Correlates Of Motor Vehicle Screen Use: Moving Screen Use Versus Stopped Screen Use, Claire Kinney Jan 2018

Correlates Of Motor Vehicle Screen Use: Moving Screen Use Versus Stopped Screen Use, Claire Kinney

USF St. Petersburg campus Honors Program Theses (Undergraduate)

Literature on texting and driving generally makes no distinction between moving (while actively driving) and stopped (e.g., while at a red light) texting. The purpose of this study was to analyze differences in regards to moving and stopped motor vehicle screen use (MVSU). Specifically, we examined mean differences in occurrence rates and attitudes towards the two MVSU behaviors and whether known correlates of texting and driving relate differently to moving versus stopped MVSU. Data for this study was obtained from 236 adults recruited through a participant pool of a Southeastern mid-sized college, social media and Amazon’s MTurk. Results suggest that …

Piracy In The Gulf Of Guinea: Responses Under International Maritime Law, Sean C. Cornell Jan 2018

Piracy In The Gulf Of Guinea: Responses Under International Maritime Law, Sean C. Cornell

USF St. Petersburg campus Honors Program Theses (Undergraduate)

In 2011, the UN recognized the problem of general piracy and armed robbery in the Gulf of Guinea. However, the international community and regional authorities have failed to deter this problem thus far. I will compare this situation to the successful dealings with piracy in Somalia, of which existing conditions and adaptations of law allowed for international involvement to restore order and eliminate the feasibility of the crime. Anti-piracy in the Gulf of Guinea has unfortunately been ineffective due to international law conflicting with domestic laws and politics. I will discuss several issues, such as jurisdictional limitations, ineffective criminal justice …

Challenges To The Conceptualization And Measurement Of Resilience In Hiv Research, Tiffany Peless Jan 2018

Challenges To The Conceptualization And Measurement Of Resilience In Hiv Research, Tiffany Peless

USF St. Petersburg campus Honors Program Theses (Undergraduate)

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the conceptualization and measurement of resilience in HIV research. Google Scholar, PsyciNFO, and PubMed were searched using tenns related to resilience and HIV to identify peer-reviewed research articles. Of the 156 articles identified, only 49 were included in the current analyses. Articles were excluded when they did not include a measure of resilience and/or were not relevant to resilience in the context of HIV. Applied thematic analysis was used to analyze the definitions and measurement of resilience in HIV

The Impact Of Wildfire On Soil Erosion Using A Gis-Integrated Rusle Model And The Influence Of Dem Resolution On Model Results, Amada Fernandez Jan 2018

The Impact Of Wildfire On Soil Erosion Using A Gis-Integrated Rusle Model And The Influence Of Dem Resolution On Model Results, Amada Fernandez

USF St. Petersburg campus Honors Program Theses (Undergraduate)

This study analyzes the environmental impact of wildfires on soil erosion in the surrounding watershed of the burn area. Depending on the severity and frequency, wildfrres can have detrimental effects on the soils and hydrology of an ecosystem. Since severe wildfires alter the vegetation cover and the properties of the soil, researchers are often concerned with changes in sedimentation after a wildfire and its implications for watershed hydrology. Adverse changes to sedimentation can result in increases in surface runoff, soil erosion, sediment delivery to nearby streams, and peak flows. Assessing post-fire soil erosion risk is crucial in prioritizing watershed protection …

It's Not Me, It's You: Motor Vehicle Screen Use Intervention, Rachael De Lorenzo Jan 2018

It's Not Me, It's You: Motor Vehicle Screen Use Intervention, Rachael De Lorenzo

USF St. Petersburg campus Honors Program Theses (Undergraduate)

A film-aided intervention was created in an attempt to reduce motor vehicle screen use while driving by focusing drivers' attention on the moral (other-harm) compared to prudential (self-harm) aspects of such transgressions. It was hypothesized that focusing participants on the moral implications of engagement ofMotor Vehicle Screen Use would elicit empathy-related guilt and lead to a reduction in the behavior. Participants in the first wave (70.8% female; 28.8% male) were asked to imagine that they engaged in MVSU and had a head-on collision. They were then randomly assigned into one of three conditions, where either they (!-prudential condition) or the …

Paying For Environmental Services: Comparing Progress In Costa Rica And Florida, Haley A. Burnaman Jan 2018

Paying For Environmental Services: Comparing Progress In Costa Rica And Florida, Haley A. Burnaman

USF St. Petersburg campus Honors Program Theses (Undergraduate)

With the world facing an uncertain environmental future, many governments are deploying alternative conservation strategies to mitigate the worst effects of environmental degradation. Particularly important to human survival is the conservation of land and water resources. Efficient use of land and water can provide people the resources they need for survival while reducing the loss of biodiversity, pollution, human health risks, and carbon emissions that could accelerate climate change. Traditional conservation strategies include buying and preserving land by public or private organizations, establishment of flora and fauna rehabilitation facilities, and the rationing of natural goods. With environmental crises becoming increasingly …

An Exploration Of Emotion And The Creative Process Among Artists, Stephanie Thompson

USF St. Petersburg campus Honors Program Theses (Undergraduate)

The creative process is a fascinating subject when considering human cognition and the generative capacity of the mind, and emotional processes are equally as intriguing. Both creativity and emotional affect are heavily grounded in cognition, but the degree to which they coincide and interact with each other has not been heavily explored. The purpose of this study was to use interviews and qualitative research to analyze the cognitive conceptions of emotion, their representations in art, and the creative process when exploring emotion. Artists produced spontaneous works depicting three basic emotions: happy, sad, and angry; the artists were then interviewed, and …

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) may develop following viewing or subjection to a traumatic event. This disorder is associated with symptoms that include avoidance, intrusion, negative cognitive /mood alteration as well, as changes in arousal and reactivity (American Psychiatric Association, 2000). PTSD has undergone many transitions within the Diagnostic Statistical Manual causing legal implications, confusion on classification of traumatic events, misdiagnoses, and malingering (Zoellner, Bedard-Gilligan, Jun, Marks, and Garcia, 2013). The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) created the Research Domain Criteria (RDoC) to observe mental health conditions using underlying diagnostic structures and incorporating neuroscience in research and treatment of disorders. …
