Late Neandertals In Southeastern Iberia: Sima De Las Palomas Del Cabezo Gordo, Murcia, Spain, Michael J. Walker, Josep Gibert, Mariano V. López

KIP Articles

Middle Paleolithic fossil human remains from the Sima de las Palomas in southeastern Iberia (dated to ≤43,000–40,000 calendar years before present) present a suite of derived Neandertal and/or retained ancestral morphological features in the mandibular symphysis, mandibular ramus, dental occlusal morphology, and distal hand phalanx. These traits are combined with variation in the mandibular corpus, discrete dental morphology, tooth root lengths, and anterior dental size that indicate a frequency difference with earlier Iberian and more northern European Neandertals. The Palomas Neandertals therefore confirm the late presence of Neandertals associated with the Iberian persistence of the Middle Paleolithic, but suggest microevolutionary …

Latest Information On Sterkfontein's Australopithecus Skeleton And A New Look At Australopithecus, Ronald J. Clarke

KIP Articles

After a decade of careful excavation, it is now possible to explain how the skeleton came to be in that isolated position in the cavern. Furthermore, it is apparent that the fossil does not belong to either Australopithecus africanus or to A. afarensis, but to an individual belonging to, or closely affiliated to, the second Australopithecus species that is represented in Sterkfontein Member 4 and Makapansgat.

Environmental Monitoring In The Mechara Caves, Southeastern Ethiopia: Implications For Speleothem Palaeoclimate Studies, Asfawossen Asrat, Andy Baker, Melanie J. Leng

KIP Articles

The interpretation of palaeoclimate records in speleothems depends on the understanding of the modern climate of the region, the geology, the hydrology above the caves, and the within-cave climate. Monitoring within-cave climate variability, geochemistry of speleothem-forming drip waters, and associated surface and groundwater, provides a modern baseline for interpretation of speleothem palaeohydrological and palaeoclimate records. Here, we present results of such monitoring of the Mechara caves in southeastern Ethiopia, conducted between 2004 and 2007. Results show nearly constant within-cave climate (temperature and humidity) in all caves, which generally reflects the surface climate. Groundwater and surface water geochemistry is similar across …

Regular Stalagmites: The Theory Behind Their Shape, Wolfgang Dreybrodt, Douchko Romanov Jun 2008

Regular Stalagmites: The Theory Behind Their Shape, Wolfgang Dreybrodt, Douchko Romanov

KIP Articles

Under growth conditions constant in time stalagmites grow into an equilibrium shape, which is established, when all points of its surface are shifting by the same vertical distance during a time interval . Thereby is the precipitation rate in , is the calcium concentration of the supersaturated solution dripping to the apex of the stalagmite, and its equilibrium concentration with respect to calcite and the in the cave atmosphere. From these ingredients a numerical model of stalagmite growth into an equilibrium shape is presented. In this model one assumes idealistically that the water dripping to the apex flows continuously down …

Quaternary Paleoclimate Of The North-Eastern Boundary Of The Saharan Desert: Reconstruction From Speleothems Of Negev Desert, Israel, Vaks Anton

KIP Articles

Carbonate cave deposits (speleothems) from caves of the Israeli deserts were used to reconstruct the paleoclimate conditions of the northern boundary of SaharanArabian Desert. The deserts studied in this work are of two types: the Negev Desert in southern Israel, which is part of the Saharan-Arabian desert belt; and the "rain shadow" desert located east of Central Mountain Ridge (CMR) in the rift valleys of the Jordan River and Dead-Sea (Judean Desert). The presence of speleothems in numerous caves in these present-day arid regions indicates that humid climatic conditions (i.e., periods with positive effective precipitation/infiltration index) occurred in the past. …

Layla Lakes, Saudi Arabia: The World-Wide Largest Lacustrine Gypsum Tufas, Stephan Kempe, Heiko Dirks

KIP Articles

Throughout the center of Saudi Arabia the anhydrite upper Jurassic Heeth formation can be followed N to S. Locally it is punctured by hypogene karst sinkholes. The most prominent are the former Layla Lakes at 22.17N 46.70E. The lakes (17 originally) have been drained in the late 1980's, revealing 19 sinkholes, some of them composites of several subsidence centers. The largest is 1.1 km long, 0.4 km wide and about 40 m deep. Others are less than 10 m across and rather recent. The bottom of the former lakes and the flats around them are composed of thick layers of …

Hydrogeological Characterization Of Baseflow To Jacob’S Well Spring, Hays County, Texas, Sarah Cain Davidson Jan 2008

Hydrogeological Characterization Of Baseflow To Jacob’S Well Spring, Hays County, Texas, Sarah Cain Davidson

KIP Articles

Jacob’s Well is a karst spring that discharges from the Trinity aquifer in central Texas. Ongoing development and increased groundwater pumping in the area around the spring are thought to be impacting the volume of discharge at the spring—however, the source of spring discharge is poorly understood. The goals of this study are to characterize the chemistry of springflow and nearby surface waters and groundwaters and to identify the source or sources of water that contribute flow to the spring under low flow conditions. The spring is located in the Middle Trinity aquifer within the Lower Cretaceous Trinity Group in …

The Role Of The Epikarst In Karst And Cave Hydrogeology: A Review, Paul W. Willimas Jan 2008

The Role Of The Epikarst In Karst And Cave Hydrogeology: A Review, Paul W. Willimas

KIP Articles

The epikarst (also known as the subcutaneous zone) comprises highly weathered carbonate bedrock immediately beneath the surface or beneath the soil (when present) or exposed at the surface. Porosity and permeability are higher near the surface than at depth, consequently after recharge percolating rainwater is detained near the base of the epikarst, the detention ponding producing an epikarstic aquifer. Such an aquifer is found only where the uppermost part of the vadose zone is very weathered compared to the bedrock at depth. Sometimes this contrast in porosity and permeability does not occur either because the epikarst has been scraped off …
