Finding Fish Families: Movement And Demography Of Loach Minnow (Tiaroga Cobitis) Inferred From Gt-Seq-Enabled Kinship Analysis, Patrick C. Baca Jul 2026

Finding Fish Families: Movement And Demography Of Loach Minnow (Tiaroga Cobitis) Inferred From Gt-Seq-Enabled Kinship Analysis, Patrick C. Baca

Biology ETDs

River fragmentation poses major threats to freshwater biodiversity by reducing connectivity and limiting persistence of imperiled desert fishes. Connectivity in streams is impaired by anthropogenic changes, including road crossings, prompting the installation of engineered fish passage structures at low-water road crossings and raising questions about the dispersal of aquatic species across these structures. This thesis investigates the movement of the threatened Loach Minnow (Tiaroga cobitis) by applying a close-kin mark-recapture (CKMR) framework in a restored stream (including a fish passage) and a stream without rehabilitation efforts. We developed and optimized a GT-seq panel for relatedness analysis and used it to …

The Formation Of Indian Health Services Within Imperial And Settler-Colonial Contexts, Jillian E. Grisel May 2026

The Formation Of Indian Health Services Within Imperial And Settler-Colonial Contexts, Jillian E. Grisel

American Studies ETDs

This dissertation examines the Indian Health Services as a Cold War biosecurity apparatus, showing how infectious disease was weaponized to dismantle treaty obligations, reorganize tribal lands into “service areas,” and reclassify Indigenous nations as surveilled populations. Against this carceral health economy, Indigenous nations refused. From the 1969 Alcatraz occupation to the 1976 Puyallup takeover of Cushman Indian Hospital, Native activists reclaimed health facilities as sovereign spaces, insisting that care is not a discretionary service but a treaty right grounded in land and kinship. Methodologically, I combine historical-legal analysis of congressional debates, Public Health Service reports, and IHS data with counter-archives …

Neutrosophic Sets and Systems

This study analyzes the Growth Rate behavior Demographic (TDC) of the countries Latin Americans during the period 1961–2023 through Methods Multivariate Functional and Neutrosophic TOPSIS. The techniques descriptive, grouping functional and display using Functional Biplot allowed identify curves of countries with behavior atypical (Venezuela, Uruguay, Honduras) and group countries with patterns similar in different points in the period studied. The integration of TOPSIS Neutrosophic modeled uncertainty in key factors such as policies internal, migration and access to family planning, classifying countries according to his performance demographic. The results reveal a decrease sustained TDC over 63 years in the region, with …

Ecological Impacts Of Invasive Crayfish In A Naïve Riparian System, Gregor L. Hamilton Apr 2023

Ecological Impacts Of Invasive Crayfish In A Naïve Riparian System, Gregor L. Hamilton

Biology ETDs

Aquatic and riparian food webs are inextricably linked. In deserts, they provide critical energy subsidies to surrounding terrestrial food webs, but these vital subsidies are not guaranteed; streams in arid lands are especially sensitive to perturbations. In this dissertation, I investigated the role of an oft-cited threat to stream communities in the lower Colorado River basin: non-native crayfish. I contributed to methodologies in passive integrated transponder use and length-weight relationships in crayfish to aid future research. I leveraged stable isotope analysis of δ15N, δ13C, and δ2H to understand crayfish role in the food webs. …

Sexual Dimorphism In Host Innate Response To Staphylococcus Aureus: Mechanisms Driving Sex Differences In Immune Cell Function And Host-Directed Interventions, Srijana Pokhrel

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

With the emerging antibiotic resistance, Staphylococcus aureus, primary causative agent of skin and soft tissue infections (SSTIs) as well as other life-threatening conditions has become a global health concern. While factors contributing to host defense against S. aureus SSTIs has been well studied, impact of sex as a variable has not been reported. In Chapter 2, we uncover the sex-specific differences in host response to S. aureus SSTIs and the contribution of female sex hormone, estrogen (E2) in providing protection in females. In Chapter 3, we identify mechanisms of innate differences in neutrophils bactericidal efficacy between sexes and in …

Recovering Abiquiú’S Lost Church Records, Samuel E. Sisneros Nov 2019

Recovering Abiquiú’S Lost Church Records, Samuel E. Sisneros

University Libraries & Learning Sciences Faculty and Staff Publications

In early 2016, an elderly couple came into UNM’s Center for Southwest Research & Special Collections determined to donate six hide-covered books to the archives. They confessed they did not know their contents and that even though the books were in the care of the family for many years, they thought UNM would be a suitable place for them to be preserved and studied. I immediately realized that these antique books were the long lost baptismal, marriage and burial registers (1777-1861) from the Mission Church of Santo Tomás Apóstol de Abiquiú and that the rightful repository for them was the …

Exploring Clinically Useful Definitions Of Treatment Success For Individuals With Alcohol Use Disorder, Megan Kirouac Aug 2018

Exploring Clinically Useful Definitions Of Treatment Success For Individuals With Alcohol Use Disorder, Megan Kirouac

Psychology ETDs

Given the widespread costs associated with alcohol use disorder (AUD; World Health Organization, 2011), it is unsurprising that many treatments exist for AUD. Moreover, many treatments have been rigorously studied via experimental research designs. In such research, treatment success has been defined predominantly as abstinence from alcohol or, more recently, no heavy drinking days. Consumption-based definitions of treatment success, rather than alternative non-consumption based definitions, have dominated in the field for at least two reasons. First, there are multiple measures of similar non-consumption constructs (e.g., quality of life, psychosocial functioning), and very little research has been conducted to direct researchers …

Plant-Microbial Interactions Are Strong Determinants Of Plant Population And Community Dynamics, Yan-Yi Anny Chung 9485698 May 2017

Plant-Microbial Interactions Are Strong Determinants Of Plant Population And Community Dynamics, Yan-Yi Anny Chung 9485698

Biology ETDs

Plant-microbial interactions are ubiquitous and yet the consequences of these interactions on plant population and community dynamics are relatively unknown. Here, we used two different classes of plant-microbial interactions to examine their effects on key plant population and community characteristics such as commonness and rarity, competition and coexistence, as well as community stability.

Vertically-transmitted endophytes had stage-dependent effects on the population growth of two grass species Poa sylvestris and Poa alsodes, and generally increased host population growth rates. However, it was the intrinsic demographic advantage of P. sylvestris that allowed its population to grow at a much faster rate …

Measure Development Of An Assessment Of 'Hitting Bottom' For Individuals With Alcohol Problems, Megan Kirouac Jan 2015

Measure Development Of An Assessment Of 'Hitting Bottom' For Individuals With Alcohol Problems, Megan Kirouac

Psychology ETDs

Alcohol problems are a serious public health concern but few individuals with alcohol problems and alcohol use disorders (AUDs) ever receive formal treatment (SAMHSA, 2009). To understand and address this phenomenon, it is important to understand why individuals decide to seek treatment, which may help clinicians facilitate treatment entry and completion among individuals with AUDs. Research on reasons individuals cite for seeking treatment and their success in recovering from AUDs suggests that hitting bottom' may be important (e.g., Sobell, Sobell, Toneatto, & Leo, 1993). Accordingly, evaluating the concept of 'hitting bottom' may provide insight into why individuals seek and complete …

Spousal-Differences In Perception Of Female Autonomy In Household Decision-Making In Nepal, Sharmistha Self Jan 2015

Spousal-Differences In Perception Of Female Autonomy In Household Decision-Making In Nepal, Sharmistha Self

Development Journal of the South

The primary objective of this paper is to see how spouses differ in terms of their perception of female autonomy in household decision-making in Nepal and the factors that influence these perceptions. Understanding the perception of female autonomy is important in general but particularly so for developing countries with traditional male-dominated and well-defined patriarchal roles in society. In general, the results seem to converge between men and women when it comes to perception of female autonomy in non-economic decision making but not when it relates to decision-making in economic matters. The results have important policy implications.

High-Interest Loans And Class: Do Payday And Title Loans Really Serve The Middle Class?, Ernesto A. Longa, Nathalie Martin

Faculty Scholarship

Most of us would never dream of paying 300-600% per annum for a loan. Yet every year between two and four percent of the U.S. population does just that, by taking out a high-cost credit product such as a payday loan. Others take out expensive title loans. What would you expect the general demographic characteristics of the payday and title loan users to be? Would they be primarily middle-income Americans or people closer to the poverty level? Would they be primarily homeowners or renters? This article describes the demographic characteristics of high-cost loan users by reporting on studies done by …

Gender, Power, And Authority In Indigenous Mexico City, 1700-1829, Margarita R. Ochoa Aug 2011

Gender, Power, And Authority In Indigenous Mexico City, 1700-1829, Margarita R. Ochoa

History ETDs

The question that has long tantalized historians, observing the process of Mexico City's transition from indigenous center to Spanish capital, was what became of the vast indigenous populations organized into 'cities and villages and towns' that so amazed Bernal Díaz, Hernando Cortés, and others. This dissertation aims precisely to answer that question, especially for the late colonial period when it would seem that multiple generations of the indigenous and non-indigenous would have so intermingled in the city as to be the dominant portion of the population. In addition to this demographic hybridization or mestizaje, there is the cultural question: After …

Selective Tree Thinning In The Santa Fe Municipal Watershed For Water Yield Augmentation, Uday V. Joshi Sep 2010

Selective Tree Thinning In The Santa Fe Municipal Watershed For Water Yield Augmentation, Uday V. Joshi

Water Resources Professional Project Reports

Water scarcity in southwestern United States is nothing new. It has been an issue since the southwest's earliest settlements. However, this problem has gained increased notoriety due to greater demands on the finite resource . Increasing population and competing demands on water resources require new solutions to water scarcity. The threat of surface and underground water depletion has even catalyzed another round of experimentation in cloud seeding, one method, no matter how far-fetched, for augmenting supplies. Conservation programs have reduced domestic water usage by minimizing inefficient water usage, but few address the realistic possibilities of increasing water supplies. Tree thinning …

Parental Investment And Elite Family Structure In Preindustrial States: A Case Study Of Late Medieval-Early Modern Portuguese Genealogies, James L. Boone Dec 1986

Parental Investment And Elite Family Structure In Preindustrial States: A Case Study Of Late Medieval-Early Modern Portuguese Genealogies, James L. Boone

Anthropology Faculty & Staff Publications

In this paper I examine the idea that patriarchal family structure among elites in stratified societies originates as a form of parental investment favoring male children. Patriliny and restricted inheritance among 15th- and 16th-century Portuguese nobility are analyzed as reproductive strategies aimed at maximizing lineage survival and posterity in the face of high mortality. Demographic data derived from genealogies show that among the high nobility, males out reproduce females, whereas among the lower nobility, females outreproduced males, and that the tendency to concentrate investment in male offspring correspondingly increases with status. This family structural arrangement has the societal effect of generating …

An Assessment Of Affirmative Action In Law School Admissions After Fifteen Years: A Need For Recommitment, Leo M. Romero Jan 1984

An Assessment Of Affirmative Action In Law School Admissions After Fifteen Years: A Need For Recommitment, Leo M. Romero

Faculty Scholarship

Law schools have been admitting minority students through affirmative action programs since the late 1960s. The number of minority students matriculating in American law schools increased significantly as a result of affirmative action. Nearly three thousand or 4.3 percent of the 68,386 students enrolled in 1969-1970 were members of minority groups. By 1982-1983, the number and percentage of minority students had increased to 11,611 and 9 percent of the law school population of 127,915. The percentage of minority applicants enrolled in the first year of law school jumped from 4.2 percent in 1969-1970 to 10.5 percent in 1982-1983.
