The purpose of this prospective cohort pilot study was to investigate the association of the periodontal status and inflammatory markers from the gingival crevicular and wound fluid with the healing outcomes following tooth extraction. The central research hypothesis is that extraction sites and the adjacent teeth that exhibit increased markers of inflammation, or decreased growth factors, at baseline or 2 weeks will be associated with reduced healing outcomes observed radiographically 3 months following surgery. Cancer survivors report many debilitating symptoms associated with cancer and its treatments. About 30% will report long-term cancer-related fatigue (CRF) which often co-occurs with depressive symptoms, sleep disturbances, cognitive fatigue, and poor overall health-related quality of life. The underlying causes of these co-occurring symptoms have been related to systemic processes such as inflammation. Extracellular vesicles (EVs) contain systemic markers such as genetic and protein materials that inform about cell-to-cell interactions that influence immune signaling and inflammatory processing. The effects of methamphetamine (Meth) in the periphery are not well studied and a comprehensive investigation on the effects and molecular mechanism will give insight into why Meth users are at an increased risk of infections. For this reason, we use macrophages as a model for the immune system dysregulation seen in Meth abusers and also because macrophages are a long-lived cell that HIV infects and persists in.
