Discovery And Early Monitoring Of A New Florida Grasshopper Sparrow Population On Ranchlands In Osceola County: Evidence Of Metapopulation Connectivity, Erin L. Hewett Ragheb, Karl E. Miller, Archer F. Larned, Mary S. Peterson

In 2012, the critically endangered Florida Grasshopper Sparrow (Ammodramus savannarum floridanus) was known to exist only on three public conservation areas with native dry prairie habitat. In 2013, an additional site was discovered on a grazed, semi-improved cattle ranch in Osceola County, Florida, USA (hereafter the Ranch). We describe initial results from an effort to establish a long-term demographic monitoring program at the Ranch (2014–2016). Band-resighting data revealed that the Ranch supported a minimum population of 29 territorial males in 2015 and 19 in 2016, representing 39% and 34% of the known wild male population, respectively. The weighted …

Mosquito Lagoon, the northernmost portion of the Indian River Lagoon along the eastern coast of Florida, is home to a variety of both resident and migratory bird species, including over a dozen categorized as either threatened or endangered in the state of Florida. Though birds have previously been monitored in parts of the central and southern Indian River Lagoon system, there has been little research on birds in Mosquito Lagoon. In this study, we used 2 years of survey data to evaluate the abundance and diversity of the avian community in Mosquito Lagoon. We made 22,085 bird observations, including 67 …

The Florida Scrub-Jay (Aphelocoma coerulescens) is the only bird en- demic to Florida and is now listed as imperiled under the Federal Endangered Species Act. The primary reasons for this status are the loss of scrub habitat to development and inconsistent land management. Even with the protection provided by state and fed- eral laws, many jay populations are likely to disappear as a result of their small size and isolation from larger populations. We assessed 14 years (2007–2020) of data from Jay Watch, a statewide citizen-science initiative, in Indian River County Florida where fragmented sites range from 3.5–6.5 …

Viability Of A Florida Scrub-Jay (Aphelocoma Coerulescens) Population In North-Central Florida, Dustin E. Brewer, Ralph Risch
Florida Field Naturalist
Exceedingly limited breeding range, dispersal ability, and habitat connectivity tend to characterize species as at risk of extinction. A species endemic to Florida, the Florida Scrub-jay (Aphelocoma coerulescens; scrub-jay), exemplifies these characteristics, which have contributed to its alarming, roughly 90% population decline since the 1800s. To help stop or reverse this ongoing decline, land managers should communicate scrub-jay population trends to facilitate conversations about the effectiveness of respective management regimes within and between metapopulations and to identify regions in particular need of conservation focus. We report scrub-jay population survey data at Seminole State Forest (SSF) in north-central Florida between 2008 …

American Flamingos are among the most iconic—and rarest—of Florida’s native birds. Though historical large flocks were decimated by hunting, small groups of flamingos of unknown origin persist in Florida today. Here, we report a satellite telemetry study of an American Flamingo in Florida Bay, Florida, USA, over a 22-month period. The flamingo used an extensive tidal flat at Snake Bight (Everglades National Park) and numerous mangrove-fringed mudflats inside keys within Florida Bay. Movement patterns varied by time of day and time of year and indicated that movements were tracking hydroperiod and prey availability across a landscape mosaic of spatially and …

Habitat Use And Movements Of Feral Mallards (Anas Platyrhynchos) And Invasive Muscovy Ducks (Cairina Moschata) In Tampa, Florida, Joni Downs, Mehrdad Vaziri, Lucy Deba Enomah, Zachary J. Smith
Florida Field Naturalist
Feral Mallards (Anas platyrhynchos) and invasive Muscovy Ducks (Cairina moschata) are common waterfowl in urban areas in many parts of the world, though relatively little is known about their habits and movements. This study quantified the fine-scale movements and habitat-use patterns of feral Mallards and Muscovy Ducks in an urban area of Tampa, Florida, from hour-long observational and tracking data. Mallards spent more time in water than Muscovy Ducks (41.0% vs. 9.1%), less time in grass (2.8% vs. 21.5%), and less time in urban areas (0.5% vs. 8.0%). Times spent by Mallards and Muscovy Ducks in …

Urbanization is rapidly changing the landscape in which birds live. Habitat alteration and degradation and changes in food resources are affecting the distribution and abundance of birds in urban areas. Jacksonville is the largest city in Florida and is undergoing considerable growth. We investigated how urbanization might affect avian abundance and diversity at four sites in Jacksonville, Florida. For all sites we calculated land cover percentages (tree cover, ground cover, impervious surfaces, water, and shrubs) at three spatial scales (50-m, 100-m, and 1,000-m radius) to encompass the area sampled for birds and the larger urban matrix. We conducted point counts …

Florida Field Naturalist
The fall 2018 meeting of the Florida Ornithological Society featured a special set of oral presentations and posters prepared primarily by students associated with Florida universities. Many of the presentations will likely lead to full-length articles, but Abstracts submitted by participants are provided here for members of the Florida Ornithological Society who could not attend the meeting and to serve as a record of the breadth of research underway by the next generation of Florida scientists.
The oral presentations and posters sessions were organized by Peter Monte (Department of Wildlife Ecology and Conservation, University of Florida). Thanks to Peter for …
