Tiktok Use, Flow, And Addictive Behaviors, Santiago Vigil May 2024

Tiktok Use, Flow, And Addictive Behaviors, Santiago Vigil

Research Month

Since TikTok's release in 2017, it has become one of the more popular social media apps in the country. TikTok app design exploits sensory preferences through continuous scrolling, providing a seamless infinite amount of content. We hypothesized that TikTok immerses users in an unproductive version of the flow state, that may lead to addiction-like behaviors among users. We also hypothesized that TikTok’s design may be associated with boredom proneness, anxiety, self-esteem, and GPA. Using a correlational measure, USD students were asked to answer self-report measures and questions about their social media use to differentiate between platforms. Using Instagram as comparison …

Melodies Are Not A Useful Mnemonic Cue For Immediate Word Recall, Isabella Ramirez

Research Month

Mnemonic devices and jingles paired with a musical melody have long been used as study skills for students to remember the capitals of the United States and other facts, as well as aiding adults in memorizing grocery lists, reminding themselves of English grammar rules, and various other tasks. Though this perceived phenomenon has been recognized by previous studies, research is mixed on the effectiveness of utilizing music in order to improve learning and memory. In the current study, we tested the effects of unfamiliar and familiar melodies on the memorization of unrelated word lists compared to a spoken control condition. …

Qualitative Experiences Of Bilingual Speakers, Denise Picazo

Research Month

The purpose of this qualitative study was to gain a better understanding of the lived experience personal, social, and cognitive impacts of bilinguals. There is extensive data that shows that bilinguals are particularly well-suited for task-switching, executive control, and divergent thinking (Poarch & Bialystock, 2015). Qualitative experiences and participant perspectives help better understand the individuating experiences of those who are bilingual (Higby et al., 2023; Lopez et al., 2023). Our study asked bilinguals about living as a bilingual person in San Diego, CA. We held several focus groups. These focus group findings will inform future quantitative studies in our lab, …

Expansion Of Hydra Phylogeny And Biogeography With The Help Of Citizen Scientists, Emma Mcintyre

Research Month

Hydra are freshwater polyps of the Cnidaria phylum with limited research done on their phylogeny and biogeography. While the majority of Hydra phylogenetic research has been conducted on only Northern Hemisphere samples, citizen scientists are an essential part of broadening the scope of understanding where Hydra live in the wild and how they are related to one another. Citizen scientists contacted via the website iNaturalist provided researchers at USD with Hydra samples. From there 3 hydra samples were sequenced and compiled in a phylogenetic tree, providing more information about Hydra phylogeny and biogeography. In addition, improvements to molecular protocols were …

Cultural Factors Influence Mental Health-Related Experiences And Behaviors Of Latinx Youth, Ehliyhan Eslava-Deanda

Research Month

Recent studies reveal that Latinx youth are more prone to mental health issues and are less inclined to seek professional help when compared to other ethnic-racial groups (Galvan & Gudiño, 2021; Varela & Hensley-Maloney, 2009). This thematic review covers themes that include self and public stigma, traditional cultural roles (i.e., marianismo, machismo, familismo), and cultural orientations (i.e., ethnic-racial socialization, acculturation/enculturation), all of which influence the mental health and mental-health-seeking behaviors of Latinx youth. Findings suggest that certain beliefs and attitudes prevalent in Latinx families, such as traditional gender roles, can prevent children and youths’ abilities to seek appropriate care for …

A Computational Analysis Of Gratian’S Decretum (C. 1140), Jake Bayon

Research Month

In the expanse of medieval history, amidst the crisis of the church and state, Gratian emerges as a pivotal yet often overlooked figure, renowned for his pioneering work in canon law. His seminal text, Concordia Discordantium Canonum (The Harmony of Discordant Canons), brought order to the cacophony of contradictory laws within the Catholic church that had accumulated over centuries. The discovery of the text’s first recension—an earlier edition that is approximately half of the size of its more widely known counterpart—has opened new avenues of inquiry. Our research delves into the evolution of Gratian's magnum opus, particularly exploring the topical …
