Diversity Of Cultivable Bacteria Involved In The Formation Of Macroscopic Microbial Colonies (Cave Silver) On The Walls Of A Cave In Slovenia, Blagajana Herzog Velikonja, Rok Tkavc, Lejla Pašić

International Journal of Speleology

Karstic caves often support white, yellow, grey or pink microbial colonies that are termed ‘cave silver’ by speleologists. Using various sample pre-treatments and culture media, a wide variety of bacteria associated with these colonies were recovered from a cave in Slovenia, Pajsarjeva jama. Decreasing the inoculum size resulted in significant increases in viable counts, while pre-treatments had the opposite effect with the exception of microwave irradiation. While all growth media yielded viable counts, the maximal counts were observed on a low-nutrient TWA medium.

Based on the 16S rRNA gene sequence of OTU representatives, the majority of the 80 isolates examined …

Ridership And Revenue Implications Of Free Fares For Seniors In Northeastern Illinois, Paul Metaxatos Dec 2013

Ridership And Revenue Implications Of Free Fares For Seniors In Northeastern Illinois, Paul Metaxatos

Journal of Public Transportation

This paper reports on the ridership and revenue impacts for transit providers of a short-lived Seniors Free Ride Program in the Chicago metropolitan area. The discussion presents survey-free and survey-based approaches specifically developed to capture such effects during the program implementation. The analysis shows that instituting a free fare policy for seniors expectedly increased the demand for and associated costs of providing the service. In particular, the program had attracted approximately 75 percent additional senior rides at an associated cost of between $26.1 and $78.6 million. The Illinois legislature modified the program in 2011 to run as a means-tested program …

Shared-Use Bus Priority Lanes On City Streets: Approaches To Access And Enforcement, Asha Weinstein Agrawal, Todd Goldman, Nancy Hannaford Dec 2013

Shared-Use Bus Priority Lanes On City Streets: Approaches To Access And Enforcement, Asha Weinstein Agrawal, Todd Goldman, Nancy Hannaford

Journal of Public Transportation

This paper examines policies and strategies governing the operations of bus lanes in major congested urban centers where the bus lanes do not completely exclude other uses. The two key questions addressed are: 1. What is the scope of the priority use granted to buses? When is bus priority in effect, and what other users may share the lanes during these times? 2. How are the lanes enforced? To answer these questions, the study developed detailed cases on management strategies in seven cities that currently have shared-use bus priority lanes: Los Angeles, London, New York City, Paris, San Francisco, Seoul, …

Eliminating Bus Stops: Evaluating Changes In Operations, Emissions And Coverage, Ranjay M. Shrestha, Edmund J. Zolnik

Journal of Public Transportation

Bus systems in the United States are unattractive to many potential riders because of their lack of efficiency, especially with regard to travel time. One of the reasons services are not more efficient has to do with the spacing of bus stops. After using a nearest facility algorithm with an 800 m walking distance threshold to identify eligible bus stops in the current bus system in the city of Fairfax, Virginia, the impacts of their elimination on operations, emissions, and coverage are estimated. Results indicate that eliminating some bus stops (about 40% of current stops) could improve travel times and …

Bosom Friends And The Sapphic Breasts Of Belinda, Ula E. Klein Nov 2013

Bosom Friends And The Sapphic Breasts Of Belinda, Ula E. Klein

ABO: Interactive Journal for Women in the Arts, 1640-1830

This article examines Maria Edgeworth’s 1801 novel Belinda in order to argue that the breast at the center of Lady Delacour’s narrative signifies not maternal failure but Sapphic feelings and connections. While previous studies of the novel have discussed the wounded breast of Lady Delacour as a punishment for her transgressions or as an emblem of her patriarchal oppression, this article claims that the wounded breast is both a sign of and a means to female same-sex desire and relationships. This article contrasts the wounded, festering breast with the tableau that ends the novel. The tableau, a constructed vision of …

Narrative Strategies Of Post-Genocide Argentine Filmmaking: The Decade Of The 1980s, Lior Zylberman Nov 2013

Narrative Strategies Of Post-Genocide Argentine Filmmaking: The Decade Of The 1980s, Lior Zylberman

Genocide Studies and Prevention: An International Journal

This work is part of a broader study. This article analyzes Argentine films about the genocide perpetrated by the country’s last military dictatorship (1976-1983). The focus is on the films produced during the 1980s, specifically those made between 1984 and 1989. Generally these films have been analyzed from an aesthetic perspective, or else from a chronological standpoint that connects their historical context to the design aspects of individual films, their mise-en-scène. Central to this latter approach has been what is termed a prevailing “theory of the two demons”. This approach is generally valid, however this article posits that in their …

Capital Cost Comparisons Between Low Impact Development (Lid) And Conventional Stormwater Management Systems In Florida, Daniel C. Penniman, Mark Hostetler, Tatiana Borisova, Glenn Acomb Oct 2013

Capital Cost Comparisons Between Low Impact Development (Lid) And Conventional Stormwater Management Systems In Florida, Daniel C. Penniman, Mark Hostetler, Tatiana Borisova, Glenn Acomb

Suburban Sustainability

Low impact development (LID), an ecologically sensitive development strategy and stormwater management (SWM) method, is beginning to be implemented in more suburban and metropolitan projects. However, construction firms that work in Florida have been relatively slow to adopt LID. One significant reason being that many professionals in the development community believe LID practices raise the cost of construction compared to conventional, “pipe and pond” methods. Our objective for this study was to determine how specific capital costs differed between LID and conventional SWM methods. We surveyed a group of LID-experienced design professionals to collect cost data from projects that were …

Oniroscopios: Metadispositivos Cinematográficos Y Posiciones Espectadoriales En No Te Mueras Sin Decirme Adónde Vas Y La Sonámbula, Juan Ignacio Munoz

Alambique.

Buenos Aires Dreaming: Chronopolitics, Memory And Dystopia In La Sonámbula, Mariano Paz

Alambique. Revista académica de ciencia ficción y fantasía / Jornal acadêmico de ficção científica e fantasía

The Argentine film La Sonámbula (dir. Fernando Spiner, 1998) is one of the most renowned examples of local science fiction cinema. The film portrays a post-apocalyptic, totalitarian Argentina in the year 2010 (the near future at the time of the film’s release). Since this dystopian scenario never materialized, it might be assumed the concerns and anxieties about Argentine politics that the film conveys might have been exaggerated or unfounded. Drawing on the concept of chronopolitcs, as defined by Paul Virilio, and on the theoretical framework proposed by Paul Ricoeur related to the study of memory and forgetting, this paper discusses …

¿Quién Le Teme A C. P. Snow En La Crítica De Ciencia Ficción Latinoamericana? El Enigma Del Género En El Laberinto De Una Conspiración Hermética., Roberto M. Lepori

Alambique.

Mycological Study For A Management Plan Of A Neotropical Show Cave (Brazil), Erika Linzi Silva Taylor, Maria Aparecida De Resende Stoianoff, Rodrigo Lopes Ferreira

International Journal of Speleology

Caves are stable environments with characteristics favoring the development of microorganisms. The allocthonous input of organic matter and microbes into the warm Neotropical caves may favor the development of filamentous fungi, including pathogenic species. Histoplasma capsulatum is a pathogenic species commonly found in caves and associated with bat and bird guano. Many Brazilian caves have been historically visited due to scenic and religious tourism. The objective of this study was to perform a microbiology study for a management plan of a show cave in Brazil, focusing on the presence and distribution of pathogenic and opportunistic fungi in the cave. Statistics …

Bioerosive Structures In Orbitolinid Foraminifera: Examples From The Lower Cretaceous Of Central Iran, Felix Schlagintweit, Ioan I. Bucur, Koorosh Rashidi, Behnam Saberzadeh

Studia UBB Geologia

Lower Cretaceous orbitolinid assemblages from Central Iran yield various bioerosional structures. The omnipresent traces of different boring taxa and groups (e.g., sponges, calcimicrobes, incertae sedis) represent a characteristic feature of the investigated thin-section material. The assemblage can be attributed to the Entobia ichnofacies dominated by borings assigned to the activity of sponges. The boring galleries are often concentrated in a plane parallel to the test surface, along the boundary of the marginal and the central zone of the orbitolinid tests. The borings are observed in foraminiferan-dasycladalean wackestones to poorly washed-out packstones, which can be referred to a subtidal …

Efficacy Of Modified Cognitive Interviewing, Compared To Human Judgments In Detecting Deception Related To Bio-Threat Activities, Charles A. Morgan Dr., Yaron G. Rabinowitz Dr., Deborah Hilts, Craig E. Weller, Vladimir Coric Dr. Oct 2013

Efficacy Of Modified Cognitive Interviewing, Compared To Human Judgments In Detecting Deception Related To Bio-Threat Activities, Charles A. Morgan Dr., Yaron G. Rabinowitz Dr., Deborah Hilts, Craig E. Weller, Vladimir Coric Dr.

Journal of Strategic Security

National security professionals have few scientifically valid methods for detecting deception in people who deny being involved in illicit activities relevant to national security. Numerous detecting deception studies have demonstrated that the Modified Cognitive Interviewing (MCI) method is one such method - yielding detecting deception rates (i.e. 80-85%) that are significantly above those achieved by chance (i.e. 50%) or by human judgments (i.e. 54-56%). To date, however, no MCI studies have involved dilemmas of ethological interest to national security professionals. This project begins to address this gap in the scientific literature. In it, we compared the efficacy of MCI to …

Evaluating And Improving Online Intelligence Courses, Alexandra Luce Oct 2013

Evaluating And Improving Online Intelligence Courses, Alexandra Luce

Journal of Strategic Security

Civilian, military and government institutions offer a wide range of courses on intelligence and are increasingly doing so online. While evaluation and improvement are critical to ensuring quality training and education, there is little research about how to evaluate and improve online intelligence courses. Based on the author’s experience developing and teaching such courses, this article offers four suggestions to those involved in online intelligence training and education: (1) conduct a key assumptions check; (2) ensure the course presentation embodies the principles of intelligence communication; (3) encourage creative freedom; and (4) build in mechanisms for feedback throughout the course.

Strengthening Intelligence Education With Information-Processing And Knowledge-Organization Competencies, Yejun Wu Oct 2013

Strengthening Intelligence Education With Information-Processing And Knowledge-Organization Competencies, Yejun Wu

Journal of Strategic Security

This paper studies the weaknesses of intelligence-education curriculum in the United States from a Library and Information Science perspective. Intelligence information processing is a separate step in the traditional intelligence cycle; however, information-processing competencies are often included in the intelligence collection and analysis competencies in the Intelligence Community. A study of the websites of the intelligence-education programs in the major 27 intelligence-education institutions in the United States reveals that information processing is often implicitly included in an intelligence analysis or collection course; and only three universities offer such courses that include information-processing components. Only one university has been found to …

Occam’S Follies: Real And Imagined Biases Facing Intelligence Studies, Matthew Crosston Oct 2013

Occam’S Follies: Real And Imagined Biases Facing Intelligence Studies, Matthew Crosston

Journal of Strategic Security

More than a decade removed from 9/11 many across the academic and intelligence communities profess the importance for greater collaboration and cooperation. This mutual diffusion of knowledge, methods, and research would ideally produce both a stronger Intelligence Studies discipline and new talented cadres for both communities. The emphasis is not just logical because of the continued relevance of traditional threats, but is also common sense when considering new challenges represented by emerging threat issues and an oncoming demographic crisis: the fast-approaching retirement of the baby boom generation means a new generation of scholars and practitioners is rising now. Developing that …

Matching Intelligence Teaching Methods With Different Learners' Needs, David L. Blenkhorn, Craig S. Fleisher

Journal of Strategic Security

Current trends suggest that academia may be well “behind the curve” in delivering effective competitive and market intelligence programs and course offerings to students. There are many reasons why this state of affairs has occurred, and prominent among them is nature of challenges experienced by instructors in disseminating and teaching students the prominent competencies they need to acquire in order to be successful in the changing workplace. Applying cluster analysis to our teaching experiences and the scholarship, we develop a normative conceptual model that contrasts traditional and evolving pedagogical methods. Furthermore, we make the case that new learning tools and …

Thinking In 140 Characters: The Internet, Neuroplasticity, And Intelligence Analysis, Michael Landon-Murray, Ian Anderson Oct 2013

Thinking In 140 Characters: The Internet, Neuroplasticity, And Intelligence Analysis, Michael Landon-Murray, Ian Anderson

Journal of Strategic Security

This article argues the neuroplastic effects of contemporary internet use will have critical implications for the U.S. Intelligence Community. Studies have shown the internet and related technologies are fundamentally changing the way people engage information, which in turn has compromised cognitive functioning in a number of important ways. In the analytic segments of intelligence organizations, this phenomenon speaks directly to a—if not the—core occupational function: focused, disciplined thinking. This issue can be expected to be more pronounced among younger and newer analytic cohorts, though it certainly is not an issue reserved for these cohorts alone. While the internet has brought …

Amateur Hour? Experience And Faculty Qualifications In U.S. Intelligence Courses, Jonathan Smith Oct 2013

Amateur Hour? Experience And Faculty Qualifications In U.S. Intelligence Courses, Jonathan Smith

Journal of Strategic Security

As intelligence studies programs and courses continue to grow in the United States, the demand for qualified faculty to service these activities also continues to grow. However, the paucity of graduate programs in the field and the specialized nature of the instruction has the potential to lead to staffing challenges. This article reviews the findings of an empirical survey of intelligence faculty at U.S. civilian colleges and universities. It is found that most faculty who teach courses in intelligence have prior work experience in the field of intelligence. Indeed, many come with a substantial background in the craft, as well …

The Lockwood Analytical Method For Prediction Within A Probabilistic Framework, Jai Singh Oct 2013

The Lockwood Analytical Method For Prediction Within A Probabilistic Framework, Jai Singh

Journal of Strategic Security

A critical aspect of the role of intelligence, within the context of conflict situations involving national level actors, is the reduction in uncertainty associated with ascertaining information relevant to policy makers. Structured techniques for intelligence analysis seek to reduce this uncertainty by the implementation and use of stepwise methods in which each step within the process is transparent and through which the uncertainty generated by cognitive bias is limited. One such method, which serves as the contextual basis for this study, is the Lockwood Analytic Method for Prediction (LAMP). The focus of the study is the recasting of traditional implementation …

Unusual Polygenetic Void And Cave Development In Dolomitized Miocene Chalks On Barbados, West Indies, Jonathan B. Sumrall, John E. Mylroie, Hans G. Machel

International Journal of Speleology

Barbados provides an unusual case of polygenetic cave development within dolomitized chalks and marls of the Miocene Oceanics Group. These diagenetic processes are driven by a succession and interplay of tectonic uplift, fracturing, hypogene fluid injection, overprinting by mixing zone diagenesis, and mechanical and biological erosion in the current littoral zone. The significance of the voids and caves within the chalks on Barbados are: 1) these appear to be the first dissolution caves documented in dolomitized chalk, and 2) these features show a polygenetic origin documenting the diagenetic changes in lithology that allowed the development and preservation of these cave …
