Social Situations And Alcohol: The Effect Of Social Context On Alcohol Expectancies, Idan Ariel
Social Situations And Alcohol: The Effect Of Social Context On Alcohol Expectancies, Idan Ariel
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Alcohol is one of the most widely used recreational drugs in the United States today, despite being associated with a myriad of negative effects. Alcohol consumption occurs most frequently within social contexts, and seems to be strongly related to many social factors. It is known that an individual's expectations of the effects of alcohol influences his/her drinking behavior, and that social alcohol expectancies are some of the most frequently reported expectancies. In this study, we explored the relationship between alcohol expectancies and social influences by examining whether exposure to a social context would differentially activate alcohol expectancies. 115 young-adult male …

Extracellular Matrix And Fibroblast Communication Following Myocardial Infarction, Yonggang Ma, Ganesh V. Halade, Merry L. Lindsey
Extracellular Matrix And Fibroblast Communication Following Myocardial Infarction, Yonggang Ma, Ganesh V. Halade, Merry L. Lindsey
Internal Medicine Faculty Publications
The extracellular matrix (ECM) provides structural support by serving as a scaffold for cells, and as such the ECM maintains normal tissue homeostasis and mediates the repair response following injury. In response to myocardial infarction (MI), ECM expression is generally upregulated in the left ventricle (LV), which regulates LV remodeling by modulating scar formation. The ECM directly affects scar formation by regulating growth factor release and cell adhesion and indirectly affects scar formation by regulating the inflammatory, angiogenic, and fibroblast responses. This review summarizes the current literature on ECM expression patterns and fibroblast mechanisms in the myocardium, focusing on the …

The Effect Of Proximity To Urban Rail On Housing Prices In Ottawa, Christopher M. Hewitt, W. E. (Ted) Hewitt
The Effect Of Proximity To Urban Rail On Housing Prices In Ottawa, Christopher M. Hewitt, W. E. (Ted) Hewitt
Journal of Public Transportation
Increasingly, urban rail transit (URT) is seen as a desirable solution for transportation challenges faced by both urban planners and residents of suburban areas alike. The availability and ease of access to URT, in turn, may result in distortions in local real estate markets. The conventional wisdom, in fact, suggests that construction of urban rail lines serves as a magnet for new housing development and, in turn, can lead to increases in property values in proximity to URT stations. Existing studies have, in good measure, confirmed this belief, but largely on the basis of global area studies that can often …
Transit Operator Evaluation Of Three Wheelchair Securement Systems In A Large Accessible Transit Vehicle, Linda Van Roosmalen, Douglas Hobson, Patricia Karg, Emily Deleo, Erik Porach
Transit Operator Evaluation Of Three Wheelchair Securement Systems In A Large Accessible Transit Vehicle, Linda Van Roosmalen, Douglas Hobson, Patricia Karg, Emily Deleo, Erik Porach
Journal of Public Transportation
The safety, ease of use, and independent use of three wheelchair securement systems and three different types of wheeled mobility devices (WhMD), including a manual wheelchair, a powered wheelchair, and a three-wheeled scooter, were evaluated by eight vehicle operators of a large accessible public transit vehicle (LATV). The securement systems included a forward-facing four-point tiedown system, a prototype forward-facing autodocking system, and a prototype rear-facing-wheelchair passenger (RF-WP) system. The eight LATV operators transported wheelchair-seated passengers in each wheelchair securement system, after which they completed a questionnaire. Operators responded generally positively to the autodocking and RF-WP systems because they were observed …

Simulated Analysis Of Exclusive Bus Lanes On Expressways: Case Study In Beijing, China, Lin Zhu, Lei Yu, Xu-Mei Chen, Ji-Fu Guo
Journal of Public Transportation
Deploying exclusive bus lanes is considered an important strategy for supporting public transit priority policy. This paper uses a simulation approach to evaluate planned exclusive bus lanes on expressways in Beijing, China. Two scenarios for deploying exclusive bus lanes—a curbside bus lane scenario and a median bus lane scenario—were designed. Then, a micro-simulation network platform using VISSIM was established and calibrated, with all relative errors between the simulated timevarying speeds and the field speeds less than 15 percent. Afterwards, the two bus lane scenarios were simulated, evaluated, and subsequently compared with current traffic conditions without bus lanes. It was found …
N-Glycosylation Dictates Proper Processing Of Organic Anion Transporting Polypeptide 1b1, Juan Yao, Weifang Hong, Jiujiu Huang, Kai Zhan, Hong Huang, Mei Hong
N-Glycosylation Dictates Proper Processing Of Organic Anion Transporting Polypeptide 1b1, Juan Yao, Weifang Hong, Jiujiu Huang, Kai Zhan, Hong Huang, Mei Hong
School of Information Faculty Publications
Organic anion transporting polypeptides (OATPs) have been extensively recognized as key determinants of absorption, distribution, metabolism and excretion (ADME) of various drugs, xenobiotics and toxins. Putative N-glycosylation sites located in the extracellular loops 2 and 5 is considered a common feature of all OATPs and some members have been demonstrated to be glycosylated proteins. However, experimental evidence is still lacking on how such a post-translational modification affect the transport activity of OATPs and which of the putative glycosylation sites are utilized in these transporter proteins. In the present study, we substituted asparagine residues that are possibly involved in N-glycosylation with …

Combating Forced Labour And Human Trafficking In Africa: The Role Of Endogenous And Exogenous Forces, Ambe J. Njoh, Elizabeth N.M. Ayuk-Etang
School of Geosciences Faculty and Staff Publications
It is widely believed that indigenous culture and tradition are at the root of the human trafficking and forced labour problem in Africa. Adherents to this viewpoint also claim that endogenous as opposed to exogenous forces impede efforts to eradicate the problem. This study employed a loglinear regression model to test the tenability of this claim. It hypothesized an inverse association between indigenous culture/tradition and efforts to combat human trafficking. The hypothesis was rejected. It is shown that anti-trafficking initiatives are less successful where indigenous tradition is dominated, or has been usurped, by imported cultural practices.
Probabilistic Approach To Modeling Lava Flow Inundation: A Lava Flow Hazard Assessment For A Nuclear Facility In Armenia, Laura J. Connor, Charles B. Connor, Khachatur Meliksetian, Ivan Savov
Probabilistic Approach To Modeling Lava Flow Inundation: A Lava Flow Hazard Assessment For A Nuclear Facility In Armenia, Laura J. Connor, Charles B. Connor, Khachatur Meliksetian, Ivan Savov
School of Geosciences Faculty and Staff Publications
Probabilistic modeling of lava flow hazard is a two-stage process. The first step is an estimation of the possible locations of future eruptive vents followed by an estimation of probable areas of inundation by lava flows issuing from these vents. We present a methodology using this two-stage approach to estimate lava flow hazard at a nuclear power plant site near Aragats, a Quaternary volcano in Armenia.
