Introduction

The University of New Mexico Dental Hygiene and College of Nursing (CON) faculty created an interactive interprofessional education (IPE) activity to enhance student assessment, communication, and collaboration skills, which met CON and Dental Hygiene clinical objectives and Interprofessional Education Collaborative (IPEC) competencies.

Methods

Participants of the IPE activity included 24 dental hygiene students and 62 CON students, who were divided into small groups. Nursing students provided education about pain assessments, scales, and tools, then dental hygiene students participated in a role play based scenario. The purpose of this study was to assess the education that dental hygiene students receive in practicing within schools and public health settings. The settings assessed were outside the classroom, student clinic and student rotation sites. Data were gathered by a survey/questionnaire created by Red Cap, through the University of New Mexico. The survey/questionnaire was available to participants for ten days and contained a total of 13 questions. The survey was sent to dental hygiene program directors within Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) accredited dental hygiene programs throughout the United States. Although dental hygienists are educated to practice in alternative practice settings like pediatric offices, hospitals, nursing homes, schools and federally qualified health centers they are underutilized in such arenas. The purpose of this study is to learn about the University of New Mexico Hospital’s (UNMH) current oral hygiene care practices and protocols, nurses’ values and interests in inter-professional collaboration with a dental hygienist.

Educators who teach in a clinical setting, primarily in healthcare fields, while having knowledge of the subject, having skills in what is taught, and having experience in the field, often have little-to-no training in teaching. This results in instructional practices being based upon intuition and experience. The number of institutionalized persons with developmental disabilities has decreased by 75 percent and those living in psychiatric facilities has decreased by 91 percent since deinstitutionalization began in the1960s1-3.
