Exploring Rural And Non-Rural Disparities In Interpersonal Violence And Help Seeking Barriers Among North Dakota Women, Tahmid Hassan Jeeshan, Ashley K. Fansher Sep 2026

Exploring Rural And Non-Rural Disparities In Interpersonal Violence And Help Seeking Barriers Among North Dakota Women, Tahmid Hassan Jeeshan, Ashley K. Fansher

Criminal Justice Posters and Presentations

Interpersonal violence extends beyond physical assault to include psychological and/or emotional abuse that can produce substantial physical and mental health consequences. Unfortunately, rates of violence have not been directly studied among residents of North Dakota. In this study, we compare victimization patterns, treatment seeking behaviors, and barriers to treatment among North Dakotan women. We anticipate that rural victims will report more severe or chronic victimization yet face reduced access to and use of healthcare and victim services. By jointly considering violence type, rural versus non-rural status, and treatment seeking, this project highlights differences between rural and non-rural residents and identifies …

Information Literacy Through Open Pedagogy: What’S The Role Of Ai Tools?, Virginia Clinton-Lisell Aug 2026

Information Literacy Through Open Pedagogy: What’S The Role Of Ai Tools?, Virginia Clinton-Lisell

Education, Health & Behavior Studies Faculty Publications

Student engagement in developing open educational resources (OER; openly licensed materials without fees to access) may be critically important for sustainable higher education and for developing important skills. There has been substantial debate about the use of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) for the sustainability of OER, but little empirical inquiry. In this quasi-experimental study in the United States, two sections of college students (N = 113) collaborated with their instructor to improve the sources cited in an OER textbook. In one section, students only used traditional library databases to find suitable sources (traditional; n = 55). In another section, students …

The Impact Of Point Of Care Hepatitis C Virus Rna Testing On Diagnosis, Treatment Initiation, And Linkage To Care In Marginalized Populations, Maria Simpson Aug 2026

The Impact Of Point Of Care Hepatitis C Virus Rna Testing On Diagnosis, Treatment Initiation, And Linkage To Care In Marginalized Populations, Maria Simpson

Medical Laboratory Science Independent Study Projects

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) remains a major public health concern, particularly among marginalized and high-risk populations who experience barriers to timely diagnosis, treatment initiation, and linkage to care. Traditional laboratory-based HCV testing often requires multistep workflows and follow-up visits, contributing to delayed confirmation of active infection and loss to care. This literature review examines how point-of-care HCV ribonucleic acid (RNA) testing affects time to diagnosis, treatment initiation, and linkage to care compared with standard laboratory-based testing. Evidence from systematic reviews, community-based trials, correctional settings, supervised consumption sites, diagnostic performance studies, and cost-effectiveness analyses indicates that point-of-care RNA testing shortens turnaround …

Double-Scoring: Reliable Extraction Of Strong Lottery Tickets, Bryce Christopherson, Jack Baretz, Darian Colgrove, Salah Dandan Jul 2026

Double-Scoring: Reliable Extraction Of Strong Lottery Tickets, Bryce Christopherson, Jack Baretz, Darian Colgrove, Salah Dandan

Mathematics Faculty Publications

The lottery ticket hypothesis proposes that large random neural networks contain sparse subnetworks that can match the performance of dense models after compara- ble training. A stronger version asserts that sufficiently overparameterized random networks contain subnetworks that are already accurate before any weight training. Existing theory establishes that such strong lottery tickets exist, but reliable ex- traction remains difficult. We revisit edge-popup, a frozen-weight score-training method for extracting strong tickets, and identify layerwise sparsity selection as a central bottleneck. We introduce double-scoring, an augmented score-space parameterization that replaces a layerwise sparsity search with optimization over enlarged score tensors. We prove …

Facilitating Conditions And Gender Gaps: Predicting Intention To Adopt Digital Education Resources Among Teachers, Bijaya Shrestha, Virginia Clinton-Lisell

Education, Health & Behavior Studies Student Publications

This study examined factors shaping school teachers’ intention to adopt Digital Educational Resources (DER) in Kathmandu Valley, Nepal, based on the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT). Factors included were performance expectancy, effort expectancy, social influence, facilitating conditions, and behavioural intention. Fifty-six (56) teachers completed an online survey measuring those factors. Among all the factors, facilitating conditions were the marginally significant positive predictor of behavioural intention to adopt DER. Male teachers reported marginally higher behavioural intention (p =.05) to adopt DER compared to female teachers. However, gender was not a significant moderator in relationship between behavioural intention …

Developing And Sustaining Indigenous Nursing Leadership: The Heal Southwest Leadership Cohort, Cristina Rivera Carpenter, Adriann Begay Jul 2026

Developing And Sustaining Indigenous Nursing Leadership: The Heal Southwest Leadership Cohort, Cristina Rivera Carpenter, Adriann Begay

Indigenous Health Posters and Presentations

While Indigenous Peoples represent 2.9% of the total United States (US) population (Office of Minority Health, 2025), only 0.4% of the 4.7 million Registered Nurses (RN) in the US are Indigenous (AACN, 2024). This disparity in nursing representation impacts healthcare delivery and access in Indigenous communities. Healthcare services in Indigenous communities, such as those provided through Indian Health Services (IHS) and 638 facilities, often face high vacancies and high turnover rates (Kruse 2022). There are gaps in mentorship, professional development, community of practice, and available curriculum to practicing Indigenous Nurses who serve their communities. These gaps must be addressed to …

Intergenerational trauma in Indigenous communities dates to the early fifteenth century with the beginning of European colonization and continues to affect Indigenous communities through the present day. This project specifically examines the manifestations of intergenerational trauma in the Lakota community throughout North Dakota stemming from the off-reservation boarding school era. This research relied on a collection of oral histories gathered between 2016 and 2020 of enrolled members of the Lakota community who shared their personal experiences of coping with intergenerational trauma, and that of their close family and friends. This research establishes interdisciplinary connections among the fields of history, psychology, …

The aim of the project was to determine if the delivery method of coaching impacts outcomes, thus informing …

Improving Nurse Burnout With Wellness Activities During Break Times, Alyson Sigvertsen Jun 2026

Improving Nurse Burnout With Wellness Activities During Break Times, Alyson Sigvertsen

Nursing Capstones

Nursing burnout continues to be a critical concern in healthcare worldwide. Due to a lack of physical, emotional, and mental breaks, burnout has a high prevalence in the nursing profession. Burnout leads to reduced patient quality of care, higher staff workload, increased risk of errors, delay in care, and reduced job dissatisfaction. Nursing staff who do not take their scheduled breaks are more at risk for burnout because of the strong correlation between burnout and lack of rest (Stutting, 2023). For nurses to take their scheduled breaks is a common practice; however, nurses report continued stress as their break includes …

From Awareness To Action: Developing Protocols For Tardive Dyskinesia Aims Screening Among Mental Health Clinicians, Annette Pratt Jun 2026

From Awareness To Action: Developing Protocols For Tardive Dyskinesia Aims Screening Among Mental Health Clinicians, Annette Pratt

Nursing Capstones

Tardive dyskinesia (TD) is an often-irreversible movement disorder linked to prolonged antipsychotic treatment. It is under-recognized in mental health settings due to inconsistent or absent screening. Early identification with validated tools such as the Abnormal Involuntary Movement Scale (AIMS) is advised but not routinely performed, resulting in delayed diagnosis and poor management. The Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) project aims to improve TD detection by implementing a standardized AIMS screening protocol using a quasi-experimental, pre- and post-test design. Project components include prescriber education and demonstration using the AIMS tool. Participants are mental health prescribers managing antipsychotic medications. Expected outcomes include …

Media Depictions Of Indigenous Peoples And The Battle Of Sugar Point, 1898, Hunter Eickhoff May 2026

Media Depictions Of Indigenous Peoples And The Battle Of Sugar Point, 1898, Hunter Eickhoff

Arts & Sciences Undergraduate Showcase

The Battle of Sugar Point generated a media frenzy that seemed greatly disproportionate for a battle of relatively little consequence. Newspapers ranging from tiny local papers to major nationally syndicated publications published headlines proclaiming that northern Minnesota was threatened by an all-out uprising of the Ojibwe, with large-scale violence sure to follow. Of course, no such uprising occurred. If one had, perhaps the Battle of Sugar Point would not exist in the relative obscurity that it does today. Why, then, was the press willing to stake such outlandish claims on next-to-no concrete evidence? Through my research, I argue that these …
