Mindfulness witnessed a substantial popularity surge in the past decade, especially as digitally self-administered interventions became available at relatively low costs. Yet, it is uncertain whether they effectively help reduce stress. In a preregistered (OSF https://doi.org/10.17605/OSF.IO/UF4JZ; retrospective registration at ClinicalTrials.gov NCT06308744) multi-site study (nsites = 37, nparticipants = 2,239, 70.4% women, Mage = 22.4, s.d.age = 10.1, all fluent English speakers), we experimentally tested whether four single, standalone mindfulness exercises effectively reduced stress, using Bayesian mixed-effects models. All exercises proved to be more efficacious than the active control. We observed a mean difference of 0.27 (d = −0.56; 95% confidence …

How Is International Orchid Trade Regulated, And How Effective Are Those Regulations?, Madeline Roubik May 2024

How Is International Orchid Trade Regulated, And How Effective Are Those Regulations?, Madeline Roubik

Mary Ann Bolton Undergraduate Research Award

When investigating the trafficking of wild species, animals are often considered before plants (Phelps et al. 2015). This is especially detrimental to members of the orchidaceae family, which are victims of an extensive illegal trade. It spans the entire globe but is especially concentrated in Southeastern Asia (Phelps et al. 2015). When regarding legislation, however, orchidaceae species are some of the most protected in the world. International legislation such as CITES restricts the movement of endangered orchidaceae across borders (Hinsley 2018). The 1992 Convention on Biodiversity (Lawson et al. 2019) also has policies regarding international orchid trade. National laws regulate …

Preventing Sexual Harassment In Higher Education: A Framework For Prevention Science Program Development, Cindy A. Crusto, Lisa M. Hooper, Ishita S. Arora

Faculty Publications

Sexual harassment is an intractable problem that harms the students, community, culture, and success of institutes of higher education (IHEs). The alarming prevalence of sexual harassment at IHEs highlights the urgent need for effective prevention programs. However, there are few empirically supported preventive interventions that effectively target the factors that most impact the determinants, trajectory, and short- and intermediate-term effects of sexual harassment. In this paper, we overview the problem of sexual harassment and propose an organizing framework to help IHEs develop effective interventions to prevent sexual harassment. Guided by prevention science, we propose a framework—modified from SAMHSA’s (2019) guidelines …

How Rural Identity, Self-Reliance, And Stoicism Relate To Attitudes Toward Mental Health Help-Seeking Among Iowans, Taylor Brown

INSPIRE Student Research and Engagement Conference

PROBLEM

  • Rural areas represent 20% of the U.S. population (United States Census Bureau, 2022)
  • Similar rates of mental illness among rural and urban people (Morales et al., 2020)
  • Higher suicide rates among rural people (Brunk, 2010)
  • Lower psychological help-seeking rates among rural individuals (Caldwell et al., 2004; Kirby et al., 2019)
  • Rural residents tend to wait longer and until symptoms become severe to seek help (Stewart et al., 2015)

Lingering Effects Of Redlining On Secondary Education In Waterloo, Iowa, Emily Brennom Apr 2024

Lingering Effects Of Redlining On Secondary Education In Waterloo, Iowa, Emily Brennom

INSPIRE Student Research and Engagement Conference

The Home Owners' Loan Corporation (HOLC) of the federal government implemented the racially discriminatory housing policy known as "redlining" in the 1930s, which still has an effect on Waterloo, Iowa's educational system to this day. The practice targeted neighborhoods considered to be undesirable due to their racial or ethnic makeup, regularly denying residents services or putting tight restrictions on investment, insurance, and mortgage lending. The color-coded maps that HOLC assessors used to identify high-risk zones - areas populated by ethnic minorities were frequently designated in red - are where the term "redlining" first appeared. These laws lead to differences in …

Women's Rights In Iran, Aubrie Saysirisanh, Asia Hemmer, Katelyn Braga, Bailey Hudson, Abigail Bonner Apr 2024

Women's Rights In Iran, Aubrie Saysirisanh, Asia Hemmer, Katelyn Braga, Bailey Hudson, Abigail Bonner

INSPIRE Student Research and Engagement Conference

Women in Iran are not allowed representation in government and do not have legal rights in many aspects. According to studies, Iranian women lack rights regarding family matters and are required to wear a hijab or face prison time. They have little protection from violence including capital and corporal punishments, which are still used on women who defy these policies in Iran. These rules and policies are actively put in place by religious views and power-starved individuals. This raises the question of what has to happen for a woman to be provided with the necessary rights that she deserves as …

World Hunger, Lindsey Schlotfeldt, Kayla Bolsinger, Carson Love, Kailyn O'Gara

INSPIRE Student Research and Engagement Conference

According to the World Food Program (2024), A total of 23.4 million people in The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) are projected to be acutely food insecure, and an estimated 2.8 million children are acutely malnourished. The implication of this is exposure to acute diseases, poverty, malnutrition, and even death. Poverty, climate change, inflation, war, and conflict are the foundation causes of world hunger, and all these factors plague the DRC. Nevertheless, countries such as Zambia have adopted the Action Against Hunger program to mitigate chronic malnutrition and other effects of hunger. This study assesses the implications of hunger …

Suspected Vs. Diagnosed Mental Illness, Race, And The Ngri Plea, Alexa Roudabush, Helen C. Harton

INSPIRE Student Research and Engagement Conference

This study investigated the effects of mental illness (suspected, diagnosed) and the defendant’s race (Black, White) on receiving the NGRI plea in a Second-Degree murder case. Participants were more likely to assign the NGRI plea to a Black defendant than a White defendant if the defendant had a diagnosed mental illness, but were more likely to assign a guilty plea to the Black defendant than the White when the diagnosis was only suspected.

Lost Voices: Examining Child Trafficking Across The United States And Haiti, Christi Boswood, Allison Arjes, Joryn Hanson, Kayla Mol, Josie Moreland, Allison Stewart

INSPIRE Student Research and Engagement Conference

It is estimated that 1.2 million children are trafficked each year, and two children are sold every minute. These children are exposed to some of the world’s most adverse experiences. Reports show that trafficking is the second most lucrative crime in the world. This study will examine the connection between trafficking across the United States and Haiti by exploring the types of child trafficking, why it occurs, and how traffickers can control and move children across borders. It is imperative that more people understand its global and local implications on children and find ways to mitigate the practice.

A Comparative Analysis Of Drug Use Policies: A Global Guide To Prevention And Treatment, Elliot Throndson, Lauren Hawker, Patience Kies, Logan Green

INSPIRE Student Research and Engagement Conference

In recent years, drug usage has increased on a global scale, and with this has come an array of responses from various countries suffering the effects. This study will compare and contrast the approaches of Norway, The Philippines, and the United States. The Norwegian approach focuses on harm reduction, preventative measures, and accessible treatment. The Philippines declared an all-out war on drugs, creating human rights violations and a lethal environment for those suffering from addiction. The United States varies by state in their responses, with many aiming to dismantle harmful federal policy from the 1970s “War On Drugs.” Through these …

Global Overconsumption And Its Effects On Climate Change, Alex Friedley, Caitlyn Conlee, Jason Rhinehart

INSPIRE Student Research and Engagement Conference

Global overconsumption is an issue that is affecting the masses and without change, there will be dire consequences for the environment and for future generations to come. This problem stems from the production of daily consumed resources such as food, clothing, and e-waste that are pumped out at drastic rates from different companies worldwide causing the increase in CO2 emission which results in global warming. These sources of waste end up in areas where it can be detrimental to human health. Countries like Denmark have a system in place to address this problem (The Climate Act). The Climate Act was …

Breaking The Patterns Of Homelessness, Jaylynn Easterly, Yaqueline Trinidad, Mya Snitker, Araely Hanson

INSPIRE Student Research and Engagement Conference

Homelessness is a global issue that affects people living in all kinds of different environments. The impacts of homelessness are relatively similar when it comes to developed and undeveloped countries. The uncertainty and stress of homelessness can lead to mental health problems including depression, anxiety and many others. When it comes to physical health, not having a stable living environment can make it more difficult to have access to basic needs such as clean water, safe shelter and nutritious foods. The lack of basic necessities often leads to malnutrition, exposure to harmful weather conditions and a higher sensitivity to diseases …
