Cellular Roles Of Dna Polymerase Beta, Sreerupa Ray, Miriam-Rose Menezes, Ali Senejani, Joann Balazs Sweasy

Biology and Environmental Science Faculty Publications

Since its discovery and purification in 1971, DNA polymerase ß (Pol ߆) is one of the most well-studied DNA polymerases. Pol ß is a key enzyme in the base excision repair (BER) pathway that functions in gap filling DNA synthesis subsequent to the excision of damaged DNA bases. A major focus of our studies is on the cellular roles of Pol ß. We have shown that germline and tumor-associated variants of Pol ß catalyze aberrant BER that leads to genomic instability and cellular transformation. Our studies suggest that Pol ß is critical for the maintenance of genomic stability and that …

Immobilization Of Lead In Contaminated Firing Range Soil Using Biochar, Deok Hyun Moon, Jae-Woo Park, Yoon-Young Chang, Yong Sik Ok, Sang Soo Lee, Mahtab Ahmad, Agamemnon Koutsospyros, Jeong Hun Park, Kitae Baek

Civil Engineering Faculty Publications

Soybean stover-derived biochar was used to immobilize lead (Pb) in military firing range soil at a mass application rate of 0 to 20 wt.% and a curing period of 7 days. The toxicity characteristic leaching procedure (TCLP) was performed to evaluate the effectiveness of the treatment. The mechanism responsible for Pb immobilization in military firing range soil was evaluated by scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDX) and x-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) spectroscopy analyses. The treatment results showed that TCLP Pb leachability decreased with increasing biochar content. A reduction of over 90 % in Pb leachability was achieved upon …

Efficient Routing For Wireless Mesh Networks Using A Backup Path, Amir Esmailpour, Nidal Nasser, Jehad Al Dallal Dec 2013

Efficient Routing For Wireless Mesh Networks Using A Backup Path, Amir Esmailpour, Nidal Nasser, Jehad Al Dallal

Electrical & Computer Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications

Wireless Mesh Network (WMN) has a proven record in providing viable solutions for some of the fundamental issues in wireless networks such as capacity and range limitations. WMN infrastructure includes clusters of Mobile Ad-Hoc Networks (MANETs) connected through a fixed backbone of mesh routers. The mesh network can be constrained severely due to various reasons, which could result in performance degradation such as a drop in throughput or long delays. Solutions to this problem often focus on multipath or multichannel extensions to the existing ad- hoc routing protocols. In this paper, we propose a novel solution by introducing an alternative …

Forensic Science Publications

Ground penetrating radar (GPR) is a non-invasive, geophysical tool that can be used for the identification of clandestine graves. GPR operates by detecting density differences in soil by the transmission of high frequency electromagnetic waves from an antenna. Domestic pig (Sus scrofa domesticus) carcasses were clothed in 100% cotton t-shirts and 50% cotton/50% polyester briefs, and buried at a consistent depth at three field sites of contrasting soil texture (silty clay loam, fine sand and fine sandy loam) in southern Ontario. GPR was used to detect and monitor the graves for a period of 14 months post-burial. Analysis of collected …

On The Relationship Between Exchange Rates And Stock Prices: Evidence From Emerging Markets, Esin Cakan, Demissew D. Ejara Jul 2013

On The Relationship Between Exchange Rates And Stock Prices: Evidence From Emerging Markets, Esin Cakan, Demissew D. Ejara

Economics & Business Analytics Faculty Publications

This study examines dynamic linkages between the exchange rates and stock prices for twelve emerging market countries for the period from May 1994 to April 2010 by using linear and non-linear Granger causality tests. Our empirical results show that stock prices and exchange rates have linear and non-linear bi-directional causality in most cases. The exceptional countries are Brazil, Poland and Taiwan, in that there is no evidence for a non-linear Granger causality from stock prices to exchange rates. The results support both the portfolio balance and the goods market theories for eight out of twelve countries. JEL Classifications Codes: F30, …

Income Polarization And Income Inequality In Connecticut During The Great Recession, A. E. Rodriguez, Scott J. Lane Jul 2013

Income Polarization And Income Inequality In Connecticut During The Great Recession, A. E. Rodriguez, Scott J. Lane

Economics & Business Analytics Faculty Publications

In this paper, using Bureau of the Census family income data we formally examine the income polarization hypothesis for the State of Connecticut. We ask and answer two questions. First, did the polarization of income deteriorate over the Great Recession years of 2007-2009? If the observed clustering around two opposite poles that existed in Connecticut prior to the Great Recession increased between the years immediately prior to the recession and immediately after (2006-2010) it would be consistent with the perception that the size of the middle class decreased over this period. Second, have income polarization and income inequality fared significantly …

Spatial And Temporal Patterns In Macrofaunal Diversity Components Relative To Sea Floor Landscape, Roman Zajac, Brittney R. Gibbons, Joseph M. Vozarik Jun 2013

Spatial And Temporal Patterns In Macrofaunal Diversity Components Relative To Sea Floor Landscape, Roman Zajac, Brittney R. Gibbons, Joseph M. Vozarik

Biology and Environmental Science Faculty Publications

We examined temporal changes in macrofaunal α- and β-diversity over several spatial scales (within patches, among patches, across landscapes and across regions) in Long Island Sound on the northeast USA coast. Regional ε-diversity was estimated at 144 taxa, however γ-diversity fluctuated over time as did α- and β-diversity components. Based on additive partitioning, patch- and region-scale β-diversity components generally had the highest contributions to γ-diversity; lower percentages were found at within-patch and landscape scales. Multiplicative diversity partitioning indicated highest species turnover at within- and among patch scales. For all partition results, within-patch and patch-scale β-diversity increased sharply when hypoxia impacted …

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) have been found to be stable in the circulation of cancer patients raising their potential as circulating biomarkers of disease. The specific source and role, however, of miRNAs in the circulation is unknown and requires elucidation to determine their true potential. In this study, along with primary tissue explants and primary stromal cells, three breast cancer cell lines were employed, including T47D, MDA-MB-231 and SK-BR-3. Tissue explants were harvested in theatre, with informed patient consent, and included tumour, tumour associated normal, and diseased lymph node samples. Cell-conditioned media containing all factors secreted by the cells were harvested. MiRNAs …

Disentangling The Effects Of Violent Victimization, Violent Behavior, And Gun Carrying For Minority Inner-City Youth Living In Extreme Poverty, Richard Spano, John Bolland Mar 2013

Disentangling The Effects Of Violent Victimization, Violent Behavior, And Gun Carrying For Minority Inner-City Youth Living In Extreme Poverty, Richard Spano, John Bolland

Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

Two waves of longitudinal data were used to examine the sequencing between violent victimization, violent behavior, and gun carrying in a high-poverty sample of African American youth. Multivariate logistic regression results indicated that violent victimization T1 and violent behavior T1 increased the likelihood of initiation of gun carrying T2 when examined separately (by 132% and 91%, respectively). However, only violent victimization T1 was a significant predictor of initiation of gun carrying T2 after controlling for violent behavior T1. More nuanced analyses uncovered no significant difference in the likelihood of initiating gun carrying when comparing offensive versus defensive gun carriers. The …

Mathematics Faculty Publications

We have studied contact metric hypersurfaces of a Bochner-Kaehler manifold and obtained the following two results: (1) A contact metric constant mean curvature (C M C) hypersurface of a Bochner-Kaehler manifold is a (k, µ)-contact manifold, and (2) If M is a compact contact metric C M C hypersurface of a Bochner-Kaehler manifold with a conformal vector field V that is neither tangential nor normal anywhere, then it is totally umbilical and Sasakian, and under certain conditions on V , is isometric to a unit sphere.

Are The Kids Alright? A Critique And Agenda For Taking Youth Subcultures Seriously, Jeffrey S. Debies-Carl Jan 2013

Are The Kids Alright? A Critique And Agenda For Taking Youth Subcultures Seriously, Jeffrey S. Debies-Carl

Sociology Faculty Publications

Researchers have long been fascinated with youth subcultures. Decades of study have yielded several competing paradigms, which attempt to interpret these subcultures in diverse ways, with each succeeding paradigm criticizing, and attempting to improve on, those that came before it. Rather than offering criticism of a specific youth studies paradigm, this article provides a critique of this body of theory as a whole by delineating several theoretical assumptions that have persisted across these perspectives. These include: (1) the tendency to group all youth phenomena under a monolithic conceptual umbrella; (2) a preoccupation on the part of researchers with style and …

Association Of Spirochetal Infection With Morgellons Disease, Marianne J. Middelveen, Divya Burugu, Akhila Poruri, Jennie Burke, Peter J. Mayne, Eva Sapi, Douglas G. Kahn, Raphael B. Stricker

Biology and Environmental Science Faculty Publications

Morgellons disease (MD) is an emerging multisystem illness characterized by skin lesions with unusual filaments embedded in or projecting from epithelial tissue. Filament formation results from abnormal keratin and collagen expression by epithelial-based keratinocytes and fibroblasts. Recent research comparing MD to bovine digital dermatitis, an animal infectious disease with similar skin features, provided clues that spirochetal infection could play an important role in the human disease as it does in the animal illness. Based on histological staining, immunofluorescent staining, electron microscopic imaging and polymerase chain reaction, we report the detection of Borrelia spirochetes in dermatological tissue of four randomly-selected MD …

Building social capital (SC) is increasingly recognized as essential for organizational and social growth. However, there is a scant amount of literature on how leaders are expected to develop SC as an individual and organizational competence. While this article develops new frameworks for both SC and global leadership (GL), it offers practical suggestions to practitioners in human resource development and management on how they can set up strategies for developing both GL and SC.

The Contemporary Face Of Transnational Criminal Organizations And The Threat They Pose To U.S. National Interest: A Global Perspective., Vesna Markovic Jan 2013

The Contemporary Face Of Transnational Criminal Organizations And The Threat They Pose To U.S. National Interest: A Global Perspective., Vesna Markovic

Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

Traditional organized crime groups have consistently posed issues for la w enforcement; however, the contemporary TCOs present an even greater security risk and threat. TCOs thrive in countries with a weak rule of law and present a great threat to regional security in many parts of the world. Bribery and corruption employed by these groups further serve to destabilize already weak governments. These TCOs also present a major threat to U.S. and world financial systems by exploiting legitimate commerce, and in some cases creating parallel markets (“Transnational Organized,” 2011) . Finally, one of the most significant threats posed by contemporary …

Lo Abyecto Vs. Lo Sagrado: Los Siete Pecados Capitales Y La Naturaleza En La Charca De Manuel Zeno Gandía, Alessia Dalsant Jan 2013

Lo Abyecto Vs. Lo Sagrado: Los Siete Pecados Capitales Y La Naturaleza En La Charca De Manuel Zeno Gandía, Alessia Dalsant

Modern Languages Faculty Publications

A Science Of Context: The Qualitative Approach As Fundamental To Strategic Thought, Matthew J. Schmidt Jan 2013

A Science Of Context: The Qualitative Approach As Fundamental To Strategic Thought, Matthew J. Schmidt

Political Science Faculty Publications

(from book introduction, pp. 6-7) "Schmidt describes the differences between quantitative and qualitative approaches, research questions, and thought processes. Schmidt argues that quantitative methods are appropriate for tactical engagements and can inform strategic thinking, but a completely different thought process (i.e., qualitative) is necessary for success when asking questions with strategic implications. Schmidt also discusses how time delays can affect the perceived impact of qualitative modes of thinking."

Open Peer Review: Collective Intelligence As A Framework For Theorizing Approaches To Peer Review In The Humanities, Jenna Sheffield

English Faculty Publications

In this NANO note, I focus on online commenting functions and how they have been—and can be—used for open peer review to help improve the quality of an author’s scholarly work and change the way publishers go about their peer review processes. While open peer review is not necessarily digital, digital technologies allow for a broader range of participants and faster dissemination of knowledge, which is why this article focuses on online open peer review. I focus on commenting functions because they are becoming the niche technology through which open peer review is occurring in digital spaces. In addition, commenting …

Exchange Rate Adjustment And Output In South-East Asia, Kamal P. Upadhyaya, Robert Ranish, Neetu Kaushik, Rabindra Bhandari Jan 2013

Exchange Rate Adjustment And Output In South-East Asia, Kamal P. Upadhyaya, Robert Ranish, Neetu Kaushik, Rabindra Bhandari

Finance Faculty Publications

This paper studies the effect of currency devaluation on aggregate output level in South- East Asian countries using panel data from Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines for a period from 1980 to 2010. An empirical model that includes monetary, fiscal and exchange rate variables is developed. Two versions of the model, one with real exchange rate and another with nominal exchange rate and foreign-to-domestic price ratio are estimated. An error correction model is developed and the time series properties of the panel data are diagnosed before estimating the model. The estimated results suggest that currency devaluations are contractionary in …
