Biomass burning (BB) affects air quality and climate by releasing large quantities of gaseous and particulate pollutants into the atmosphere. Photochemical processing during daylight transforms these emissions, influencing their overall environmental impact. Accurately quantifying the photochemical drivers, namely actinic flux and photolysis frequencies, is crucial to constraining this chemistry. However, the complex radiative transfer within BB plumes presents a significant challenge for both direct observations and numerical models.

This study introduces an expanded version of the 1D VLIDORT-QS radiative transfer (RT) model, named VLIDORT for photochemistry (VPC). VPC is designed for photochemical and remote sensing applications, particularly in BB plumes …

Scanning Probe Microscopy Studies Of Petroleum Chemistry: Substrate-Dependent Catalytic Properties Of Mos2 And Automating Scanning Probe Microscopy With Machine Learning, Steven Arias May 2023

Scanning Probe Microscopy Studies Of Petroleum Chemistry: Substrate-Dependent Catalytic Properties Of Mos2 And Automating Scanning Probe Microscopy With Machine Learning, Steven Arias

Doctoral Dissertations

With the growth of the population, society’s energy demands are mostly reliant on petroleum products that come from the refining of crude oil. Most of these refining reactions have been developed through averaging spectroscopic techniques, but scientists do not know exactly what is happening in these processes at the nano and atomic levels. This information is crucial when designing an efficient refining process that produces petroleum products that emit fewer harmful gases when combusting. Scanning probe microscopy techniques have become a powerful tool to look into the chemical structures found in petroleum products, to understand catalytic reactions in refining processes, …

Nitrogen Dynamics And Retention In The River Network Of A Tropical Forest, Luquillo Mountains, Puerto Rico, Richard Brereton Jan 2017

Nitrogen Dynamics And Retention In The River Network Of A Tropical Forest, Luquillo Mountains, Puerto Rico, Richard Brereton

Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation identifies gaps in the scientific understanding of nutrient cycling, particularly nitrogen (N) cycling, in streams and riparian zones of tropical montane forests, and addresses several of those gaps with original field-based research using study watersheds in the Luquillo Mountains of Puerto Rico as the model system. The Luquillo Mountains have features typical of mature montane tropical forests, such as high background N concentrations in streams and groundwater relative to streams in other biomes. As a USDA Forest Service Experimental Forest, the Luquillo Mountains are accessible to researchers and have abundant monitoring and experimental datasets from which to build …

Synthesis Of Adjacent-Bridged Benzo-Annelated Cyclam And Studies Of Mono- And Di-Benzo-Annelated Cyclam Derivatives, Amanuel B. Ghidey Jan 2013

Synthesis Of Adjacent-Bridged Benzo-Annelated Cyclam And Studies Of Mono- And Di-Benzo-Annelated Cyclam Derivatives, Amanuel B. Ghidey

Master's Theses and Capstones

A new synthetic methodology for the preparation of a novel adjacent-bridged benzoannelated cyclam is presented. This methodology utilizes reductive ring expansion followed by deallylation to give the desired adjacent-bridged benzo-annelated cyclam. This novel ligand is designed to complex metal cations with a trans coordination geometry. Derivatives of this ligand can be prepared by attaching pendant arms on the nitrogens which can aid as coordinating arms and linkers for potential use of this ligand as bifunctional chelator (BFC).

Coupling chemistry studies have been carried out in an attempt to increase the lipophilicity of a dibenzo-annelated tetracyclic bisaminal and to functionalize at …

Earth Sciences

Chemical data from ground stations in Asia and the North Pacific are compared with data from the DC-8 aircraft collected during the Pacific Exploratory Measurements in the Western Pacific Ocean (PEM-West B) mission. Ground station sampling took place on Hong Kong, Taiwan, Okinawa, and Cheju; and at three Pacific islands, Shemya, Midway, and Oahu. Aircraft samples were collected during 19 flights, most over the western North Pacific. Aluminum was used as an indicator of mineral aerosol, and even though the aircraft did sample Asian dust, strong dust storms were not encountered. The frequency distribution for non-sea-salt sulfate (nss SO4 …

Chemical Species Spatial Distribution And Relationship To Elevation And Snow Accumulation Rate Over The Greenland Ice Sheet, Qinzhao Yang, Paul A. Mayewski, E. Linder, Sallie I. Whitlow, Mark S. Twickler Aug 1996

Chemical Species Spatial Distribution And Relationship To Elevation And Snow Accumulation Rate Over The Greenland Ice Sheet, Qinzhao Yang, Paul A. Mayewski, E. Linder, Sallie I. Whitlow, Mark S. Twickler

Faculty Publications

Major chemical species (Cl−, NO−3, SO2−4, Na+, K+, Mg2+, Ca2+) from 24 snowpits (sampled at a resolution of 3 cm, total 2995 samples) collected from northern, central, and southern Greenland were used for this investigation. The annual and seasonal (winter and summer) concentration of each chemical species was calculated and used to study the spatial distribution of chemical species over the central portion of the Greenland Ice Sheet. A two‐sided t‐distribution test (α = 0.05) suggests that concentrations of major chemical species in snow do not vary significantly over this portion of central Greenland. The relationship between chemical concentration and …

Snow And Ice Chemistry Study Of The Greenland Ice Sheet, Qinzhao Yang Jan 1996

Snow And Ice Chemistry Study Of The Greenland Ice Sheet, Qinzhao Yang

Doctoral Dissertations

The Greenland ice sheet preserves high resolution records of environmental and climate change spanning seasons to hundreds and thousands of years. In this study, we utilize major chemical species measurements of surface snowpit samples and ice cores collected at GISP2, 20D, Mount Logan, and Sentik Glacier to investigate major chemical species spatial distribution, temporal variations, and possible sources for the major chemical species in these ice cores.

A two-sided t-distribution test (a = 0.05) was applied for the study of major chemical species spatial distribution over a portion of central Greenland. The results suggest that concentrations of major chemical species …

Global Perspective Of Nitrate Flux In Ice Cores, Qinzhao Yang, Paul A. Mayewski, Sallie I. Whitlow, Mark S. Twickler, Michael Morrison, R. Talbot, Jack E. Dibb, Ernst Linder Mar 1995

Global Perspective Of Nitrate Flux In Ice Cores, Qinzhao Yang, Paul A. Mayewski, Sallie I. Whitlow, Mark S. Twickler, Michael Morrison, R. Talbot, Jack E. Dibb, Ernst Linder

Earth Sciences

The relationships between the concentration and the flux of chemical species (Cl-, NO3 - , SO42-, Na +, K + , NH4 + , Mg 2+ , Ca 2+) versus snow accumulation rate were examined at GISP2 and 20D in Greenland, Mount Logan from the St. Elias Range, Yukon Territory, Canada, and Sentik Glacier from the northwest end of the Zanskar Range in the Indian Himalayas. At all sites, only nitrate flux is significantly (a = 0.05) related to snow accumulation rate. Of all the chemical series, only nitrate concentration data are normally distributed. Therefore we suggest that nitrate concentration …

Hydrological Investigations At Biafo Glacier, Karakoram Range, Himalaya; An Important Source Of Water For The Indus River, K Hewitt, Cameron P. Wake, G J. Young, C David

Earth Sciences

Over 80% of the flow of the Upper Indus River is derived from less than 20% of its area: essentially from zones of heavy snowfall and glacierized basins above 3500 m elevation. The trans-Himalaya n contribution comes largely from an area of some 20000 km2 of glacierized basins, mostly along the axis of the Greater Karakoram range and especially from 20-30 of the largest glacier basins. Very few glaciological investigations have so far been undertaken in this the major glacierized region of Central Asia. Biafo Glacier, one of the largest of the Karakoram glaciers, drains south-eastwards from the central Karakoram …
