Assessment Of Multiple Constructs Of Social Integration For Older Adults Living In Nursing Homes, Skye N. Leedahl, Alicia Sellon, Rosemary K. Chapin

Human Development and Family Science Faculty Publications

A variety of terms and measures have been used in the literature to denote being socially integrated, and many studies of older adults focus on only social networks or social support and often only include those living in the community. The purpose of this study was to assess multiple constructs of social integration (i.e., social networks, social capital, social support, and social engagement) for older adults in nursing homes. Data were collected from 140 older adults at 30 nursing homes in Kansas. We interviewed older adults' in-person using a survey questionnaire, and used multilevel confirmatory factor analysis to analyze the …

Intergenerational service-learning in higher education positively affects older adults and students, but little is known about the effectiveness of interdisciplinary, reverse mentoring programs that use technology as the medium of bringing generations together. This study describes an intergenerational service-learning program that utilizes reverse mentoring within higher education, the "Engaging Generations Program," at a midsized public university in New England where students help older adults learn about technology, and students gain communication and teaching skills. In this article, we outline how the program was implemented, present quantitative data on participation outcomes for students and older adults and qualitative data from older …

Financing Knowledge, Risk Attitude And P2p Borrowing In China, Lu Han, Jing Jian Xiao, Zhi Su

Human Development and Family Science Faculty Publications

The advance of Internet technology has provided a convenient market platform for matching lending and borrowing parties, but many consumers still hesitate to use online borrowing. To better understand consumer behaviour in online borrowing, we use nationally representative survey data in China to explore factors affecting consumer use of one type of online borrowing, person to person (P2P) borrowing. Through empirical analyses, we find that financing knowledge and risk attitude are two key factors associated with P2P borrowing. Results show that financing knowledge is directly associated with P2P borrowing, while risk attitude through an instrument variable is associated with P2P …

Predicting Patterns Of Intimate Partner Violence Perpetration From Late Adolescence To Young Adulthood, Hans Saint-Eloi Cadely, Joe F. Pittman, Gregory S. Pettit, Jennifer E. Lansford, John E. Bates, Kenneth A. Dodge, Amy Holtzworth-Munroe Jan 2018

Predicting Patterns Of Intimate Partner Violence Perpetration From Late Adolescence To Young Adulthood, Hans Saint-Eloi Cadely, Joe F. Pittman, Gregory S. Pettit, Jennifer E. Lansford, John E. Bates, Kenneth A. Dodge, Amy Holtzworth-Munroe

Saint-Eloi Cadely et al. (2017) found longitudinal patterns for the perpetration of both psychological and physical intimate partner violence (IPV), including actively and minimally aggressive patterns. The current study builds on these findings by examining four theory-derived variables (interparental aggression, social-information processing (SIP) biases, relationship insecurities (preoccupied and fearful), and discontinuity in relationship partner over time) as predictors of membership within these patterns using multinomial logistic regression. The analysis sample consisted of 484 participants who were romantically involved at least once during the 8 waves of data collection from the ages of 18-25. In predicting psychological IPV, more SIP biases, …

Financial Education And Insurance Advice Seeking, Jing Jian Xiao, Nilton Porto Jan 2018

Financial Education And Insurance Advice Seeking, Jing Jian Xiao, Nilton Porto

Human Development and Family Science Faculty Publications

The purpose of this study is to examine the potential effects of consumer financial education on insurance advice seeking with a large and representative national data set in the U.S. Previous research has examined factors associated with insurance advice seeking. After controlling for these factors, financial education, which has not been examined in previous research, is positively associated with this behaviour. Specifically, high school and workplace financial education show positive associations with insurance advice seeking. Further analyses show that there are differences in insurance advice seeking between consumers with and without life insurance.

Mental Accounting And Behavioural Hierarchy: Understanding Consumer Budgeting Behaviour, Jing Jian Xiao, Barbara O'Neill Jan 2018

Mental Accounting And Behavioural Hierarchy: Understanding Consumer Budgeting Behaviour, Jing Jian Xiao, Barbara O'Neill

Human Development and Family Science Faculty Publications

Budgeting is an important step in consumer finance. Budgeting behaviour is considered a desirable financial behaviour to indicate consumer financial capability. However, systematic research on budgeting behaviour with a large scale national sample is limited. The purpose of this study was to address this research gap and examine characteristics of budgeting behaviour from the perspective of a behavioural hierarchy, which is related to mental accounting. The assumption holds that consumer financial behaviours may be performed in a hierarchical manner along with an increase in economic resources. Using data from the 2015 National Financial Capability Study, evidence suggests that budgeting behaviour …

Propensity To Plan, Financial Capability, And Financial Satisfaction, Jing Jian Xiao, Barbara O'Neill Jan 2018

Propensity To Plan, Financial Capability, And Financial Satisfaction, Jing Jian Xiao, Barbara O'Neill

Human Development and Family Science Faculty Publications

Propensity to plan is an indicator of financial capability that contributes to consumer financial well‐being. Previous research has shown that propensity to plan is positively related to objective financial well‐being but little research was found to examine its association with subjective financial well‐being. Using financial satisfaction to measure subjective financial well‐being, this study addressed this research gap and had three objectives: (1) to explore factors associated with propensity to plan, (2) to examine the association between propensity to plan and financial capability factors, and (3) to examine the association between propensity to plan and financial satisfaction. Using data from the …

Korean Pre-Service Teachers' Perception Of Parent-Teacher Partnership: The Effects Of Motivation And Teaching Beliefs, Hyunjin Kim, Soo Jung Lee

Human Development and Family Science Faculty Publications

This chapter examined early childhood pre-service teachers’ perceptions of the parent-teacher partnership, especially for the interaction effect between motivation and teaching beliefs on the parent-teacher partnership among Korean early childhood pre-service teachers. The participants for this study included 265 pre-service teachers in two different types of childhood teacher education programs (early childhood education and elementary education) in Seoul, Kyunggi, and Busan in Korea. The results from t-tests and ANOVA showed that pre-service teachers’ perceptions of the parent-teacher partnership were differentiated by student status in the teacher education program with discrete differences depending on subfactors. Constructivist teaching beliefs were the most …
