A Gravity Investigation Of The Fayette Structural Zone And Surrounding Area, Northeast Iowa, Richard L. Kellogg, Christopher Meinen Jan 1993

A Gravity Investigation Of The Fayette Structural Zone And Surrounding Area, Northeast Iowa, Richard L. Kellogg, Christopher Meinen

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

A gravity survey was conducted over approximately 2600 square kilometers of northeast Iowa. The survey was undertaken to provide detailed gravity coverage at approximately one mile intervals and to investigate the sources of gravity anomalies in the study area. An additional objective was to verify with gravity data the presence of the Fayette Structural Zone, previously identified on the basis of magnetic linears. Four hundred and twenty-seven gravity stations were occupied and data from these stations combined with extant data from the Geological Survey Bureau of the Iowa Department of Natural Resources to produce the gravity interpretation. A Bouger gravity …

Twenty Years Ago In Istj: "Live" Geology, Mary Isidore Rohan

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

How old is the earth? Where did it come from? How was it made? Junior high students are determined to solve all life's mysteries, and therefore geology with its wealth of clues is a likely target for their curiosity. The earth sciences seem to hold an almost mystical fascination for the junior high age child possibly because the adolescent is beginning to realize he is part of the whole universe and not just of a family, and is using his powers of observation to see what this universe holds.

Some Views On The Archaeology Of The Driftless Area In Iowa, R. Clark Mallam Jan 1984

Some Views On The Archaeology Of The Driftless Area In Iowa, R. Clark Mallam

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The archaeology of the Driftless Area in Iowa encompasses a time frame extending from approximately 10,000 B.C. to Euroamerican contact. Researchers have defined a series of prehistoric adaptations for this period which can be conveniently grouped under two major modes of production: hunting/gathering and hunting/gathering-horticultural. By analyzing the evolution of these modes it may be possible to define prehistoric belief systems and the manner in which they functioned as significant components in the adaptation process. This combined scientific-humanistic approach may contribute toward a broader understanding of the prehistory of this region.

Nomenclature Of Some Pennsylvanian Upper Cherokee (Desmoinesian Series) Coals Of Iowa, Stephen A. Hall Jan 1969

Nomenclature Of Some Pennsylvanian Upper Cherokee (Desmoinesian Series) Coals Of Iowa, Stephen A. Hall

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The nomenclatural history of some Upper Cherokee coals of Iowa is reviewed, beginning with the 1870 geological survey. The Lacona, Panora, Wheeler, Marshall, and Lonsdale coals were named by St. John. The two more important coal beds, the Panora and Wheeler, are discussed in detail. The Panora, described in Guthrie County, was in 1927 renamed Whitebreast by A. L. Lugn for exposures in Lucas County within half a mile of St. John's type section of the Wheeler Coal. At the time of description both coals were measured at each type section in NE¼ sec. 33, T. 73 N., R. 22 …

Ground Water Geology Of The U.S. Gypsum Company, Sperry Mine, Lyle V. A. Sendlein Jan 1966

Ground Water Geology Of The U.S. Gypsum Company, Sperry Mine, Lyle V. A. Sendlein

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The geology relating to the U. S. Gypsum Company Sperry Mine, Des Moines County, Iowa, is discussed. Maps of the bedrock configuration, structure, and bedrock geology are presented and reviewed in light of the ground water condition existing in the area. Criteria which could cause mine flooding are investigated and evaluated.

Determining The Force Of Friction In A Simple Machine, Joseph J. Snoble

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Too often a science unit on simple machines consists of a discussion of ideal mechanical advantage (I.M.A.) and actual mechanical advantage (A.M.A.) in pulley systems and inclined planes, without really emphasizing the role of friction.

Problems Of Paleontological Preservation In Iowa, W. D. Frankforter Jan 1961

Problems Of Paleontological Preservation In Iowa, W. D. Frankforter

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A brief review of vertebrate paleontological work in Iowa reveals an early utilization of fossils in Pleistocene studies followed by a lapse in collecting and research until revived during the past decade. Legal measures enacted to protect paleontological materials have, in the opinion of many paleontologists, resulted in numerous federal and state regulations which are unrealistic and a hindrance to scientific endeavor. Efforts to modify or remove federal rules and regulations governing fossils are discussed. Legal restrictions do not constitute the primary problems of paleontological conservation in many states, including Iowa. Instead, the problems are those of (1) public education …

An Aftonian Plant Locality In Lee County, Iowa, L. R. Wilson Jan 1952

An Aftonian Plant Locality In Lee County, Iowa, L. R. Wilson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Organic remains in glacial drifts and interglacial deposits are relatively abundant in Iowa and serve as valuable aids for the resolution of certain Pleistocene problems. The existence of fossils in the glacial deposits was early recognized and became one of the criteria for the separation of drift sheets (McGee, 1878). In 1895 T. C. Chamberlain noted the presence of peat separating two tills in the Afton Junction-Thayer region of Union County, Iowa. The name Aftonian was applied in connection with these interglacial deposits and has become the established designation of the oldest recognized interglacial stage in North America.

Recent Developments In The Wisconsin-Illinois-Iowa Lead-Zinc District, Allen F. Agnew, Allen V. Heyl Jr. Jan 1946

Recent Developments In The Wisconsin-Illinois-Iowa Lead-Zinc District, Allen F. Agnew, Allen V. Heyl Jr.

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

One of the oldest mining districts in the United States, and one from which lead and zinc ores were mined in substantial quantity during the last five years or so is situated in the upper area of drainage of the Mississippi River. The district lies in the geologic province that has been known for several decades as the "Driftless Area," and is characterized by gently-rolling topography, which extends from the nearly-level uplands to the well-dissected areas bordering the major rivers. The Mississippi on the west, the Wisconsin River on the north, and the Rock River on the east virtually bound …

The Address Of The President - Some Problems In Conservation, Samuel Walker Beyer Jan 1919

The Address Of The President - Some Problems In Conservation, Samuel Walker Beyer

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The credit for directing the attention of the public to the almost universal waste of the Nation's resources must be accorded to the late President Theodore Roosevelt. The great President was not only the originator of the movement but continued to be its most aggressive and enthusiastic apostle and promoter. The idea first found definite expression in his address before the Society of American Foresters, March 26, 1903, in which he emphasized the necessity of forest preservation and pointed out the close relationship between the forests and stream flow.

Charter Members Of The Iowa Academy Of Science, L. H. Parmmel

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Two charter members of the Academy, Dr. Samuel Calvin and Professor J. E. Todd, were primarily geologists, both, however, had such good training in the old natural history courses given in our colleges forty and fifty years ago, that they became all-round naturalists. In the early days of teaching science in Iowa, when they did their pioneer work, they had the whole range of scientific instruction along the lines of natural history and natural science. In late years Dr. Calvin was primarily a geologist, never, however, losing interest in natural history. Several biographical sketches of the late Dr. Calvin have …
