Exploring H.Pylori Seropositivity As A Risk Factor For Type 2 Diabetes, Virginia Chaidez, Yumou Qiu

Background: In the US, the percentage of adults with diagnosed diabetes are higher in members of racial and ethnic minority groups compared to non-Latino Whites. Understanding why such disparities exist has been less forthcoming.

Methods: Secondary data analysis was conducted using the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 1999-2000 cross-sectional data.

Results: H.pylori seropositivity was highest in Mexican Americans (43.7%), lowest in non-Hispanic Whites (18.1%). Diabetes was highest in non-Hispanic Blacks (5.9%); lowest in non-Hispanic whites (4.3%). H.pylori seropositivity was associated with greater likelihood of having type 2 diabetes (1.927, 95% CI 1.142, 3.257) compared to H.pylori negative in …

This study was a content analysis of Las Vegas television news ( N = 1,145) and was designed to determine whether the potential exists for media consumers in the Las Vegas market to become fearful due to the overrepresentation of crime committed by Black offenders. One research question and two hypotheses were generated for this study. Research question one asked if there was an inverse relationship existing between media reports of index crimes and actual data offered by the State of Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles and Public Safety, and was supported. The persistence of wage differences between blacks and whites has provided economists a perplexing topic for debate. It has been proposed that this gap can be attributed in great part to a disparity in educational attainment between the two groups. This study looks specifically at whether a college degree diminishes the wage differential. The empirical findings suggest that although a higher level of education increases the average wage for both blacks and whites it does not diminish the wage differential between the two groups. In this thesis, the rhetoric surrounding President Clinton's announcement will be compared to the rhetoric surrounding President Truman's order for racial integration of the armed services. These significant presidential announcements, while seemingly unrelated, changed the focus of national debate on two controversial issues. To determine what similarities and differences exist in the rhetoric surrounding the two events I will compare the events using analog criticism (a method of comparing and contrasting two rhetorical events) as the framework for the study. Government studies and newspaper accounts of both rhetorical events will be relied upon to contrast and compare the rhetorical events.
