From Party Policy To Law: The Formalization Of The Chinese Communist Party’S Role In State-Owned Enterprise Governance, Jie Zeng
San Diego International Law Journal
For the first time, grassroots branches of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) were formally granted leadership roles and major decision-making authority under Chinese Company Law in 2024. This change has made China the only jurisdiction that has, at the national law level, authorized its main political party to engage directly in corporate governance without being a shareholder. While this may appear to be the result of President Xi Jinping’s party-building campaign, party involvement in corporate governance goes back to the Maoist era. This Article examines the evolution of state-owned enterprise (SOE) governance from 1949 to the present, illustrating that even …

Calvip Cohort 4 Local Evaluation Report: Peace And Justice Law Center’S Legal Services To Support Gang Desistance, Nyla Baxter-Williamson Ma, Kirsten Chaplin Ma, Tori Luna Ma, Topher Mcdougal Phd
Kroc IPJ Research and Resources
This Local Evaluation Report assesses the implementation and outcomes of the Peace and Justice Law Center’s Legal Services to Support Gang Desistance (LSSGD) project, funded by the California Board of State and Community Correction’s California Violence Intervention and Prevention Program (CalVIP) Grant, Cohort 4. Through LSSGD, PJLC sought to provide direct legal services to current or formerly gang-involved individuals, as well as those treated by law enforcement as gang-involved, to reduce legal obstacles to desistance, expand access to lawful employment, promote family stability, and improve trust in legal institutions. The Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace and Justice (Kroc IPJ) …
Burning Out: A Narrative Exploration Of The Adaptive Challenge And Scaffolds Built Toward Sustenance Among Immigrant Rights Activists In San Diego County, Anna C. Runion
Dissertations
Activist burnout has been identified as one of the greatest threats to social movement sustainability, and the lived experience of paid immigrant rights activists remains undertheorized. This narrative inquiry explored activist burnout among 10 San Diego County immigrant rights activists, revealing how this community understands burnout, what factors contribute to its production, and how activists sustain themselves within it. Using Clandinin and Connelly’s (2000) narrative inquiry methodology, the researcher conducted in-depth individual interviews with ten activists representing a range of intersectional identities and roles. Narrative profiles were analyzed through holistic narrative reading, narrative reporting, structural and emergent coding, and cross-narrative …

We Didn’T Start The Fire: For And Against Koppelman On The Corruption Of Libertarianism, Roderick T. Long
We Didn’T Start The Fire: For And Against Koppelman On The Corruption Of Libertarianism, Roderick T. Long
The Journal of Contemporary Legal Issues
At the philosophic core of libertarianism is a set of market-oriented commitments that are entirely compatible with, and indeed congenial to, traditional leftist concerns with the well-being of the disadvantaged in society. But over the past several decades, the libertarian movement has fallen increasingly under the spell of toxic, callous, right-wing versions of libertarianism that scorn empathy while championing the cause of the economic winners in society at the expense of those who lose out.
That’s one way of stating the central thesis of Andrew Koppelman’s book Burning Down the House. And that thesis, so stated, is one I …

Federal Impacts On Nonprofits: San Diego County Survey Of Nonprofit Leaders, Laura Deitrick, Tessa Tinkler, Bryan Cardenas, Richard Hurt, Nallely Manriques, Timothy Nelson
Nonprofit Sector Issues and Trends
For decades, nonprofits have been key partners to the government, delivering vital services on its behalf. Beyond their social impact, San Diego nonprofits are integral to the local economy—not only as major employers but also through their contributions to health and welfare, arts and culture, education, and research and innovation, among other sectors.
Research estimates that government funding accounts for 30% of nonprofit revenue. Our findings show that executive orders and other federal policy changes have a significant impact on nonprofits in our region, affecting a wide range of causes and missionsincluding:
- Performing arts and museums
- Education and in-and after-school …

Operational Solutions To Everyday Problems From Border Advocates At Jewish Family Service Of San Diego, Kate Clark, Reilly Frye
San Diego Law Review
Day in and day out, across administrations at all levels of government, a cadre of impassioned change agents, including advocates, service providers, community stakeholders, and grassroots organizations, are called to action to fight. Through exhaustion and fatigue, this group unequivocally continues to center humanity and uplift sustainable solutions.
As a “border attorney,” I have been proximate to this work and space for more than fourteen years, the entirety of which has been at Jewish Family Service of San Diego (JFS), a refugee resettlement organization, pro bono legal service provider, and operator of the San Diego Rapid Response Network Migrant Shelter …
How Do Lgbt Employees Assess Their Firm’S Organizational Culture Regarding Lgbt Leadership?, Philippe Honore
How Do Lgbt Employees Assess Their Firm’S Organizational Culture Regarding Lgbt Leadership?, Philippe Honore
Dissertations
This study explored Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Trans (LGBT) employees’ perceptions and assessments of their firms’ organizational cultures and, in particular, the opportunities within the culture that can lead to upper management positions for those who identify as LGBT. The research sought to understand the extent to which inclusivity efforts are reflected in real career progression opportunities for openly LGBT employees working in San Diego County. Employing a convergent parallel mixed-methods research design, the study incorporated quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews to achieve a comprehensive understanding of participant’s perspectives and experiences. The decision to use both methods allowed the research …

Convergence And Divergence: Comparative Analysis Of Procedural Rule Changes Of The Hong Kong And Singapore International Arbitration Centers Within The Framework Of Neo-Institutional Theory, Phillip Hoang Tran
Dissertations
International commercial arbitration (ICA) plays an essential role in resolving disputes between companies engaged in complex, cross-border business transactions. It offers an efficient, neutral, and enforceable mechanism for resolving disputes across different legal and cultural backgrounds. ICA is generally conducted at international arbitration centers located throughout the world. According to the extant literature, there is convergence of procedural rules among these centers. Sabharwal and Zaman (2014), for example, claim increasing convergence of procedural rules among all the major arbitration centers. Similarly, Sharma (2021) proposes that this convergence helps build the international arbitration system. However, there is a near absence of …

Guide To The Alan Bersin Papers, Alan Douglas Bersin
Special Collections
The Alan Bersin papers consist of records collected by Bersin during his tenure as the Superintendent of San Diego City Schools and the Secretary of Education for the State of California. The vast majority of the records are in the form of correspondence, memoranda, meeting minutes, reports, and newspaper articles. These records delve into the workings of Bersin's office, planning behind such programs as the Blueprint for Student Success, the Institute for Learning, Special Education, and Charter Schools. Correspondence, news articles, and court cases document reaction to those programs from the public, labor unions, and the San Diego Board of …

Addressing Chronic Violence From A Gendered Perspective: Fostering People-Centered Approaches At The National Level (Case Study: Jamaica), Elena B. Stavrevska, Nattecia Nerene Bohardsingh, María Dolores Hernández Montoya, Tania Cecilia Martínez, Briana Mawby, Aliza Carns
Kroc IPJ Research and Resources
Violence has traditionally been viewed through the lens of armed conflict or specific, concrete violent incidents. However, it is necessary to understand that violence may be a chronic phenomenon— a persistent, deeply ingrained aggression affecting daily lives.
The report makes the case for reconceptualizing violence in the Women, Peace and Security (WPS) and gender equality fields, building upon feminist conceptions of the continuum of violence to recognize that societal structures, systemic discrimination and even pervasive cultural norms can be sources of violence. This comprehensive view has significant implications for policy, demanding multisectoral strategies that address not just symptoms but the …
