Resistance Through Policy: Documenting Lgbtq+ Advocacy In Public Education, Rhys Mitchell Fryar Dec 2025

Resistance Through Policy: Documenting Lgbtq+ Advocacy In Public Education, Rhys Mitchell Fryar

Theses and Dissertations

This research examines how educational policies related to LGBTQ+ students are constructed, interpreted, and implemented across federal, state, and district-levels. It asks whether institutional intent reflects authentic commitment to equity or functions as symbolic compliance in politically contested environments. Using Portland Public Schools (PPS) as a case study, the analysis situates the district within Oregon’s affirming policy landscape and the Trump administration’s restrictive federal mandates. PPS has adopted policies, such as Administrative Directive 4.30.061 AD (2023b) and the Gender Identity Support Guide (2023a), to support queer and gender-expansive students; however, it faces a federal investigation (U.S. Department of Education, 2025b, …

Hillslope Degradation: Coarse Sands May Move Faster But Fines Dominate Flux, Robert Chance Jan 2025

Hillslope Degradation: Coarse Sands May Move Faster But Fines Dominate Flux, Robert Chance

Theses and Dissertations

Hillslopes are one of the most pervasive landforms on Earth yet the details of the processes that drive their evolution are not completely understood. Excluding boulders, the majority of mass and volume in soil-mantled hillslopes is composed of sand-sized and finer grains. Understanding the transport rates and governing transport mechanisms of these grains is therefore key to advancing our knowledge of hillslope evolution. This research investigates sand-sized sediment transport through field experiments at 20 sites tracking surface sediment motion and 11 sites measuring depth-dependent transport. These empirical results are compared against outputs from a novel grain-based hillslope diffusion simulation (GBHDS), which …

Population Genetics Of Deer In The Northern Great Plains, Usa, Sarah Elizabeth Daman Dec 2024

Population Genetics Of Deer In The Northern Great Plains, Usa, Sarah Elizabeth Daman

Theses and Dissertations

Deer are currently under threat of chronic wasting disease (CWD) throughout North America. With CWD distribution increasing globally, understanding the spread of the disease is paramount for the effective management and conservation of deer populations. Conservation genomics has been shown as an effective method to study the behavior and movement of individuals on the landscape at a broad spatial scale. This approach allows for a multi-state evaluation of habitat and landscape features that may influence the dispersals and subsequent gene flow between populations. This study was designed to assess the genetic population structuring of deer within North Dakota and surrounding …

Ms. Pearl Irma Young: "Raising Hell" For Women In Stem Fields And Women At Nasa, 1914 - 1968, Caitlin Milera

Theses and Dissertations

Women are underrepresented in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields and at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). Women’s underrepresentation in these fields is largely due to the countless barriers they face at K-12 levels, in higher education environments, and in the workforce. This historical analysis explored the academic and professional journey of a woman who persisted through these systemic and structural barriers, Ms. Pearl Irma Young.Through this research, I examined Ms. Young’s experiences in higher education, at the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA), and at NASA. To do so required robust data collection of archival resources, …

The History Of Queer Resistance And Student Activism At The University Of North Dakota, Jeff Maliskey Jan 2022

The History Of Queer Resistance And Student Activism At The University Of North Dakota, Jeff Maliskey

Theses and Dissertations

This study explores the queer history of the University of North Dakota from 1980 to present day and demonstrates how LGBTQ+ student activism lead to the development of LGBTQ+ programs and services at the University. Situated in a socially and politically conservative state, the University of North Dakota provides an understanding of how LGBTQ+ students organized in the 1980s out of necessity to combat social opposition and discriminatory state legislation. LGBTQ+ students were burdened with the responsibility to create their own support services and resources as there is no historical evidence of the university administration taking steps to improve the …

Lunar Daytime: Behavioral Experiments In A Space Analog Living And Working Environment, Marc M/ Cohen, Donald Barker, Suzanna Bianco, Sheryl Bishop, Pablo De Leon, Ron Gentile, Sandra Haeuplik-Meusburger, James A. Wise

Space Studies Faculty Publications

The Lunar Daytime concept addresses the challenge to behavioral scientists and architectural researchers in conducting research in space habitats or habitat analogs to produce scientifically valid results. Historically, researchers were limited to largely qualitative surveys. Instead, the Lunar Daytime (LDT) team will demonstrate the efficacy of a modifiable environmental habitat analog laboratory capable of producing empirical, measurable, and quantitative data sets. To measure effects on crew performance and crew behavioral responses as a dependent variable, researchers must be able to make and control changes in the physical living and working environment as an independent variable. Lunar Daytime refers to modeling …

Treatment Option Decision Making For Low-Grade Prostate Cancer, Janene Caldwell Witherite May 2020

Treatment Option Decision Making For Low-Grade Prostate Cancer, Janene Caldwell Witherite

Physician Assistant Scholarly Project Papers

Prostate cancer (PCa) is the second most common cancer, behind skin cancer, among men, in the United States (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2019.). PCa is defined as low-grade or low risk if the neoplasm grows slowly or not at all. According to the Institute for Quality and Efficiency in Health Care, (2020), to make the conclusion that a PCa is low-grade, several tests are performed including a prostate specific antigen (PSA) level, a Gleason score, and a TNM score, which refers to tumor size, lymph node involvement, and metastasis outside the prostate. Low-grade PCa is further defined …

Understanding Well-Being Among Black Female Student Activists Attending Predominantly White Institutions: A Narrative Inquiry Approach, Stephen Grey Jan 2020

Understanding Well-Being Among Black Female Student Activists Attending Predominantly White Institutions: A Narrative Inquiry Approach, Stephen Grey

Theses and Dissertations

As engagement in activism continues to increase on campus and nationally, a paucity of research exists on the experiences of Black student activists attending PWI and their well-being. Narrative inquiry was utilized in this study to better understand the lived experiences of two Black student activists. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with both participants to gain in-depth narratives of their experiences engaging in activism on PWIs. A narrative thematic approach was used to analyze the results. The findings suggested that the Black student participants experienced benefits (increased sense of belonging and racial cohesion) and consequences (activist burnout and decreased academic performance) …

Reading The Landscape In Antler, North Dakota: Repeat Photography In An Atrophying Northern Plains Town, William A. Wetherholt, Gregory S. Vandeberg

Geography & Geographic Information Science Faculty Publications

This study presents repeat photography as an effective method to construct a narrative of change for a cultural landscape. The technique of repeat photography is the process of revisiting the vantage point of a historic photograph and capturing a contemporary image. This chapter focuses on the town of Antler, North Dakota, which has lost more than 85% of its population in the last 50 years (the 2016 estimated population was 25). Repeat photography with eleven historic photographs in Antler began to uncover a story of abandonment and change over the last century. It is this telling of a story through …

Tactical Implementation Of Strategic Guidance During The American Revolutionary War: Pedagogical Application For Classroom Use, Ryan Menath

Theses and Dissertations

The United States Air Force Academy is a specialized institution of higher learning dedicated to producing military officers in the U.S. Air Force. Specialized graduation requirements, like a required Military History course, present the opportunity for the implementation of unique pedagogical methodologies. Further, as a technologically forward-looking branch of service designed to control air, space, and cyberspace in a contested environment, the Air Force places a premium on twenty- and twenty-first century military history. Unfortunately, pre-airpower American military history gets overshadowed compared to later conflicts to the point where cadets attending the Air Force Academy get relatively little exposure to …

American Indian Biculturalism Inventory - Pueblo, Royleen J. Ross Jan 2018

American Indian Biculturalism Inventory - Pueblo, Royleen J. Ross

Theses and Dissertations

A time in American history existed when Native Americans were not allowed to express, much less retain their traditions, culture, language, and livelihood. Today, Natives are thriving in various fields at many different professional levels and have not only mastered majority culture’s ways, but have integrated them, on their own terms, into their lives. Warfare was declared upon Native Americans in the educational arena beginning in the late 1800’s, resulting in many indigenous individuals not only meeting the educational challenge posed to them, but excelled beyond expectation. Thus, in contemporary society, many Native Americans have retained their traditional ways and …

Tone In Acatlán Mixtec Nouns, Esteban I. Méndez-Hord Dec 2017

Tone In Acatlán Mixtec Nouns, Esteban I. Méndez-Hord

Theses and Dissertations

Varieties of Mixtec (an Oto-Manguean language group spoken in southern Mexico) have often been analyzed as having a three-way tonal distinction: Low, Mid and High. I present evidence from original research on simple, alienable nouns, that only two lexical tones, /H/ (corresponding to the traditional Mid tone) and /L/, where some H tones are floating, are needed to describe noun roots in Acatlán Mixtec. In essence, the extra-H tone (corresponding to the traditional Hi tone) only occurs in derived environments, which involve the interaction of tones from two or more morphemes. The bulk of the analysis uses H and L …

The Influence Of Rural Primary Care Providers Level Of Stigma On Recognition Of Suicidal Ideation In Patients, Megan Obert Jan 2017

The Influence Of Rural Primary Care Providers Level Of Stigma On Recognition Of Suicidal Ideation In Patients, Megan Obert

Theses and Dissertations

Although there has been an abundance of research in the last thirty years about primary care providers (PCPs) last contact with patients before they completed suicide, little is known about what may impede a PCPs ability to identify suicidal ideation in patients. The current study investigated implicit and explicit bias toward mental illness compared to physical illness among PCPs and students and how this may affect clinical decision making and identification of suicidal ideation in patients. The participants completed an online survey which assessed implicit stigma, explicit stigma, and clinical decision making in regard to a vignette that depicted a …

Assessment Of Wrf Simulated Precipitation By Meteorological Regimes, Brooke Anne Hagenhoff Jan 2017

Assessment Of Wrf Simulated Precipitation By Meteorological Regimes, Brooke Anne Hagenhoff

Theses and Dissertations

This study evaluated warm-season precipitation events in a multi-year (2007-2014) database of Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) simulations over the Northern Plains and Southern Great Plains. These WRF simulations were run daily in support of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Hazardous Weather Testbed (HWT) by the National Severe Storms Laboratory (NSSL) for operational forecasts.

Evaluating model skill by synoptic pattern allows for an understanding of how model performance varies with particular atmospheric states and will aid forecasters with pattern recognition. To conduct this analysis, a competitive neural network known as the Self-Organizing Map (SOM) was used. SOMs allow …

Black Power In A "Lily-White" School: The Black Campus Movement At Concordia College In Moorhead, Minnesota, Daniel D. Cooley

Theses and Dissertations

Between the mid-1950s and through the 1970s, higher educational institutions throughout the United States underwent reforms in the name of what they termed “integration.” For the colleges and universities in the upper Midwest, these reforms included minority student recruitment and the creation of programs oriented towards diversity. Over time, a number of minority students began to act and react to the actions and attitudes of the various administrations, the campuses, and the community, resulting in a demonstration directly connected to the national phenomenon of “The Black Campus Movement,” (BCM) itself a submovement of the larger United States’ Black Power Movement …

Tamworth Conservatism And The Repeal Of The Corn Laws: The Foundation Of Modern Conservative Political Discourse, Jonathan James Hedeen Jan 2015

Tamworth Conservatism And The Repeal Of The Corn Laws: The Foundation Of Modern Conservative Political Discourse, Jonathan James Hedeen

Theses and Dissertations

In the early morning hours of May 16th, 1846 Parliament gathered for the final reading to repeal the Corn Laws. While the Corn Laws had been a highly contested topic within Britain for over two decades, it was at this juncture that the Conservative party of Sir Robert Peel fractured. As this study shall demonstrate, the Corn Law crisis of 1846 did not destroy Peel’s version of Conservativism as has often been argued, but rather put it into a state of suspended animation. The division of the party only twelve years after its formation has long been a topic of …

Theses and Dissertations

Between the World Wars, as France refined its colonial structure and control over

Senegal, allowing international missionary networks to develop their own concepts of the

mission civilisatrice. Utilizing the concepts of tutelage and moral education, missionaries

in the International Missionary Council (IMC) defined their role in the French empire as

imperative to the development of African peoples. As self-proclaimed thwarters of the

degradation of the French secular state in Senegal, the IMC used concepts of tutelage and

moral education within the debates surrounding education defined the place of

missionaries within French colonialism in interwar Senegal. Through letters,

publications, and negotiations …

It also revealed that with commitment on the part of principals and teachers, and principals distributing leadership, PLCs were very effective in enhancing the knowledge and instructional strategies of teachers, and improving …

Grade Level Retention: A Comparative Study Of Beliefs And Practices In North Dakota And Surrey, Kim Englund Jan 2014

Grade Level Retention: A Comparative Study Of Beliefs And Practices In North Dakota And Surrey, Kim Englund

Theses and Dissertations

Many regions of the United States retain students who are not performing at grade level, yet a large body of research shows the ineffectiveness of having students repeat an academic year. The United Kingdom practices social promotion rather than retention. This comparative study sought to better understand the practices in these two countries and the research surrounding retention. First, it compared the interventions before and alternatives to retention used by both a North Dakota school district in the United States and two schools in Surrey, England. Second, it outlined a plan for teachers, parents, school administrators, and school policy makers …

The Collision Of Romanticism And Modernism In Post-World War Ii American Cinema: A Theoretical Defense Of Intellectual History In The Undergraduate Classroom, Daniel Hunter Ferris Jan 2013

The Collision Of Romanticism And Modernism In Post-World War Ii American Cinema: A Theoretical Defense Of Intellectual History In The Undergraduate Classroom, Daniel Hunter Ferris

Theses and Dissertations

The post-World War II era in the United States, which ran from 1945 to 1970, has long been divided into two distinct periods; the late 1940s and 1950s and the 1960s. Out of this separation has come a view of the late 1940s and 1950s as a time dominated by a conservative conformist culture that did little to rival pre-war norms. On the other hand, the 1960s have come to be seen as a decade that witnessed true social revolution and thus should be considered responsible for shaping the social and cultural landscape of late twentieth-century America. While these views …

Elizabeth I And The Policy Of Marriage: The Anjou Match, 1572-1582, Aryn Elizabeth Bell

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis will explore how Queen Elizabeth I of England's use of interdynastic marriage negotiations as an essential component to the successful implementation of her foreign policy objectives. Many historians continue to debate whether a distinct foreign policy actually existed from the onset of Elizabeth's reign. While some contend that the queen had no policy in place, I suggest, that while it was not an active, aggressive policy, it did, in fact, exist. So the question becomes not whether she had a policy but how it was implemented. Using her unique role as an unwed female monarch, Elizabeth understood the …
