Feeding Mechanism Of The Atlantic Guitarfish Rhinobatos Lentiginosus: Modulation Of Kinematic And Motor Activity, C. D. Wilga, Philip J. Motta
Feeding Mechanism Of The Atlantic Guitarfish Rhinobatos Lentiginosus: Modulation Of Kinematic And Motor Activity, C. D. Wilga, Philip J. Motta
Philip J. Motta
The kinematics and muscle activity pattern of the head and jaws during feeding in the Atlantic guitarfish Rhinobatos lentiginosus are described and quantified using high-speed video and electromyography to test hypotheses regarding the conservation and modulation of the feeding mechanism. Prey is captured by the guitarfish using suction. Suction capture, bite manipulation and suction transport behaviors in the guitarfish are similar to one another in the relative sequence of kinematic and motor activity, but can be distinguished from one another by variation in absolute muscle activation time, in the presence or absence of muscle activity and in the duration of …

Institutional Arrangements For Watershed Management: A Case Study Of Arenal, Costa Rica, December 1998, Bruce Aylward, Alvaro Fernández González
Economy and Resource Management [Monteverde Institute]
The CREED Costa Rica project conducted an exhaustive quantitative inquiry into the economic factors that determine land use in the Río Chiquito watershed of Lake Arenal, Costa Rica, and found that livestock production is likely to produce positive hydrological externalities. This paper integrates these results into an application of the Institutional Analysis and Development Framework that is informed by a participatory process conducted with watershed stakeholders. The paper identifies physical measures, institutional arrangements and incentive mechanisms to stimulate improved watershed management in Río Chiquito by expanding the analysis beyond just the internalisation of hydrological externalities, to consideration of the larger …

An Analysis Of Private And Social Discount Rates In Costa Rica, December 1998, Bruce Aylward, Ina T. Porras
An Analysis Of Private And Social Discount Rates In Costa Rica, December 1998, Bruce Aylward, Ina T. Porras
Economy and Resource Management [Monteverde Institute]
In the economic analysis of long-term projects or changes in policy and land use with long term impacts, the cost and benefit flows typically occur in different periods. The process of discounting these flows enables them to be added together and compared with the net present value of alternative courses of action. Discounting is therefore central to intertemporal economic analysis. In the case of the analysis of environmental issues, discounting assumes particular importance, given that economic benefits produced by ecosystems (or damages incurred by their degradation) either (1) occur only in the future (2) increase into the future or (3) …

Genetic Variation In Chrysopsis Floridana Small, The Endangered Florida Golden Aster, As Revealed By Random Amplification For Polymorphism Detection (Rapd), Laurie Lysle Walker Markham
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Chrysopsis fioridana Small (Asteraceae) is a federally endangered plant endemic to the Tampa Bay area of west central Florida. It is confined to the sand pine scrub community, growing in open, sunny, and sandy areas or in disturbed areas at the edges of scrub. As a means ofassessing the genetic variability ofthis species, eight populations in Hillsborough County were compared with a seed stock collection housed at Bok Tower Gardens in Lake Wales using random amplification for polymorphism detection (RAPD). The objectives of this study were to (I) describe the overall genetic variation among and within populations and subpopulations of …

An Empirical Algorithm For Light Absorption By Ocean Water Based On Color, Zhongping Lee, Kendall L. Carder, R. G. Steward, T. G. Peacock, C. O. Davis, J. S. Patch
Marine Science Faculty Publications
Empirical algorithms for the total absorption coefficient and absorption coefficient by pigments for surface waters at 440 nm were developed by applying a quadratic formula that combines two spectral ratios of remote-sensing reflectance. For total absorption coefficients ranging from 0.02 to 2.0 m(-1), a goodness of fit was achieved between the measured and modeled data with a root-mean-square difference between the measured and modeled values for log10 scale (RMSDlog10) of 0.062 (15.3% for linear scale, number of samples N = 63), while RMSDlog10 is 0.111 (29.1% for linear scale, N = 126) for pigment absorption (ranging from 0.01 to 1.0 …

Detection Of The Fast Kelvin Wave Teleconnection Due To El Niño‐Southern Oscillation, Steven D. Meyers, Arne Melsom, Gary T. Mitchum, James J. O'Brien
Marine Science Faculty Publications
Previous analyses of the ocean state along the western American coast have often indicated unexpectedly slow and limited propagation of coastally trapped Kelvin waves associated with the El Niño‐Southern Oscillation. In contrast, theoretical and numerical ocean models demonstrate that these Kelvin waves are a rapid and long‐range teleconnection between the low‐ and high‐latitude Pacific Ocean, strongly impacting both the surface coastal currents and nutrient upwelling. Sea level variations along the western coast of North America are reexamined under the assumption that tropically forced Kelvin waves are produced in bursts of several months duration. A cross‐correlation analysis, restricted to mid‐1982 to …

Critical Evaluation For Education Reform, Gisele A. Waters
Education Policy Analysis Archives (EPAA)
The school reform movement has done little to provide an accurate analysis of the production of inequality or the reproduction of social injustice in the public schools or the larger social order. The ideology that influences this movement has often prevented the realization of any notion of an egalitarian ideal, the elimination of inequality, or the improvement of those who are least well-off. I ask educators and evaluators of education reform efforts to reconsider critically their roles in social science research, to reclaim the battleground of public school reform by focusing on the democratic purpose of public schooling, and the …

Climate Variability Of The Coupled Tropical-Extratropical Ocean-Atmosphere System, Chunzai Wang, Robert H. Weisberg
Climate Variability Of The Coupled Tropical-Extratropical Ocean-Atmosphere System, Chunzai Wang, Robert H. Weisberg
Marine Science Faculty Publications
Observations show that tropical and extratropical Pacific SST anomalies vary out-of-phase, and that the atmospheric meridional Hadley and zonal Walker Circulations are related to these variations. A tropical-extratropical model is constructed to show oscillations consistent with observations. The positive feedback introduced by the Walker Circulation causes tropical warming so that the air rises and flows toward the subtropics where it sinks. When the sinking air approaches the sea surface, it flows both equatorward and poleward enhancing tropical easterly and extratropical westerly winds, respectively. Enhanced extratropical westerlies increases wind speed and hence evaporation, resulting in extratropical cooling. The Walker and Hadley …
