Equal Goals, Unequal Standards: The Policy Debate On Goalpost Dimensions In Women’S Football, Tarlan Chahardovali, Johan Rewilak Ph.D.
Faculty Publications
This study critically examines proposals to reduce goalpost sizes in women’s football; a debate often framed as a practical adjustment to accommodate physiological differences between male and female goalkeepers. Using data from men’s and women’s professional English football within two distinct periods (1951–1975 and 2011–2025), we investigate whether differences in goalkeepers’ height, gender and training are associated with variations in goals conceded. Our findings reveal that taller goalkeepers concede fewer goals; however, this relationship is U-shaped and this benefit diminishes beyond a certain point. We also find that improved coaching and investment, proxied by additional training via national team selection, …

Waste Streams From Next Generation Molten Salt Reactors: The Challenge Of Creating An Insoluble Ceramic For Chloride Salt Waste, Alevtina A. Maksimova, Jake W. Amoroso, Matthew Page, Gregory Morrison, Hans Conrad Zur Loye
Faculty Publications
Molten salt reactors (MSRs) design development is of interest to many research groups and companies. Waste management for MSRs is one of the most important issues that needs to be resolved due to its impact on environmental safety, primarily via the dissolution of radionuclides in water. Furthermore, the waste treatment strategy will have a significant influence on the operating cost of MSRs, which is why a reliable process for the immobilization, transportation, storage and disposal of MSR waste must be addressed. This work presents a new approach for the immobilization of chloride salts from molten salt reactors in stable oxyhalide …

Clinical Practice in Athletic Training
Context: Developing athletic training students’ soft skills to effectively engage in patient-centered care is integrated throughout multiple Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education Curricular Content Standards. Despite evidence supporting the importance of compassionate care, there is currently data to suggest that health care is experiencing a compassion crisis. The purpose of this study was to investigate the ways pre-professional athletic training students transfer knowledge from a soft skills curriculum to clinical experiences as students in an entry level master’s program.
Methods: This study is an explanatory sequential mixed methods design. Phase 1 includes participants (n = 19) enrolled in …

Automated Guided Wave Characterization Of Marcelling: In-Plane Fiber Waviness In Thermoplastic Composites, Sourav Banerjee, Ana Tudor, Corey Leydig, Thomas Ferguson, Tally Bovender, Darun Barazanchy, Josh Widosky, Paul Ziehl
Faculty Publications
Thermoplastic composite (TPC) materials often develop in-plane fiber waviness during manufacturing, a defect known as marcelling. Marcelling negatively impacts the strength and overall performance of the composite and are hard to control. While it may appear as a surface imperfection, it can also extend partially through the thickness of the material. Currently, there is no established nondestructive evaluation (NDE) method to reliably detect and quantify marcelling in composites after manufacturing. As marcelling is not a local defect but spans across the surface in in-plane dimensions of the structure, traditional pulse-echo and phased-array ultrasonic NDE are ineffective. Automated multi-directional guided …

Teams researchers, meta-analysts, and others often study relationships between group-level constructs measured by aggregating individual-level variables, but it is well-known that group-mean correlations are influenced by individual-level relationships. We review multilevel issues and current practices in estimating and adjusting group-mean associations. We give special attention to comparisons across levels of analysis, and to adjustments for estimating population parameters. A Monte Carlo simulation study indicates that the two most commonly used adjustments in meta-analysis are ineffective in estimating population-based effect sizes. They frequently overestimate true relationships, sometimes severely. Indeed, simulations show that common adjustments move estimates away from population values in …

Application Of Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis In Pharmacy And Therapeutics Committee Formulary Decision-Making: A Systematic Review And Proof-Of-Concept Framework, Georges Adunlin, Riley Atkinson
Posters
Background: Pharmacy and therapeutics (P&T) committees must evaluate competing medications within the constraints of finite healthcare resources. Traditional formulary decision-making processes may inadequately capture the multidimensional value of medications. Multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA) has emerged as a structured approach to incorporate clinical, economic, and operational considerations; however, evidence of its real-world application in P&T committee decision-making remains limited. Objectives: (1) To systematically review and synthesize published literature describing the use of MCDA in formulary decision-making by P&T committees. (2) To develop a conceptual MCDA framework and demonstrate its feasibility through a proof-of-concept application within a P&T committee context. Methods: A …

Patient Perspectives On Telehealth In Routine Diabetes Follow-Up Care: A Qualitative Focus Group Study Of Adults With Type 2 Diabetes, Diamant Gashi, Meagen Rosenthal
Posters
Background: Type 2 diabetes is a common chronic condition in the United States and requires ongoing follow-up to monitor glycemic control, review laboratory results, adjust medications, and address self-management needs. Telehealth has become an increasingly common component of diabetes care, yet its role in routine follow-up remains underexamined. Existing qualitative studies highlight both benefits, such as convenience and reduced travel, and limitations, including challenges with physical assessment and sharing home monitoring data. However, less is known about how adults with type 2 diabetes determine where telehealth fits within the practical realities of routine follow-up care. Objective: To explore how adults …

Posters
Background: Concurrent benzodiazepine (BZD) use among patients receiving buprenorphine for opioid use disorder (OUD) is common in routine care and presents a critical clinical dilemma. While buprenorphine improves survival and reduces overdose risk, co-exposure to central nervous system depressants may increase the risk of adverse events. However, medication-specific real-world evidence remains limited, and existing studies report conflicting findings. Objective: To synthesize real-world observational evidence on safety outcomes associated with concurrent BZD use during buprenorphine treatment and to critically appraise study quality using ROBINS-I V2. Methods: We conducted a critical narrative review following PRISMA guidelines. PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase, and Web of Science …

Proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells are promising for clean and efficient energy conversion across diverse applications. High-temperature PEM fuel cells (HT-PEMFCs) using phosphoric acid (PA)-doped polybenzimidazole (PBI) can operate up to 200°C, but at lower temperatures, water-induced PA loss often leads to performance degradation and reduced durability. In this work, we present a new class of main-chain ion-pair PBI membranes by integrating the imidazolium-biphosphate ion-pair units directly into the PBI backbone. This design results in membranes with high acid content, stronger acid-polymer interactions and stabilized acid retention. In single-cell tests, the Im+-PBI15-3 wt.% exhibits peak power densities of 0.79 …

White Matter Microstructure Of Sensorimotor Projection Fibers In Chronic Low Back Pain, John R. White, Jennifer M.C. Vendemia, Zachary Baty, Sheri Silfies, Stephen A. Coombes
Faculty Publications
Introduction:
Chronic low back pain (cLBP) is linked to altered cortical sensorimotor structure and function, yet white matter microstructure in sensorimotor projection fibers remains poorly characterized. Objective: To address this gap, we used diffusion MRI to comprehensively characterize sensorimotor projection fibers in 44 patients with cLBP and 41 matched healthy controls.
Methods:
We estimated an array of microstructural measures, including fractional anisotropy (FA), extracellular free water fraction (FW), free water–corrected FA (fwcFA), and neurite orientation dispersion and density imaging (NODDI) metrics.
Results:
General linear models identified significantly higher FA and fwcFA and lower orientation dispersion index (ODI) in cLBP vs …

In today's fast-paced and high-pressure society, maintaining emotional well-being requires effective strategies for managing everyday negative affect. This research examines the role of service experiences in reducing negative affect and introduces experience therapy as a novel strategy for affect regulation. Through a series of studies, we assess the effectiveness of experience therapy and investigate how different service experiences—varying in levels of personal effort involvement and social involvement—contribute to negative affect regulation. The findings demonstrate that experiences requiring high personal effort and social involvement are particularly effective in alleviating negative affect, especially among emotionally stressed individuals. These effects are mediated, respectively, …

The transition from the juvenile to adult vegetative phase in Arabidopsis thaliana is a fundamental developmental process that integrates morphological and physiological maturation. Despite extensive study, how vegetative phase change is regulated and how this phase transition is coordinated with plant physiology remain incompletely understood. This review synthesizes recent advances in the molecular regulation and physiological functions of vegetative phase change. We summarize how developmental traits—such as leaf shape, trichome distribution, and margin serration—are controlled through distinct downstream targets of the age-dependent miR156–SPL pathway. We further highlight emerging insights into how epigenetic factors dynamically modify chromatin states of key regulatory …

The atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945 created a unique environment of acute, high-dose ionizing radiation, contrasting sharply with the chronic low-dose rate exposure in the Chernobyl and Fukushima Exclusion Zones. This stands in stark contrast to the chronic, low-dose rate contamination that defines the Chernobyl and Fukushima Exclusion Zones. While the long-term ecological effects of the latter are well-documented, a systematic synthesis of the floral response to the atomic bombings is lacking. This review integrates historical data with modern radio-ecological principles to analyze plant survival and succession. We document the remarkable recovery of vegetation, from the resprouting …
