An Exploratory Study Of Adolescents' Communicative A Ttitudes, Perceptions Of Behavior, And Life Change Events As Potential Factors In Development Of Essential Hypertension, Susan Heath Falvo

Student Work

In the past 50 years, social scientists and medical researchers have explored many aspects of human behavior and the psyche which appeared related to various physical disorders. This endeavor evolved into a discipline known as "psychosomatic medicine." Methodologies and perspectives within this discipline have varied widely over the years and many studies have yielded Inconclusive findings (Lipowski, 1977; Lazarus, 1980). However, a review of the psychosomatic literature reveals a t least one common dimension: the nature of one's face-to-face transactions is vitally linked to one's physical well-being.

One medical researcher who described the relationship between human Interaction and physiological processes …

Evaluating Student Volunteer And Service-Learning Programs: A Casebook For Practitioners, Michele Whitham, Eric C. Little, Michael Whitesage, Richard Cone, Jane Szuru Permal, Jack Knott, Roy A. Weaver, James H. Mcelhinney, Joyce K. Allen, Roger Henry, Terrence J. Mctaggart, Janet Warnert

Evaluation/Reflection

Today, evaluation concepts and methods are widely available to those who plan and administer student volunteer programs. Unfortunately, however, evaluation has all too often been carried out-and written about-in ways that have robbed it of its usefulness to people dealing with the realities of day-to-day program operation. Evaluation has thus acquired the reputation among practitioners of being too complex, too costly, too time-consuming, even too threatening to be of much practical value.

Publications

This issue of Review of Applied Urban Research features "Employment of Black and Hispanic Police Officers," by Sam Walker.

Employment of black and Hispanic police officers in the 50 largest cities in the United States falls short of desirable levels. For both racial groups, employment levels are only half of a hypothetical ideal level. Only two of 50 police departments have achieved a high level of equal employment opportunity compliance with respect to both racial groups. Several police departments have made significant progress in minority employment in recent years, either as a result of voluntary or court-ordered affirmative action plans. …

Computers And Small Local Governments: Uses And Users, Donald F. Norris

Publications

This article examines the adoption and use of computer technology by cities under 50,000 and counties under 100,000 in seven plains and mountain states. Smaller local governments were found to lag considerably behind their larger counterparts in computer adoption and extent of use. However, pat terns of use were not substantially different, with basic "housekeeping" functions being the most frequently automated.

Computer adoption was associated with size, government form and type, and metropolitan status. No relationship was found between financial status and computer adoption. Most governments used in-house computers, and most of these systems were minicomputers. The frequency of microcomputer …

Reproduction And Morphology Of Two Annual Taxa Of Sporobolus (Poaceae)., Elvera W. Skokan Aug 1983

Reproduction And Morphology Of Two Annual Taxa Of Sporobolus (Poaceae)., Elvera W. Skokan

Student Work

Morphology and reproduction were studied in two annual taxa of Sporobolus (Poaceae) at eight locations in eastern Nebraska. Estimated percent cleistogamy was 93.2% in S. neglectus and 83.8% in S. vaginiflorus in specimens collected throughout the 1982 growing season. Anthers of cleistogamous florets were smaller in size and lower in number than anthers of chasmogamous florets. Pollen-ovule ratios were significantly lower in cleistogamous than in chasmogamous florets and cleistogamous florets showed precocious development. Agamospermous reproduction may also be present in the taxa. The lack of intermediate forms between the two taxa in the locations studied may be attributable to the …

Comparison Of Responses To Weight Training In Prepubescent And Adult Males, Margaret M. Sailors Jul 1983

Comparison Of Responses To Weight Training In Prepubescent And Adult Males, Margaret M. Sailors

Student Work

The purpose of this study was to compare the differences in muscular strength/endurance between prepubescent and adult males. Specifically, gains via free weights along with girths, weight, skeletal widths, skinfolds, and somatotype changes were compared between the two groups before and after an eight week weight training program. Both groups contained both control and training subjects in order to determine changes attributable to training. Differences between the mean gains in performance, after adjusting for inital differences, were analyzed to shed some light on effects of puberty.

A review of literature on multidisciplinary teams indicates problems in the teams' functioning center around four questions: (a) Who collects what information for the decision-making process? In the present paper focus is directed upon question (b). This study assessed the degree of redundancy between the General Reading Comprehension Core of the Test of Reading Comprehension: A Method for Assessing the Understanding of …

Comparison Of Responses To Weight Training In Prepubescent And Adult Males, Margaret M. Sailors Jul 1983

Comparison Of Responses To Weight Training In Prepubescent And Adult Males, Margaret M. Sailors

Student Work

The effect of overload training on adults has been considered for thousands of years. Centuries before Christ, Milo of Crotona carried a calf on his back daily until the animal was full-grown, resulting in one of the earliest accounts of the overload principle (Bergan & Scoles, 1979). Results of overload training on adults have been well documented (Tanner, 1952; Hellebrandt & Houtz, 1958; Berger,1962a; 1962b; Rasch & Pierson, 1963; Berger & Hardage, 1967; Stull & Clark, 1970; Leighton, Holmes, Benson, Wooten & Schmerer, 1967; Wilmore, 1975; Gettman, Ward & Hager, 1982). However, how overload affects children and adolescents is barely …

Vegetational Changes Under Isolated Juniperus Virginiana In An Eastern Nebraska Bluestem Prairie., Janet L. Gehring

Student Work

Changes in species composition of a Bluestem prairie were evaluated under isolated, 10-22 year old Juniperus virginiana (Eastern Red Cedar) in eastern Nebraska. Percent canopy cover was measured in full-canopy, canopy-edge, and open-canopy plots which were located along transects oriented to the cardinal compass directions. A total of 53 species were recorded. Andropogon scoparius and A. gerardii dominated open-canopy and canopy-edge plots; Poa pratensis and A. scoparius dominated full-canopy plots. Canopy cover of most prairie species decreased under full canopy but Poa pratensis and Carex spp. increased. There was a positive correlation between tree size and both the decrease of …
