Implementing An Abnormal Involuntary Movement Scale At An Outpatient Mental Health Clinic, Amanda Ghamsari
Doctor of Nursing Practice Final Manuscripts
Background: Movement disorders caused from psychotropic medications affect an estimated 500,000 people in the United States. These disorders bring an added cost for treatment to the patient, cause emotional distress, and may hinder daily life. Overall health and additional medication costs were increased for these patients by $25,879 per patient per year compared to patients without a movement disorder.
Purpose of Project: To address the issue, the team of mental health providers at an outpatient clinic assess their mental health patients at start of care and at follow up visits utilizing the Abnormal Involuntary Movement Scale. With the goal of …

Keep Our Children Smiling: Fluoride Varnish Education In The Pediatric Primary Care Setting, Isabella Mortola
Doctor of Nursing Practice Final Manuscripts
Background: Dental caries is the most common chronic childhood disease. In early childhood, it is associated with many negative factors such as pain, loss of teeth, and impaired growth. Fluoride varnish (FV) is a protective resin coating treatment that is reimbursable by most insurances and is recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), United States Preventative Services Task Force (USPSTF), and the American Dental Association (ADA) due to its high efficacy in preventing dental caries. FV is a low-cost treatment that can be easily applied in 1-2 minutes during a well-child visit in the primary care setting, where children …

The Cure For World Peace: A Public Health Strategy, Eva Eleftheriadis
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Health and the environment impact the security and stability of the global community, as can be seen through the effects of pandemics and climate change. This paper attempts to address these factors by helping create a preventative strategy for countries to be better equipped to face these challenges, and decrease the extent of future manifestations. Starting with a comparative analysis of the Black Death and the COVID-19 pandemic, this paper explores the relationship that exists between health, the environment, and human behavior. The analysis suggests that when these aspects are mutually beneficial, there is an increase in human security, which …
The Future Of Health Care Conscience Laws Post-Dobbs, Nadia N. Sawicki
The Future Of Health Care Conscience Laws Post-Dobbs, Nadia N. Sawicki
The Journal of Contemporary Legal Issues
The Supreme Court’s rejection of a constitutional right to choose abortion in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization has prompted legislatures to make significant changes to state laws. Some states have criminalized abortion in most circumstances, while others have granted patients and health care providers broader rights to choose and access abortion. Another, perhaps less-recognized, avenue for legislative change is by amending existing state conscience laws. This Article describes the avenues state legislatures might take in using conscience laws to impact abortion access in accordance with the state’s policy preferences.

Grassroots Talent Development At La Maestra: Understanding The Perceptions Of Leaders And Staff, Gorn Huvanandana
Dissertations
This dissertation explored the leadership and staff perceptions of talent management (TM) in the San Diego-based community health center La Maestra. The organization initiated a scheme called Grassroots Talent Development (GTD) that focuses on developing its internal talents from the ground up, including using mentorship, on-the-job training, problem-solving techniques, and mission attachment reinforcement. The distinctive use of a holistic wellness model, Circle of Care (CoC), stemming from its core mission to serve underserved populations, has not only driven how the organization functions but also how it attracts, develops, and retains a diverse pool of talents. La Maestra innovated programs for …

Reconnecting And Reengaging In 2021: Building Strong Nonprofit Teams For The Future, The Nonprofit Institute At The University Of San Diego
Nonprofit Sector Issues and Trends
Prepared on behalf of The Nonprofit Institute by Nonprofit Leadership and Management graduate students.
Nonprofit organizations often operate within a good deal of uncertainty, even in good times. During a crisis, organizations may need to quickly implement changes. Nonprofit employers have had to retract, restore, and in some cases, reinvent their human capital management systems and processes to align with the new normal. This document, created by University of San Diego students studying LEAD 505: Developing Human Capital, offers some basic considerations and strategies for nonprofit organizations related to managing their workforce in times of crisis.
Using Short Message Services (Sms) To Reduce No-Show Rates An Evidence-Based Practice Project, Matthew Rocklage
Using Short Message Services (Sms) To Reduce No-Show Rates An Evidence-Based Practice Project, Matthew Rocklage
Doctor of Nursing Practice Final Manuscripts
Abstract
Background: No-shows (NS) are correlated with reduced treatment efficacy, increased financial burden on medical institutions, and early treatment termination for therapy. NS occur for a variety of reasons and appointment compliance within outpatient mental health clinics has a wide variance with clinics reporting no-shows ranging from 15% to 50%. This section of the project is a continuation started by an earlier USD DNP student Fernando Serrano, in which the projects aims were expanded beyond the participation of nurse practitioners only to now include marriage family therapists (MFT), psychologists and medical residents, and to address the NS rates clinic-wide. One …

Abstract
Title: Transforming Clinical Care Through Sexual Wellness Education for Community College Students
Statement of the Problem: Unintended pregnancy remains a serious public health challenge throughout the world (World Health Organization [WHO], 2018). College-aged students continue to be a vulnerable population for this health issue, with estimates that 1 in 5 women will give birth before age twenty and 80% of those pregnancies unintended (Guttmacher Institute, 2019). Despite the statistics, approximately 40% of college students have received formal education on unintended pregnancy, sexually transmitted infections (STIs), or effective contraception use (Diedrich, Klein, & Peipert, 2017). According to the World Health …

Abstract
Background: The 2016 National Survey on Drug Use and Health reported that 53 percent of people that misused pain relievers in the past year received them from a friend or relative. The NIDA describes that from 2002 to 2008 that drug abuse in service members went from 2% to 11%. Often patients are initially prescribed and introduced to opioid medication for acute pain. One such circumstance is in the perioperative period that could provide an opportunity to promote opioid-sparing techniques to reduce the exposure to opioids.
Purpose of Project: To assess discharge medication characteristics and reinforce discharge medication instructions …

La Maestra’S Circle Of Care: Studying The Impact Of An Integrated Service Model On The Health And Well-Being Of Vulnerable Populations, Zara Marselian
Dissertations
ABSTRACT
There is an urgent need to reform the health care delivery system in the United States, as recognized through current bipartisan efforts. Society’s vulnerable populations especially need health care reform as health care outcomes are the poorest among disadvantaged populations. Moreover, vulnerable populations are twice as likely to develop chronic diseases than the general population and they remain ill due to other contextual, societal factors affecting their ability to achieve health and well-being. This population is subjected to adverse life events that suggest a more comprehensive approach to health and well-being is called for.

Background/Objectives: Missed appointments (MAs) are correlated with reduced treatment efficacy, increased financial burden on medical institutions, and early treatment terminations for therapy (DeFife, Conklin, Smith, & Poole, 2010). MAs occur for a variety of reasons including, but not limited to severity of illness, financial/geographic constraints, and forgetting the appointment (Filippidou, Lingwood, & Mirza, 2014). Appointment compliance within outpatient mental health clinics has a wide variance with some clinics reporting MAs ranging from 15% to 50% (Car, Gurol-Urganci, de Jongh, Vodopivec-Jamsek, & Atun, 2013).
