Genetic History Of An Archaic Hominin Group From Denisova Cave In Siberia, David Reich, Richard E. Green, Martin Kircher
Genetic History Of An Archaic Hominin Group From Denisova Cave In Siberia, David Reich, Richard E. Green, Martin Kircher
KIP Articles
Using DNA extracted from a finger bone found in Denisova Cave in southern Siberia, we have sequenced the genome of an archaic hominin to about 1.9-fold coverage. This individual is from a group that shares a common origin with Neanderthals. This population was not involved in the putative gene flow from Neanderthals into Eurasians; however, the data suggest that it contributed 4–6% of its genetic material to the genomes of present-day Melanesians. We designate this hominin population ‘Denisovans’ and suggest that it may have been widespread in Asia during the Late Pleistocene epoch. A tooth found in Denisova Cave carries …

1,2,3,4-Tetrahydroacridones As Potential Inhibitors Of Atovaquone-Resistant And Atovaquone- Susceptible P. Falciparum Isolates Tm90-C2b And W2, Lisa Luong
Outstanding Honors Theses
Malaria is one of the most significant parasitic diseases affecting mankind today, exceeding 200 million annual cases worldwide1. This disease has been a serious issue due to developed resistance to commonly available antimalarial drugs including atovaquone and artemisinin2, the most relevant modern treatment (figure 1.1). This project focuses on the preparation of 1,2,3,4- tetrahydroacridones (figure 1.2) that can be tested for their activity against P. falciparum isolates TM90-C2B (an atovaquone-resistant parasitic strain) and W2 (an atovaquone-susceptible parasite). In the past, studies have shown that endochins (4(1H)-quinolones) 3 and acridines (figure 1.1) have been found to exhibit antimalarial activity4. The research …

Deglacial Abrupt Climate Change In The Atlantic Warm Pool: A Gulf Of Mexico Perspective, Carlie Williams, Benjamin P. Flower, David W. Hastings, Thomas P. Guilderson, Kelly A. Quinn, Ethan A. Goddard
Marine Science Faculty Publications
During the last deglaciation, Greenland ice core and North Atlantic sediment records exhibit multiple abrupt climate events including the Younger Dryas cold episode (12.9-11.7 ka). However, evidence for the presence of the Younger Dryas in the Gulf of Mexico (GOM) and the relationship between GOM sea surface temperature (SST) and high-latitude climate change is less clear. We present new Mg/Ca-SST records from two varieties of the planktonic foraminifer Globigerinoides ruber (white and pink) to assess northern GOM SST history from approximately 18.4-10.8 ka. Thirty-five accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) C-14 dates from Orca Basin core MD02-2550 provide excellent age control and …

The Pragmatic Influences On Thou And Ye In Some Middle English Romances, Aislinn Meyer
The Pragmatic Influences On Thou And Ye In Some Middle English Romances, Aislinn Meyer
Outstanding Honors Theses
The standard explanation of the semantics of power and solidarity for second person Middle English pronoun choice, advanced by Roger Brown and Albert Gilman and accepted by many Middle English scholars since, has proven insufficient to explain many choices between thou and ye that fictional characters make. This paper applies the discourse theories of pragmatics and politeness, developed by Penelope Brown and Stephen C. Levinson, to the relatively untouched data set of non-Chaucerian romances in order to account for some of those anomalies. By examining the pronouns of address in Floris and Blancheflour, Havelok the Dane, Ywain and Gawain, …

Coupling Of Surge And Waves For An Ivan-Like Hurricane Impacting The Tampa Bay, Florida Region, Yong Huang, Robert H. Weisberg, Lianyuan Zheng
Coupling Of Surge And Waves For An Ivan-Like Hurricane Impacting The Tampa Bay, Florida Region, Yong Huang, Robert H. Weisberg, Lianyuan Zheng
Marine Science Faculty Publications
The interactions between waves and storm surge are investigated using an unstructured grid, coupled wave‐surge model forced by a hypothetical Ivan‐like hurricane impacting the Tampa Bay, Florida region. The waves derived from the unstructured version of the third‐generation wave model simulating waves nearshore. The surge derives from the unstructured Finite‐Volume Coastal Ocean Model, to which wave‐induced forces (based on radiation stress theory) are added to the traditional forces by winds and atmospheric pressure. Dependent upon complex bathymetry and geometry, the wave‐induced forces result in an additional 0.3∼0.5 m of surge relative to an uncoupled, surge‐only simulation, and the increase in …

High Fat Diet-Induced Animal Model Of Age-Associated Obesity And Osteoporosis, Ganesh V. Halade, Md M. Rahman, Paul J. Williams, Gabriel Fernandes
High Fat Diet-Induced Animal Model Of Age-Associated Obesity And Osteoporosis, Ganesh V. Halade, Md M. Rahman, Paul J. Williams, Gabriel Fernandes
Internal Medicine Faculty Publications
Osteoporosis and obesity remain a major public health concern through its associated fragility and fractures. Several animal models for the study of osteoporotic bone loss, such as ovariectomy (OVX) and denervation, require unique surgical skills and expensive set up. The challenging aspect of these age-associated diseases is that no single animal model exactly mimics the progression of these human-specific chronic conditions. Accordingly, to develop a simple and novel model of post menopausal bone loss with obesity, we fed either a high fat diet containing 10% corn oil (CO) or standard rodent lab chow (LC) to 12-month-old female C57Bl/6J mice for …
Regulation Of Claudin-1 Expression Via Activation Of Ron Tyrosine Kinase And Transforming Growth Factor-Beta Signaling Pathways In Ovarian Carcinoma, Saya Karim
Outstanding Honors Theses
Epithelial ovarian carcinoma is the most common cause of death among gynecologic malignancies in the United States. In the U.S., more than 21,000 women will be diagnosed with ovarian cancer and about 15,000 women will die of the disease this year alone. Although migration and invasion play key roles in tumor progression, the specific molecular events leading to dissemination of ovarian tumor cells have not been well delineated. Tight junctions are an integral component of epithelial junction complexes, which play a vital role in maintaining epithelial integrity and cell polarity. Disruption of tight junctions is a hallmark of epithelial cancer …

Isolation And Identification Of Eastern Equine Encephalitis Virus In Mosquito Pools, Timothy Bender
Isolation And Identification Of Eastern Equine Encephalitis Virus In Mosquito Pools, Timothy Bender
Outstanding Honors Theses
The Eastern Equine Encephalitis Virus (EEEV) is transmitted to humans by mosquitoes of many genera. This virus has a high mortality rate and frequent life-altering complications for survivors of infection. The current practice for isolating and identifying the EEEV has been restricted to testing pools of 50 or less mosquitoes. A procedure for simulating one infected mosquito in a pool of 100 was established and tested. Data collected shows the threshold pool size can be increased to 100 without loss of specificity or accuracy. This increased will be met with many benefits including economic savings and increased time efficiency.
An Approach To Mitigating Excess Medical Waste, Ryan M. Kania, Jordan B. Markel
An Approach To Mitigating Excess Medical Waste, Ryan M. Kania, Jordan B. Markel
Outstanding Honors Theses
We present a literature-based review on global health disparities and a health economics perspective on utilizing low cost interventions to improve these disparities. We then introduce the need for a non-for profit organization that specializes in excess medical waste as a low cost intervention to empower targeted communities and improve global health disparities while decreasing the burden of medical waste. Medical waste is defined and a literature-based review is presented on the current body of knowledge concerning medical waste such as how much exists and why it exists. We then present a research study survey that will be executed to …

A Half-Century Of Changes In China's Lakes: Global Warming Or Human Influence?, Ronghua Ma, Hongtao Duan, Chuanmin Hu, Xuezhi Feng, Ainong Li, Weimin Ju, Jiahu Jiang, Guishan Yang
Marine Science Faculty Publications
Lake size is sensitive to both climate change and human activities, and therefore serves as an excellent indicator to assess environmental changes. Using a large volume of various datasets, we provide a first complete picture of changes in China's lakes between 1960s–1980s and 2005–2006. Dramatic changes are found in both lake number and lake size; of these, 243 lakes vanished mainly in the northern provinces (and autonomous regions) and also in some southern provinces while 60 new lakes appeared mainly on the Tibetan Plateau and neighboring provinces. Limited evidence suggested that these geographically unbalanced changes might be associated primarily with …

Ocean Mass From Grace And Glacial Isostatic Adjustment, D. Chambers, John Wahr, Mark E. Tamisea, R Steven Nerem
Ocean Mass From Grace And Glacial Isostatic Adjustment, D. Chambers, John Wahr, Mark E. Tamisea, R Steven Nerem
Marine Science Faculty Publications
We examine geoid rates and ocean mass corrections from two published global glacial isostatic adjustment (GIA) models, both of which have been used in previous studies to estimate ocean mass trends from Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) satellite gravity data. These two models are different implementations of the same ice loading history and use similar mantle viscosity profiles. The model results are compared with each other and with geoid rates determined from GRACE during August 2002 to November 2009. When averaged over the global ocean, the two models have rates that differ by nearly 1 mm yr−1 of …

Chronology Of The Grotte Du Renne (France) And Implications For The Context Of Ornaments And Human Remains Within The Châtelperronian, Thomas Higham, Roger Jacobi, Michèle Julien
KIP Articles
There is extensive debate concerning the cognitive and behavioral adaptation of Neanderthals, especially in the period when the earliest anatomically modern humans dispersed into Western Europe, around 35,000–40,000 B.P. The site of the Grotte du Renne (at Arcy-sur-Cure) is of great importance because it provides the most persuasive evidence for behavioral complexity among Neanderthals. A range of ornaments and tools usually associated with modern human industries, such as the Aurignacian, were excavated from three of the Châtelperronian levels at the site, along with Neanderthal fossil remains (mainly teeth). This extremely rare occurrence has been taken to suggest that Neanderthals were …
