Mountain Development In Nepal: Settlements, Infrastructure, And Economic Transformation, Keshav Bhattarai, Ambika P. Adhikari Aug 2026

Mountain Development In Nepal: Settlements, Infrastructure, And Economic Transformation, Keshav Bhattarai, Ambika P. Adhikari

Himalayan Research Papers Archive

As Nepal urbanizes, expands infrastructure, strengthens local governments, and explores deeper connectivity with India and China, climate change is increasing floods, landslides, heat, and water insecurity. Rapid internal migration, rising disaster risks, youth outmigration, and dependence on remittances are also revealing the limits of conventional urban development, especially in the mountainous region. The central challenge for Nepal is no longer just to accommodate growing towns and cities, but to build settlements that are safe, productive, environmentally resilient, and capable of sustaining long-term prosperity.

This paper argues that Nepal's urban future must be guided by a new development paradigm centered on …

Integrating Satellite Observations And Modeling Approaches To Study Tectonic And Land Surface Hazards, Jeng Hann Chong Oct 2025

Integrating Satellite Observations And Modeling Approaches To Study Tectonic And Land Surface Hazards, Jeng Hann Chong

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

The increasing availability of Earth observation satellites, such as SAR and optical platforms, has improved our ability to study the ground deformation processes during, after, and leading up to these natural hazards, such as earthquakes and debris flows. In this dissertation, I analyze satellite geodetic interseismic velocities across the Rakhine-Bangladesh megathrust and the influence of having realistic modeling assumptions for subduction zones to better constrain seismic hazard. I also examined changes in post-fire debris flow likelihood four years after the 2020 Lake Fire in Southern California using a suite of satellite data and field observations. Together, these studies highlight how …

Graphic Scotland: Visuality And Empire, 1810 – 1913, Laura Michelle Golobish

Art & Art History ETDs

Graphic Scotland: Visuality and Empire, 1810–1913 interrogates the aesthetic, technological, and literary conventions used to represent Scotland’s character in nineteenth-century publications. Beginning in the late eighteenth century, publishers, authors, and readers began to correlate the material format of prints, books, illustration, and bookbinding with individual and national character. Periodicals and literature drew the correlations between the aesthetic conventions of picturesque Scottish landscape, physiognomy of Scottish authors, and bookbinding to frame ideas about Scottish character as a didactic model for middle class British and American readers. Thus, Graphic Scotland offers an intertextual reading of three illustrated publications about Scotland–J.R. Osgood’s 1882 …

Landscape Evolution Of The Southern Colorado Plateau Using Low-Temperature Apatite Thermochronology And Detrital Zircon And Sanidine Provenance Studies, Carmen L. Winn Dec 2019

Landscape Evolution Of The Southern Colorado Plateau Using Low-Temperature Apatite Thermochronology And Detrital Zircon And Sanidine Provenance Studies, Carmen L. Winn

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

Chapter 1: Westernmost Grand Canyon

Conflicting hypotheses about the timing of carving of the Grand Canyon involve either a 70 Ma (“old”) or < 6 Ma (“young”) Grand Canyon. This paper evaluates the controversial westernmost segment of the Grand Canyon where the following lines of published evidence firmly favor a “young” Canyon. 1) North-derived Paleocene Hindu Fanglomerate was deposited across the present track of the westernmost Grand Canyon, which therefore was not present at ~55 Ma. 2) The 19 Ma Separation Point basalt is stranded between high relief side canyons feeding the main stem of the Colorado River and was emplaced before these tributaries and the main canyon were incised. 3) Geomorphic constraints indicate that relief generation in tributaries and on plateaus adjacent to the westernmost Grand Canyon took place after 17 Ma. 4) The late Miocene-Pliocene Muddy Creek Formation constraint shows that no river carrying far-traveled materials exited at the mouth of the Grand Canyon until after 6 Ma.

Interpretations of previously-published low-temperature thermochronologic data conflict with these lines of evidence, but are reconciled in this paper via the integration of three methods of analyses on the same sample: apatite (U-Th)/He ages (AHe), 4He/3He thermochronometry (4He/3He), and apatite fission-track ages and lengths (AFT). “HeFTy” software was used to generate time-temperature (t-T) paths that predict all new and published 4He/3He, AH, and AFT data to within assumed …

Microtextural Studies Of Feldspar In Ordinary Chondrites, Jonathan A. Lewis Apr 2018

Microtextural Studies Of Feldspar In Ordinary Chondrites, Jonathan A. Lewis

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

Ordinary chondrites contain an important record of events that took place during the earliest period of solar system evolution. These include primary processes, such as chondrule formation, and secondary processes, those that affected asteroids after accretion and modified primary components. Secondary processes include aqueous alteration, thermal metamorphism, and shock effects from impact events. Secondary minerals can provide insight into the chemical and physical conditions that affected their parent asteroids. Feldspar is known to be a secondary mineral that crystallized during thermal metamorphism. The goal of this work is to use the formation and evolution of feldspar to elucidate the conditions …

Global Seawater Redox Trends During The Late Devonian Mass Extinction Detected Using U Isotopes Of Marine Carbonates, David Allen White Feb 2018

Global Seawater Redox Trends During The Late Devonian Mass Extinction Detected Using U Isotopes Of Marine Carbonates, David Allen White

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

The Late Devonian extinction ranks as one of the ‘big five’ Phanerozoic extinctions affecting up to 80% of marine species and occurred during five distinct pulses spanning /or widespread marine anoxia. We test the marine anoxia hypothesis by analyzing uranium isotopes (δ238U) across a ~7 My interval of well-dated Upper Devonian marine carbonates from the Devil’s Gate Limestone in Nevada, USA.

The measured δ238U curve shows no co-variation with local anoxic facies, water-depth dependent facies changes, redox-sensitive metals, TOC, or diagnostic elemental ratios indicating the δ238U curve was not controlled by local depositional or …

Comparing Subsurface Trespass Jurisprudence—Geophysical Surveying And Hydraulic Fracturing, Christopher S. Kulander, R. Jordan Shaw Jan 2016

Comparing Subsurface Trespass Jurisprudence—Geophysical Surveying And Hydraulic Fracturing, Christopher S. Kulander, R. Jordan Shaw

New Mexico Law Review

This article examines the basics of two types of subsurface activity— geophysical prospecting (and the myriad of different surveys that comprise same) and hydraulic fracturing (or “fracing” sometimes herein)—describing the purpose of both, comparing the physical science background, field activities necessary, and data gathered in both, and analysis of the motivations of the parties conducting the activities. The article also contains an examination of selected germane subsurface trespass jurisprudence from New Mexico, Texas, and beyond. The article ends with thoughts and about what ought to be the state of subsurface trespass jurisprudence related to geophysical surveying and fracing and whether …

Into The Tropics: A Quantitative Study Of Mammals In The Great American Biotic Interchange, Winifred S. B. Whiteman-Jennings

Biology ETDs

For almost 100 million years, North and South America were isolated from each other. This long period of geologic separation led to the evolution of strikingly different mammalian faunas: marsupials were prevalent in South America, while ecosystems in North America were composed of placental mammals. Roughly 3 Mya, a land bridge formed between the two continents leading to an accelerated exchange of mammalian fauna. The Great American Biotic Interchange (or GABI, as this has come to be called,) led to the successful colonization of many North American species, but few South American species. The highly asymmetrical nature of the faunal …

Characterization Of The Northern Hemisphere Glacial Cycle-Ii And Termination From High Resolution Speleothem Isotope And Trace Elemental Time-Series Data, Southwest United States, Zachary Lapointe Jul 2013

Characterization Of The Northern Hemisphere Glacial Cycle-Ii And Termination From High Resolution Speleothem Isotope And Trace Elemental Time-Series Data, Southwest United States, Zachary Lapointe

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

Absolute dated high-resolution records from two speleothems from the southwestern United States (SW USA) are used to constrain the timing and character of the Penultimate Glacial period (NH Glacial-II) and the following glacial termination (T-II) in the northern hemisphere (NH). Speleothems FS-TR3 from Fort Stanton Cave and CaCa-MSC-3 from Carlsbad Caverns National Park reconfirm the close connection between NH Glacial-II climate changes and NH insolation variation. NH Glacial-II maxima observed in the southwestern United States (SW USA) corresponds with Heinrich Event 11 (HE11) and a weak East Asian (EA) monsoon event observed in southeast (SE) China stalagmites SB11 (Cheng et …

Neotectonic Evolution Of Grand Canyon : Interaction Between Volcanism, River Incision, Epeirogenic Uplift, And Faulting, Ryan Crow

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

This thesis focuses on the effects of volcanism, river incision, epeirogenic uplift, and faulting on the landscape evolution of the Grand Canyon region. In the first chapter the migration of increasingly asthenospheric basaltic volcanism is used to constrain lithospheric modification of the Colorado Plateau margins. Buoyancy modification of the upper mantle, driven by the upwelling, is a likely driver for recent uplift of the area. In the second chapter, correlation between oversteepened rivers and areas of high-velocity upper mantle is used to show that recent and ongoing mantle-driven uplift is modulating the surface along the western margin of the Colorado …

Geochemistry Of Cave Pools In The Guadalupe Mountains, Nm : Implications For Geomicrobiology, Kooser Ara Feb 2012

Geochemistry Of Cave Pools In The Guadalupe Mountains, Nm : Implications For Geomicrobiology, Kooser Ara

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

The study of the chemistry of waters in cave pools in the Guadalupe Mountains, NM was conducted to determine the variation in cave pool water geochemistry, explain hydrogeologic variations in a geologic context, identify the processes that control cave pool hydrologic variations and determine geochemical controls on modern and paleo-bacterial communities. Structural studies indicate cave pools align along NE and NW structures in the karst system. The intersection of Permian structures and Cenozoic related structures provide pathways for infiltrating water. Water samples were collected from 19 new cave pools; the results were integrated with published geochemistry from 192 cave pools, …

Paleomagnetic Data Bearing On The Evolution Of The Walker Lane Belt Transfer Zone From Mid-Miocene To Present : An Investigation Of The Inferred Southern And Eastern Boundaries, Jack Grow Jul 2009

Paleomagnetic Data Bearing On The Evolution Of The Walker Lane Belt Transfer Zone From Mid-Miocene To Present : An Investigation Of The Inferred Southern And Eastern Boundaries, Jack Grow

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

The Walker Lane Belt (WLB) transfer zone, which initiated in the mid-Miocene, presently links the Eastern California Shear Zone in the south to the Central Nevada Seismic Belt and northern WLB to the northeast and north, respectively. The boundaries of the transfer system are clear on the northern and western margins but the extent of the system to the south and east is only inferred. The extent of deformation and development of the WLB transfer zone since the mid-Miocene was examined through a paleomagnetic study of rocks collected at 135 sites, including Neogene volcanic rocks and ashflow tuffs near the …

Petrobras Examining Potential New Oil-Field Discovery, Notisur

NotiEn: An Analytical Digest About Energy Issues in Latin America

Brazil's state-owned oil company Petroleo Brasileiro S.A. (Petrobras) may have discovered another site of massive offshore oil reserves just months after it announced the largest petroleum discovery in years. If tests show that the offshore deposit in the Espirito Santo field in the Atlantic Ocean contains as much as early reports claimed, it would be the world's third-largest reserve and the world's biggest discovery in decades. Carioca four times bigger than Tupi? In the final months of 2007, Petrobras announced the discovery of 5 billion to 8 billion barrels of oil and natural-gas reserves at the offshore Tupi field. The …

Proterozoic Farwell Mountain-Lester Mountain Suture Zone, Northern Colorado : Subduction Flip And Progressive Assembly Of Arcs, Amanda Tyson

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

The mechanisms by which juvenile Paleoproterozoic continental crust was derived from the mantle, accreted to southwestern Laurentia ca. 1.78-1.68 Ga, and stabilized as new continental lithosphere have been much debated. This study addresses the problem by assessing the proposed Paleoproterozoic "Farwell Mountain–Lester Mountain suture zone," a broad, complex zone of deformation that may contain the oldest accretionary structures within Paleoproterozoic crust south of the Cheyenne belt. The proposed "suture zone" is mapped in the Park Range of northern Colorado as a northeast-trending belt of imbricated tectonic slivers between ca. 1.79-1.77 Ga Green Mountain rocks to the north and ca. 1.76-1.72 …

Genesis And Evolution Of Proterozoic Crustal Boundaries In The Southern Rocky Mountains., Colin Arthur Shaw Jul 2001

Genesis And Evolution Of Proterozoic Crustal Boundaries In The Southern Rocky Mountains., Colin Arthur Shaw

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

The lithosphere of the southwestern United States is a mosaic of Proterozoic arc terranes assembled to the southern margin of the Archean Wyoming craton between 1.8 and 1.6 Ga. This mosaic was profoundly transformed by ca. 1.4 Ga intracontinental plutonism, metamorphism, and tectonism. These processes of assembly and tectonic reactivation during the early stages of continental evolution laid the foundation for the development of the continental architecture of the southwestern United States.

This dissertation comprises three independent studies focused on different aspects of the Proterozoic evolution of tectonic boundaries exposed in the Southern Rocky Mountains. The first study is a …
