (IAT). This study trained participants to relate two groups of novel stimuli in a linear fashion and then tested their latency to responding to derived relations (relations based on previously trained relations, but not directly trained themselves). The study then analyzed participant's latency to responding after dividing …

Counselor Discomfort With Sexual Issues And Supervisory Role, Barbara Lofrisco
Counselor Discomfort With Sexual Issues And Supervisory Role, Barbara Lofrisco
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
ABSTRACT
Sexual issues are common among the general population; therefore it is likely that clients suffer with them whether or not they are presenting issues. Because unresolved sexual issues may contribute to harm, counselors have an ethical obligation to ensure these issues are addressed during therapy. Yet, many fail to do so for a variety of reasons. Because clinical supervisors are in a unique position to nurture and mentor novice counselors, their influence is salient to this issue.
Although some research has been done to address this issue, results are inconclusive and somewhat contradictory. This study attempts to fill in …

Task Comparison Between Career Counselors And Vocational Evaluators: What's The Difference?, Jill Flansburg
Task Comparison Between Career Counselors And Vocational Evaluators: What's The Difference?, Jill Flansburg
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This investigation compared the essential tasks of career counselors and vocational evaluators by surveying experts and practitioners in each specialization. Although both services advise persons about their work and training options, career counseling often takes place in university career centers and vocational evaluation is made available in not-for-profit settings. The null hypothesis is that there are no differences in task importance or frequency between these two jobs. Previous literature and current job descriptions from Florida workplaces are used to identify tasks, which are then presented to experts for input regarding frequency and relative importance to job performance.
Tasks endorsed by …

Evaluating Social Work Students’ Attitudes Toward Physical Disability, Rachael A. Haskell
Evaluating Social Work Students’ Attitudes Toward Physical Disability, Rachael A. Haskell
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Given the social work profession's commitment to serving individuals with disabilities and cultural competence, the promotion of favorable attitudes toward persons with disabilities within social work education is critical. This study examined the question: "what are the attitudes of undergraduate social work students at three universities toward individuals with physical disabilities as measured by responses on the Attitudes Toward Disabled Persons Scale Form B (ATDP-Form B; Yuker et al., 1960, 1966) and Interactions with Disabled Persons Scale (Gething, 1991)?" It explored the following hypotheses, that participants who: 1) have had prior positive contact with persons with physical disabilities; 2) have …

Correlates And Predictors Of Cognitive Complexity Among Counseling And Social Work Students In Graduate Training Programs, Christopher Simmons
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
For this study, a web-based survey method was used as a means of collecting data to test a predictive model of education, supervised clinical experience (SCE), age, human services experience (HSE) and cognitive complexity. The theoretical framework for the study was Perry's (1970; 1999) scheme of intellectual development. The sample consisted of 332 counseling and social work students in graduate training programs in four different regions of the United States. The instruments used in the study were a researcher-developed demographic questionnaire and the Learning Environment Preferences (LEP) instrument (Moore, 1987). The results of the hierarchical regression analysis indicated that education …

Allocation And Use Of Section 5310 Funds In Urban And Rural America, Tom Seekins, Alexandra Enders, Alison Pepper, Stephen Sticka
Journal of Public Transportation
Public transportation is a critical part of a community’s infrastructure for people with disabilities. Section 5310 of the Transportation Equity Act is a Federal program of capital assistance to address the mobility needs of the elderly and persons with disabilities. We identified 4,835 Section 5310 recipients in 49 states and the District of Columbia, and randomly selected 750 for a mail survey. The majority were organizations serving senior citizens or individuals with developmental disabilities. Only one was a tribal entity. Overall, Sec. 5310 vehicles made up 32 percent of the respondents’ fleets and 75 percent were lift equipped. More Sec. …

Development Of Assessment Tasks To Measure The Driving Capabilities Of Persons With Disabilities, Ashwin Upadhyay
Development Of Assessment Tasks To Measure The Driving Capabilities Of Persons With Disabilities, Ashwin Upadhyay
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The need to lead an independent and fuller life is as much a right of a person with physical disability as any other human being. Driving capabilities of a person with a disability have been assessed and evaluated using qualitative techniques. However, certain inadequacies that arise using qualitative measures can be avoided if the assessment is based on quantitative techniques.
The above requirement necessitates the need to devise a method and a system which is focused on the right development of the techniques used in assessing and measuring different capabilities (such as range of motion and force input) of the …
The Perceived Impact Of The Individuals With Disabilities Education Act (Idea), 1997 Disciplinary Mandates On The School Board Policies In Three Urban, K-12 Public School Districts, Nancy S. Zambito
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
In 1990 the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) required that states provide a free and appropriate education to all children and youth with disabilities, no matter how severe the disabilities. This obligation was tied to federal funding and outlined in detail parental rights with regard to identifying and educating their child with disabilities. The 1997 reauthorization of IDEA stepped into school discipline, creating a complex process for addressing school misconduct of such students.
This study determines how the 1997 IDEA disciplinary mandates, as they existed until May 2003, were interpreted and implemented in three similar, urban, public school districts …

A Tutorial: Use Of The Who Icidh-2 For Determining Aural Rehabilitation Goals, Nancy Muscato Patterson
A Tutorial: Use Of The Who Icidh-2 For Determining Aural Rehabilitation Goals, Nancy Muscato Patterson
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this project was to implement the newly revised International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICIDH-2) developed by the World Health Organization (WHO), to establish specific aural rehabilitation goals. Five graduate clinicians in speech language pathology and audiology interviewed ten participants with adult onset hearing loss. A modified version of the General Questions for Participation and Activities (i.e., a structured interview technique) from the ICIDH-2 Checklist, was developed. Prior to completing this checklist, the students attended a brief training session to become familiar with the major components of the ICIDH-2, specifically the ICIDH-2 Checklist. Completion of the …
