Does Inclusion Of A Disclaimer Versus Warning Reduce The Effects Of Exposure To Thin-Ideal Media Images On Body Dissatisfaction And Intent To Diet?, Rheanna Nichole Ata

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The relationship between exposure to media images of ultra-thin models and body dissatisfaction has been documented in numerous correlational and experimental studies. Given the association between body dissatisfaction and negative outcomes such as eating disorders, prevention and intervention programs have sought to minimize the effects of the media on body dissatisfaction by, for example, providing education on the air-brushing techniques used to enhance the thinness of models depicted in advertisements. More recent efforts in Britain and France include the proposal of legislation that would require advertisements featuring hyper-thin models to include a disclaimer. To determine whether the inclusion of a …

Radiocarbon Dates From The Grotte Du Renne And Saint-Césaire Support A Neandertal Origin For The Châtelperronian, Jean-Jacques Hublin, Sahra Talamo, Michèle Julien Nov 2012

Radiocarbon Dates From The Grotte Du Renne And Saint-Césaire Support A Neandertal Origin For The Châtelperronian, Jean-Jacques Hublin, Sahra Talamo, Michèle Julien

KIP Articles

The transition from the Middle Paleolithic (MP) to Upper Paleolithic (UP) is marked by the replacement of late Neandertals by modern humans in Europe between 50,000 and 40,000 y ago. Châtelperronian (CP) artifact assemblages found in central France and northern Spain date to this time period. So far, it is the only such assemblage type that has yielded Neandertal remains directly associated with UP style artifacts. CP assemblages also include body ornaments, otherwise virtually unknown in the Neandertal world. However, it has been argued that instead of the CP being manufactured by Neandertals, site formation processes and layer admixture resulted …

Statewide Rural-Urban Bus Travel Demand And Network Evaluation: An Application In Tennessee, Hongtai Yang, Christopher R. Cherry Sep 2012

Statewide Rural-Urban Bus Travel Demand And Network Evaluation: An Application In Tennessee, Hongtai Yang, Christopher R. Cherry

Journal of Public Transportation

This paper examines the characteristics of intercity bus riders within Tennessee and proposes methods to identify service gaps and prioritize network expansion, particularly focusing on rural-urban connections. Data were collected through an on-board survey and compared with intercity auto trips. Compared to personal auto users, intercity bus riders are more likely to be of minority races, unemployed, unable to drive, and from low-income households. Five demand levels were determined based on the population distribution with these characteristics. The service areas of existing bus stops were identified and compared with the high demand areas. The result shows that an insufficient number …

Reconfigurable Antenna And Rf Circuits Using Multi-Layer Stretchable Conductors, Riaz Ahmed -. Liyakath Jun 2012

Reconfigurable Antenna And Rf Circuits Using Multi-Layer Stretchable Conductors, Riaz Ahmed -. Liyakath

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The growth of flexible electronics industry has given rise to light-weight, flexible devices which have a wide range of applications such as wearable electronics, flexible sensors, conformal antennas, bio-medical applications, solar cells etc. Though several techniques exist to fabricate flexible devices, the limiting factors have been durability, cost and complexity of the approach. In this research, the focus has been on developing stretchable (flexible) conductors using a multi-layer structure of metal and conductive rubber. The stretchable conductors developed using this approach do not lose electrical connection when subjected to large strains up to 25%. Also, the conductivity of the conductive …

Training And Assessment Of Toothbrushing Skills Among Children With Special Needs, Rachel A. Brown Jun 2012

Training And Assessment Of Toothbrushing Skills Among Children With Special Needs, Rachel A. Brown

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The success of applied behavior analysis (ABA) interventions relies heavily on adherence to measures of social importance. One area identified by caregivers, educators, and researchers as having social importance is the area of daily living skills; particularly in populations of children with special needs. A number of studies employed the use of a task analysis to objectively measure toothbrushing, with various training procedures utilized. Behavioral Skills Training (BST) is an effective procedure used to train a variety of skills. Further, research indicates the addition of an in situ assessment promotes generalization of trained skills. The current study examined the use …

Human Remains From The Pleistocene-Holocene Transition Of Southwest China Suggest A Complex Evolutionary History For East Asians, Darren Curnoe, Ji Xueping, Andy I. R. Herries Mar 2012

Human Remains From The Pleistocene-Holocene Transition Of Southwest China Suggest A Complex Evolutionary History For East Asians, Darren Curnoe, Ji Xueping, Andy I. R. Herries

KIP Articles

Background: Later Pleistocene human evolution in East Asia remains poorly understood owing to a scarcity of well described, reliably classified and accurately dated fossils. Southwest China has been identified from genetic research as a hotspot of human diversity, containing ancient mtDNA and Y-DNA lineages, and has yielded a number of human remains thought to derive from Pleistocene deposits. We have prepared, reconstructed, described and dated a new partial skull from a consolidated sediment block collected in 1979 from the site of Longlin Cave (Guangxi Province). We also undertook new excavations at Maludong (Yunnan Province) to clarify the stratigraphy and dating …

A Review Of The Eocene Diodontids And Labrids From Transylvania, Emanuel Paul Dica Mar 2012

A Review Of The Eocene Diodontids And Labrids From Transylvania, Emanuel Paul Dica

Studia UBB Geologia

This paper reviews two diodontids and labrids species: Chylomicterus hilgendorfi and Lachnolaimus multidens. The paleontological material is represented only from jaws and pharyngeal bones, which had been recently collected from Cluj Limestone (Cluj Napoca and Turbut̡a areas), and Nis̡ului Valley Formation (Turnu Ros̡u) as well as from older collections. The holotypes of these species are reconsidered and the paleoecological significances are also discussed.

If Only Math Majors Could Write..., Bernard L. Madison Jan 2012

If Only Math Majors Could Write..., Bernard L. Madison

Numeracy

This text of the opening plenary address to the 2011 Summit of the Appalachian College Association and the meeting of the National Numeracy Network makes an argument that quantitative reasoning and writing should be taught together. The argument is set up by noting that humanists have historically banished quantitative issues from their study of the liberal arts and that science, engineering, and mathematics education suffers from lack of approaches to learning that promote complex, deeper understanding, most notably integrative and reflective learning. Therefore, everyone would profit from combining writing and quantitative reasoning. Five more specific reasons are discussed, drawing evidence …

Homeostatic Imbalance In Epithelial Ducts And Its Role In Carcinogenesis, Katarzyna A. Rejniak Jan 2012

Homeostatic Imbalance In Epithelial Ducts And Its Role In Carcinogenesis, Katarzyna A. Rejniak

Oncologic Sciences Faculty Publications

An epithelial duct is a well-defined multicellular structure composed of tightly packed cells separating and protecting body compartments that are used for enzyme secretion and its transport across the internal. The structural and functional integrity (homeostasis) of such ducts is vital in carrying many life functions (breathing, lactation, production of hormones). However, the processes involved in maintaining the homeostatic balance are not yet fully understood. On the other hand, the loss of epithelial tissue architecture, such as filled lumens or ductal disorganization, are among the first symptoms of the emerging epithelial tumors (carcinomas). Using the previously developed biomechanical model of …

Toothbrush Contamination: A Review Of The Literature, Michelle R. Frazelle, Cindy L. Munro Jan 2012

Toothbrush Contamination: A Review Of The Literature, Michelle R. Frazelle, Cindy L. Munro

Nursing Faculty Publications

Toothbrushes are commonly used in hospital settings and may harbor potentially harmful microorganisms. A peer-reviewed literature review was conducted to evaluate the cumulative state of knowledge related to toothbrush contamination and its possible role in disease transmission. A systematic review was conducted on adult human subjects through three distinct searches. The review resulted in seven experimental and three descriptive studies which identified multiple concepts related to toothbrush contamination to include contamination, methods for decontamination, storage, design, and environmental factors. The selected studies found that toothbrushes of healthy and oral diseased adults become contaminated with pathogenic bacteria from the dental plaque, …

Understanding Involuntary Job Loss Among Former Newspaper Staff Photographers, Ryan K. Morris Jan 2012

Understanding Involuntary Job Loss Among Former Newspaper Staff Photographers, Ryan K. Morris

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This study examines former newspaper photographers' experience with being laid-off from their staff positions. The purpose was to identify emerging themes within the context of involuntary job loss, job satisfaction, and occupational identity via interviews with 8 photojournalists who experienced the phenomenon of being laid-off. The newspaper industry has long been considered both the starting point for young and aspiring photojournalism careers and the most consistent and stable venue for an income. Yet recent changes in the media landscape, particularly economic stress on traditional business models and rapid adoption of digital technology sway the occupational future of photojournalism within newsrooms. …

In Defense Of A Fluctuating-Interface, Particle-Accretion Origin Of Folia, Donald G. Davis Jan 2012

In Defense Of A Fluctuating-Interface, Particle-Accretion Origin Of Folia, Donald G. Davis

International Journal of Speleology

Two recent papers have proposed radically different modes of origin for cave folia. Audra et al. (2009) propose subaqueous origin of carbonate folia via hypogenic CO2 bubble trapping, with concurrent condensation-corrosion and evaporative precipitation within individual folia gas pockets. Queen (2009) proposes that at least some folia are analogous to suboceanic tufa-tower "flanges" and may result from subaqueous freshwater mixing into a briny environment. The purpose of this paper is to show that neither of these mechanisms can be the fundamental process responsible for folia morphology in cave deposits, and that accretion from adherent particles at fluctuating interfaces is …
