STAT3, also known as signal transducer and activator of transcription 3, is a DNA transcription enzyme. In mammals including humans, STAT3 regulates the expression of a variety of genes that play a role in embryonic development. Specifically, STAT3 regulates cell division, cell differentiation and cell death (apoptosis). During embryonic development, STAT3 proteins are phosphorylated in a cell's cytoplasm in response to chemical growth factors. Once phosphorylated, STAT3 proteins pair up to form homodimers that act like pliers. STAT3 homodimers are transferred into the cell nucleus, where they bind to DNA to regulate embryonic development. When mutations of the STAT3 gene …

This paper describes the first phase of SunBay Digital Mathematics Project’s attempt to improve the middle school mathematics learning ecology of a large, urban district. A dynamic unit incorporating SimCalc MathWorlds® (Roschelle, Knudsen, & Hegedus, 2009) was scaled up to support efforts to teach rate and proportionality. Findings discuss implementation, professional development, and the power of technology to build support for extended programs of change.

This study uses a measure of the on-track or off-track status of students at the end of grade 9 as an indicator of whether students in five Texas districts would graduate from high school in four years. In all five districts, on-time graduation rates were higher for students who were on track at the end of grade 9 than for students who were off track, both for students overall and for all racial/ethnic groups.

Belonging to a group that is in the minority in an organization (e.g., racial, cultural) inherently puts individuals at a social disadvantage among the majority group, which can position them in ways so as not to be able to build political skill and acquire power and influence in organizations. Those in the minority must feel genuinely committed to their groups while simultaneously leveraging opportunities outside their groups, if they are to secure and maintain personal power. The propositions provided in this conceptualization argue that individuals who are less committed to their group tend to be significantly more personally maladjusted, which, …

Staff at Heritage Village submitted a grant to the Florida Humanities Council in 2002. At the time, Heritage Village hoped to develop an interpretive plan for the structures on site and realized that the archival materials related to historical structures and features had many gaps. James A. Schnur served as a humanities scholar tasked with reviewing archival holdings, compiling accurate information about the owners/occupants of the structures on site, and creating instructional documents that would guide the interpretive plan. This booklet, subdivided by chapters for each notable structure, includes a summary of important information and a detailed narrative. The research …
