Lessons From Tanzania’S Ujamaa For Smart Settlements In Nepal: Social Justice And Economic Development, Keshav Bhattarai, Ambika P. Adhikari

Himalayan Research Papers Archive

Nepal’s constitutional commitment to a “socialism-oriented” state places social justice, equitable access to resources and housing, and protection of marginalized populations at the center of national development discourse. However, persistent landlessness, informal settlements, unemployment, youth outmigration, and unequal access to infrastructure reveal a significant gap between constitutional aspirations and socioeconomic realities.

This article examines lessons Nepal can draw from Tanzania’s experience with Ujamaa, the African socialist development model initiated by President Nyerere in 1967. Using comparative policy analysis, published research, official documents, and exploratory field observations from selected Tanzanian locations, including the capital and villages in the Iringa Region, the …

Essential Emergency And Critical Care: A Priority For Health Systems Globally, Dabota Yvonne Buowari, Christian Owoo, Lalit Gupta, Carl Otto Shell, Tim Baker, Eecc Network Group

Pathology Research and Scholarship

Critical illness is a state of ill health with vital organ dysfunction, a high risk of imminent death if care is not provided, and the potential for reversibility. An estimated 45 million adults become critically ill each year. While some are treated in emergency departments or intensive care units, most are cared for in general hospital wards. We outline a priority for health systems globally: the first-tier care that all critically ill patients should receive in all parts of all hospitals: Essential Emergency and Critical Care. We describe its relation to other specialties and care and opportunities for implementation.

Introduction: The United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), through U.S. President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), supports a third of all people receiving HIV care globally. CDC works with local partners to improve methods to find, treat, and prevent HIV and tuberculosis. However, a shortage of trained medical professionals has impeded efforts to control the HIV epidemic in Sub-Saharan Africa and Asia. The Project Extension for Community Healthcare Outcomes (ECHOTM) model expands capacity to manage complex diseases, share knowledge, disseminate best practices, and build communities of practice. This manuscript describes a practical protocol for …

Humanitarian Law In Action Within Africa, Jennifer Moore Mar 2012

Humanitarian Law In Action Within Africa, Jennifer Moore

Faculty Book Display Case

In Humanitarian Law in Action within Africa, Jennifer Moore studies the role and application of humanitarian law by focusing on African countries that are emerging from civil wars. Moore offers an overview of international law, including its essential vocabulary, and describes four particular subfields of international law: international humanitarian law, international human rights law, international criminal law, and international refugee law. After setting forth this overview, Moore considers practical mechanisms to implement international humanitarian law, focusing specifically on the experiences of Uganda, Sierra Leone, and Burundi. Through the case studies of these countries, Moore describes transitional justice's fundamental components: …

I. The Synthesis And Coordination Chemistry Of Novel 6Π-Electron Ligands. Ii. Improvement Of Student Writing Skills In Chemistry Lab Reports Through The Use Of Calibrated Peer Review, Wilson Ngambeki William

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

ABSTRACT I

The goal of this study was to synthesize and characterize a set of coordination complexes containing 6π-cationic ligands. These compounds could be extremely useful as catalysts for the polymerization of olefins that are widely used in the synthetic polymer industry. The original strategy was to synthesize the 6π-cationic ligands using (Ph2P)3CH (1) and (Me2P)3CH (10) as precursors; however, both precursors 1 and 10 were found to be highly reactive leading to the fragmentation products (Ph2P)2CH2 and (Me2P)2CH2 respectively. In trying …

Quantitative Structure-Property Relationships For Predicting Chlorine Demand And Disinfection Byproducts Formation In Drinking Water, Gebhard Balthazar Luilo Jul 2011

Quantitative Structure-Property Relationships For Predicting Chlorine Demand And Disinfection Byproducts Formation In Drinking Water, Gebhard Balthazar Luilo

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

Models are important tools for designing or redesigning water treatment processes and technologies to minimize disinfection byproducts (DBPs) formation without compromising disinfection efficiency. Empirical models, which are the most common, are based on bulk water quality parameters that vary with time and space. These parameters may not always have linear relationships with chlorine demand and DBPs formation which make structure-based models more attractive to study. In this dissertation, Quantitative Structure-Property Relationship (QSPR) models which make use of structural properties of individual molecules were developed using experimental data obtained from the literature. The amounts are reported in moles of chlorine (HOCl) …

Spectroscopic And Electronic Structure Studies Of Bis-Metallodithiolenes, Regina Peter Mtei

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

Dimethylsulfoxide reductase (DMSOR) enzyme family members catalyze oxygen atom transfer to or from organic or inorganic substrate and play important roles in the global cycles of sulfur and nitrogen, as well as the detoxification of arsenite. This enzyme has recently been subject of investigation due to its catalytic nature of oxygen atom transfer. This work reports on the electronic structure and reactivity properties of dimethylsulfoxide reductase enzyme studied using spectroscopic and computational methods. The spectroscopic methods included electronic absorption (EA), electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) and resonance Raman rRaman). Here, we report full characterization of the DMSOR …

Spectroscopic And Electronic Structure Studies Of Metalloenzyme Active Sites, Joseph Sempombe Jul 2011

Spectroscopic And Electronic Structure Studies Of Metalloenzyme Active Sites, Joseph Sempombe

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

This work reports on the electronic and geometric structural studies of xanthine oxidoreductase (XO), S-ribosylhomocysteinase (LuxS) and inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) active sites resulting from the joint applications of electronic absorption, electron paramagnetic resonance and magnetic circular dichroism spectroscopic methods. XO catalyzes formal oxygen atom insertion into a substrate C-H bond, but differs from monooxygenase enzymes in that the inserted oxygen atom derives from metal activated water and reducing equivalents are generated rather than consumed. Studies on aldehyde inhibited' XO (a paramagnetic form observed during XO catalysis), analyzed in terms of the relationships between the g-, 95,97Mo hyperfine, …

Studies On Group 10 Pincer Carbene Metal Complexes, Agnes Mrutu Feb 2011

Studies On Group 10 Pincer Carbene Metal Complexes, Agnes Mrutu

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

Selective oxidation chemistry is a topic of intense interest worldwide, in particular when using molecular oxygen (O2) directly as the oxidizing species. The primary reason for using O2 rather than other oxidants is to take advantage of the inexpensive nature of oxygen; however, the radical ground state of O2 leads to non-selective reactions with organic substrates. As such, basic knowledge and understanding involving the fundamental reactions of O2 with organometallic species will be required in order to overcome this lack of selectivity. The work presented in this dissertation has two main research goals to help …

Synthesis And Coordination Chemistry Of New Oxazoline And Benzoxazole Based Ligands With Lanthanides, Edicome Cornel Shirima Jul 2009

Synthesis And Coordination Chemistry Of New Oxazoline And Benzoxazole Based Ligands With Lanthanides, Edicome Cornel Shirima

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

In Chapter 1, a brief literature review on the chemistry of lanthanides (Ln) and actinides (An) is described. In addition, the coordination chemistry of lanthanides/actinides with various ligands comprised of organic backbones has also been described. In Chapters 2 and 3 the syntheses of oxazoline and benzoxazole ligands is described. Both ligands contain a hard donor group (P=O) and the nitrogen (N) atom from the heterocycle as a relatively softer donor atom. In Chapter 2 the oxazoline ligand was synthesized in two steps reaction that involves substitution with Ph2P group and oxidation of the phosphine into P=O by …

This Article suggests that our analysis of U.S. immigration policy should also be informed by a broader consideration of the experiences of immigrants and refugees in other parts of the world, including those who will never come to the United States. As we examine the moral, legal, and pragmatic imperatives behind the evolution of U.S. immigration policy, we should bear in mind the historical, political, economic, and cultural realities facing developing countries that host refugees from within their own regions. For some observers, such a global perspective might support calls for greater receptivity to immigrants in the United States. For …

Universal Jurisdiction And The Concept Of A Fair Trial Prosecutor V. Fulgence Niyonteze: A Swiss Military Tribunal Case Study, Joshua E. Kastenberg

Faculty Scholarship

It is the overall goal of this article to assess and evaluate concepts of universal jurisdiction and the interrelated right to a fair trial within the capsule of Prosecutor v. Niyonteze. This article analyzes the Niyonteze trial both within a framework of comparative law and against contemporary international law theories of universal jurisdiction and fair trial standards. In this article the term "due process" is subsumed into the larger concept of a fair trial. Likewise, a specific theory of universal jurisdiction is adopted. While universal jurisdiction and the right to a fair trial are often seen as exclusive areas, this …
