A Nursing Education Intervention For Delirium Prevention, Sarah Eckles
A Nursing Education Intervention For Delirium Prevention, Sarah Eckles
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects: College of Nursing
Background
At a large, tertiary care hospital in the Midwest, it had been anecdotally noted that delirium or acute encephalopathy cases were increasing. Specifically, inpatient neurology consultations for delirium were on the rise. This data had been confirmed by hospital administration. Delirium has been identified as a well-known problem in elderly, hospitalized adults—most notably in elderly, postoperative adults. It can cause a cascade of additional complications for elderly patients. Delirium prevention is known to be the best method to combat delirium incidence. Prevention has been proven to occur by way of non-pharmacologic, early interventions by nursing. Bedside nursing staff must …
Central Nervous System Antiviral Pharmacology, Sean N. Avedissian
Central Nervous System Antiviral Pharmacology, Sean N. Avedissian
Theses & Dissertations
Soon after viral infection, viruses like Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and SARS-CoV-2 can disseminate throughout the body and establish reservoirs in the central nervous system (CNS). The persistence of viruses in cells of these reservoirs is a major obstacle to virus eradication. This is due to the abundance of cells/receptors that these viruses utilize to gain entry into cells found at these various reservoir sites. Consequently, these same anatomical sites also may be pharmacologic sanctuaries, as evidenced by concentrations of antiretroviral drugs (ARVs) and antivirals (AVs) that are lower in reservoirs than those in peripheral blood; in some cases, these …
Determining If Cx45 Acts As An Arrythmogenic Substrate In The Diseased Myocardium, Stephen R. Sobota
Determining If Cx45 Acts As An Arrythmogenic Substrate In The Diseased Myocardium, Stephen R. Sobota
Theses & Dissertations
Proper contraction of the heart relies on gap junction channels (GJCs) composed of Cx40 and Cx43 in the atrial and ventricular tissues which mediate electrical conductance in the working myocardium. Also expressed is Cx45, which is limited to the pacemaker system. Studies in diseased human hypertrophic cardiac tissue have shown expression of Cx45 and decrease of Cx43 in the myocardium. Cx43 and Cx45 in vitro form heterometric GJCs, where the channel characteristics (metabolite transfer, electrical conductance, etc.) resemble those of Cx45. There is little-to-no data showing whether GJCs composed of Cx43 and Cx45 in cardiac hypertrophy result in altered conductance. …

Epilepsy is a neurological disease leading to recurrent and unpredictable seizures. Patients can be diagnosed as focal onset, where the seizure focus resides in one hemisphere; generalized onset, where seizure foci reside in both hemispheres; or unknown onset. Anti-seizure medications are the first line of treatment, and those whose seizures cannot be controlled with medication are diagnosed with drug-resistant epilepsy (DRE). For patients diagnosed with focal onset epilepsy to achieve seizure freedom, surgical resection of the epileptogenic zone (EZ), the region of the brain that is both necessary and sufficient for initiating seizures, is required. The EZ is a theoretical …
The Interactions Of Centromeric Nucleosomes Elucidated By Atomic Force Microscopy, Shaun Filliaux
The Interactions Of Centromeric Nucleosomes Elucidated By Atomic Force Microscopy, Shaun Filliaux
Theses & Dissertations
Nucleosomes are the fundamental unit of compaction for DNA in the genome. These positively charged proteins have two main types of nucleosomes: canonical (H3 containing) and centromere (CENP-A containing). The compacting of DNA allows for DNA to fit into the nucleus of cells, but creates a barrier for DNA accessibility for operations such as replication or transcription. Centromeric chromatin is a subset of chromatin structure and governs chromosome segregation. Compared to the bulk chromosome, centromeres are composed of H3 and CENP-A nucleosomes in which H3 histones is replaced by its homolog CENP-A histone. This results in nucleosomes with different structures, …

Worldwide economic and medical improvements have led to profound demographic shifts towards an older overall population. Unfortunately, with older age comes a variety of neurological changes which act to decrease individual quality of life and independence. Since the advent of functional neuroimaging, investigation of age-related changes in neural activity has been of particular interest. However, changes in population-level neural dynamics with age remain poorly characterized. Herein, we utilized magnetoencephalography (MEG), comprehensive neuropsychological assessments, and advanced analytical techniques to investigate spectrally-specific changes in neural oscillatory activity in a healthy aging population. First, we examined age-related deficiencies in visual processing using a …
