A Novel Deliberative Multicriteria Evaluation Approach To Ecosystem Service Valuation, Georgia Mayrommati, Mark E. Borsuk, Richard B. Howarth
A Novel Deliberative Multicriteria Evaluation Approach To Ecosystem Service Valuation, Georgia Mayrommati, Mark E. Borsuk, Richard B. Howarth
New Hampshire EPSCoR
Although efforts to address ecosystem services in decision making have advanced considerably in recent years, there remain challenges related to valuation. In particular, conventional economic approaches have been criticized for their inability to capture the collective nature of ecosystem services, for their emphasis on monetary metrics, and the difficulty of assessing the value of ecosystem services to future generations. We present a deliberative multicriteria evaluation (DMCE) method that combines the advantages of multicriteria decision analysis with a deliberation process that allows citizens and scientists to exchange knowledge and evaluate ecosystem services in a social context. Compared with previous applications we …

Methodological Variations In Environmental Justice Screening Tools And Their Impact On Disadvantaged Community Designations, Thomas Robbins, Qingran Li, Stephen Bird
Methodological Variations In Environmental Justice Screening Tools And Their Impact On Disadvantaged Community Designations, Thomas Robbins, Qingran Li, Stephen Bird
Faculty Publications
Government agencies in the United States have developed environmental justice screening tools (EJSTs) and designations to promote equitable distribution of benefits from environmental policies to disadvantaged communities (DACs). However, the methodological choices embedded in these tools, including the selection, weighting, and aggregation of environmental justice indicators, vary across EJSTs, and their implications for DAC designation outcomes are poorly understood. Here we systematically compare four EJSTs at the federal and state levels and show that these tools produce substantial variation in the DAC census tracts, with some tools emphasizing socioeconomic burdens while others prioritize environmental risks. Using quantitative regression models, we …

Fall 2026 Environmental Sciences Seminar Series, Jingyan Huang, Jingyan Huang
NRESS Seminars
This seminar presents a game-based social simulation of emergency response to water contamination, in which large language model (LLM) agents represent stakeholders with diverse roles, information, incentives, and constraints.
Through unfolding crisis scenario, the simulation explores how communication, coordination, and decision making shape collective outcomes under uncertainty. In this seminar, I will discuss the game’s design, the use of LLMs to model social interaction, and opportunities and limitations for research, training, and practical policy experimentation.

All UNH Survey Center Polls
Half of Massachusetts residents approve of incumbent Democratic Governor Maura Healey's overall job performance, but majorities disapprove of her handling of housing and the cost of living, the two most important problems cited by Massachusetts residents. However, Healey holds wide leads over both Michael Minogue, the frontrunner for the Republican gubernatorial nomination, and Brian Shortsleeve in the November general election.

First District Congressman Chris Pappas remains ahead in the race for the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate, but Karishma Manzur continues to close the gap, fueled by strong support from socialist and younger voters. Former Senator John E. Sununu continues to lead former Massachusetts Senator Scott Brown on the Republican side and is statistically tied with Pappas in a general election matchup. In the Democratic primary in New Hampshire's First Congressional District, Maura Sullivan and Stefany Shaheen are statistically tied, followed by Carleigh Beriont. Hollie Noveletsky and Anthony DiLorenzo are also statistically tied on the Republican side. In the Second …

New York Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez heads the field of prospective Democratic candidates in the 2028 New Hampshire presidential primary, followed closely by former Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg. Ocasio-Cortez draws much of her support from self-described socialists and progressives, while support for Buttigieg is spread about evenly among progressives, liberals, and moderates. Vice President JD Vance continues to lead on the Republican side, though Secretary of State Marco Rubio has closed the gap significantly over the past few months. Vance's support comes mainly from conservatives while Rubio gets more of his support from moderates and libertarians. Two-thirds of likely Republican …

Vermont Governor Phil Scott’s job approval ratings have declined in recent months, but he still leads his two potential Democratic challengers in the November election. A majority of likely Democratic primary voters are undecided about which Democratic candidate for governor they prefer, with progressives and socialists slightly favoring Amanda Janoo and moderates and liberals slightly favoring Aly Richards. Former Lieutenant Governor Molly Gray continues to lead the Democratic field to take on incumbent Republican John Rodgers. Gray and two other Democratic candidates lead Rodgers in prospective general election matchups. Gerald Malloy has built a clear lead over fellow Republican Mark …
Leadership In Higher Education Amid Demographic Shifts: Implications Of Campus Event Management, Marrissa J. Williams
Leadership In Higher Education Amid Demographic Shifts: Implications Of Campus Event Management, Marrissa J. Williams
M.S. in Leadership
This study focuses on how demographic shifts within higher education have influenced leadership practices, specifically within enrollment management and campus event programming. As student populations become increasingly diverse, institutions are challenged to change their recruitment, engagement, and support strategies to meet the needs of first-generation, low-income, and non-traditional learners. The research explores the role of leadership in shaping these responses, with a focus on how decisions related to admissions events, like campus visits, outreach initiatives, and multicultural programming, have contributed to student engagement and enrollment outcomes. Using a qualitative approach grounded in the analysis of peer-reviewed articles and case studies, …

M.S. in Leadership
Healthcare organizations operate in increasingly complex environments where effective communication, employee engagement, and patient safety are essential to organizational success. This study examines how leadership communication and organizational trust influence psychological safety and employee voice within healthcare organizations. Using a qualitative literature review, the study synthesizes scholarly research from healthcare leadership, organizational behavior, organizational psychology, healthcare management, and patient safety. The review explores major themes, including psychological safety, leadership communication, organizational trust, employee …

The Rise Of Options Contracts In Sports, The Post-Murphy Regulatory Conundrum, And Implications On Federalism, Scott Barboza
The Rise Of Options Contracts In Sports, The Post-Murphy Regulatory Conundrum, And Implications On Federalism, Scott Barboza
UNH Sports Law Review
The Supreme Court’s decision in Murphy v. N.C.A.A. dismantled the federal prohibition on state-authorized sports betting and returned its primary regulatory authority over to the states. Following Murphy, states adopted widely varying sports-betting regimes. At the same time, advances in financial technology and the growing popularity of prediction markets created a new form of event-based speculation operating outside the traditional sportsbook model. Platforms such as Kalshi began offering “yes-no” contracts tied to sporting outcomes through federally regulated exchanges overseen by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, framing such products not as wagers, but as financial derivatives governed by the Commodity Exchange …

New Playbook: How The Modern College Sports Legal Landscape Shapes The Women Athlete Experience And Future, Hannah Martin
UNH Sports Law Review
This Article examines how the emergence of Name, Image, and Likeness (“NIL”) rights and the approval of the House settlement have transformed the experience and future of women college athletes. For the first time in modern college athletics, athletes are permitted to profit from their personal brands through endorsements, sponsorships, social media promotions, and institutional revenue-sharing opportunities. These developments have created unprecedented visibility and economic opportunity for women athletes, particularly in sports such as basketball, gymnastics, and volleyball, where athletes have demonstrated significant commercial value and audience engagement. At the same time, the rapid commercialization of college sports has introduced …
Immigration Law Meets College Athlete Pay: How U.S. Immigration Law Excludes International College Athletes From The Compensation Revolution, Jeff Justiz
UNH Sports Law Review
When the House v. NCAA settlement authorized up to $20.5 million in annual direct revenue-sharing payments to college athletes, it resolved one century-old injustice and quietly created another. For the approximately 15,000 international student-athletes competing on F-1 visas, the same payments that enrich their domestic teammates may constitute unauthorized employment under federal immigration law, threatening deportation and visa revocation. This Note argues that the House settlement has exposed a structural collision between NCAA compensation policy and F-1 immigration doctrine that existing visa categories – the P-1A, the O-1, and various permanent-residency pathways – are individually incapable of resolving. Using Poa …

Institutional Influences And The Governance And Administration Of The Programa Produtor De Água Payment For Ecosystem Services Program In Brazil, Thomas G. Safford
Institutional Influences And The Governance And Administration Of The Programa Produtor De Água Payment For Ecosystem Services Program In Brazil, Thomas G. Safford
Faculty Publications
Payment-for-Ecosystem-Services (PES) has been promoted as an innovative approach to environmental governance capable of simultaneously advancing conservation and sustainable development objectives. While studies commonly assess the ecological and economic performance of PES schemes, less attention has been given to their organizational and administrative effectiveness. This study examines these governance dimensions of one of Latin America’s most prominent PES initiatives—the Water Producer Program (WPP) in Brazil. Drawing on a meta-synthesis of 125 publications, the analysis investigates how regulative, normative, and cultural-cognitive institutional forces shaped WPP implementation. Guided by neo-institutional theory and institutional bricolage, findings show that WPP governance operated through hybrid …
