Tornado Fatalities: An In-Depth Look At Physical And Societal Influences, Heather Joann Key
Tornado Fatalities: An In-Depth Look At Physical And Societal Influences, Heather Joann Key
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study is to model and determine significant predictors of tornado death index values, and to investigate these significant predictors and what makes people vulnerable to tornado fatalities through expert interviews. This study also provides an understanding of the study participant’s perceptions of their county’s vulnerability to tornado fatality and demonstrates a true integration of methods and fields by studying geographic, meteorological, and sociological phenomena by use of quantitative and qualitative methods. The study consists of two parts: 1) A quantitative exploration of variables hypothesized to predict Tornado Death Index (TDI) values, 2) A qualitative investigation to …
An Evaluation Of Florida Gulf Coast University's Residence Life Staff Member's Hurricane Preparedness, Erin Floto
An Evaluation Of Florida Gulf Coast University's Residence Life Staff Member's Hurricane Preparedness, Erin Floto
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU) is located along the coast of the Gulf of Mexico in southern Florida, in an area vulnerable to hurricane strikes. At FGCU, The Office of Housing and Residence Life (OHRL) is responsible for three locations on- and off-campus where students reside in apartment or suite-style housing. Due to the large number of students with varying backgrounds, the OHRL staff members have become essential personnel during severe weather events that may cause safety concerns for the residents living in OHRL housing locations. This study's purpose is to assess the Residence Life staff on their level of …
An Analysis Of Public Perception And Response To Hurricane Sandy, Lindsay L. Rice
An Analysis Of Public Perception And Response To Hurricane Sandy, Lindsay L. Rice
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Hurricane Sandy made landfall in Brigantine, New Jersey on October 29th, 2012. The storm impacted the coastal regions of New Jersey and New York, especially the heavily populated area of New York City. This research, which analyzes secondary data obtained from a telephone survey, investigates the public response of residents before, during and after Hurricane Sandy. The survey consisted of questions regarding what the residents expected concerning the threat of Hurricane Sandy, whether it matched what they experienced, where they got their information and how they made their decision to evacuate or not. The results from the survey were statistically …
Assessing Hurricane Preparedness Among Residential Staff At Louisiana State University: A Case Study On Hurricane Isaac, Ashley Marie Weatherall
Assessing Hurricane Preparedness Among Residential Staff At Louisiana State University: A Case Study On Hurricane Isaac, Ashley Marie Weatherall
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Studying hurricane preparedness among the Resident Assistants (RAs) and Residence Life Coordinators (RLCs) at Louisiana State University (LSU) is imperative to assure that the university housing staff is fully equipped when faced with an oncoming threat. This study seeks to fill a gap in research by investigating the influences of preparedness on student housing employees. A survey was developed and the measures were found to be coherent and internally reliable through the use of factor analysis. Based on theory and previous literature, a linear regression model was developed that quantified the relationship between the independent variable of preparedness and general …
Reciprocity And Development In Disaster-Induced Resettlement In Andean Ecuador, Albert J. Faas
Reciprocity And Development In Disaster-Induced Resettlement In Andean Ecuador, Albert J. Faas
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation addresses gaps in anthropological knowledge about how reciprocity--and a specifically Andean form of reciprocity--works in disaster and resettlement settings. This study looks at the practices of reciprocity in a disaster-affected community (Manzano) and a disaster-induced resettlement (Pusuca) in the Andean highlands of Ecuador. Specifically, it examines two aspects of reciprocal exchange practices in these sites. It first looks at some of the factors that affect the continuity of reciprocal exchange practices, which other studies have found to play a vital role in recovery from disasters and resettlement. It then looks to the roles of unequal power relations in …

"Field surveys were made one week after tornadoes killed 40 persons and injured over 300 in rural regions of Alabama and Georgia USA on 27 March 1994. Surveys were completed for samples of persons killed and persons in the paths of the tornadoes but survived to determine whether there were differences in personal characteristics, behavior, or location between the two groups."

"It is often assumed that immediate emotional responses to a disaster will invariably and uniformly be negative. It is also commonly assumed that the severity of trauma has a 'dose-response' relationship with the severity of distress experienced post-disaster. The present study tested the validity of these assumptions in a sample of residents from communities affected by the South California firestorms."
