Disney And Critical Global Citizenship: Border Politics And Linguistic Decolonization In The Lion Guard, Gordana Lazić
Disney And Critical Global Citizenship: Border Politics And Linguistic Decolonization In The Lion Guard, Gordana Lazić
Dialogue: The Interdisciplinary Journal of Popular Culture and Pedagogy
In this essay, I analyze the Disney television series The Lion Guard as a site of public pedagogy and argue that the show fosters a form of critical global citizenship among young viewers. It does this, I further maintain, in two primary ways: the progressive treatment of and careful attention to immigration and border politics, and disruption of the hegemony of the English language. Through age-appropriate plot development and dialogue, The Lion Guard actively participates in public pedagogy urging future policy and decision-makers to develop critical global consciousness.

How Philip K. Dick Used The Unreliable Narrator To Transport Unwitting Acolytes, Michael Barros, Jordi Smith
How Philip K. Dick Used The Unreliable Narrator To Transport Unwitting Acolytes, Michael Barros, Jordi Smith
Dialogue: The Interdisciplinary Journal of Popular Culture and Pedagogy
This essay examines the use of the unreliable narrator to transport the reader into narrative worlds, specifically in Philip K. Dick's fiction. By exploring the phenomenon of narrative transportation and the role of emotions in engagement with fiction, we argue that Dick's use of the unreliable narrator significantly engages and transports readers into his narrative worlds. Subsequently, we contend that his belief in the fundamental reality of those worlds is effectively positioning himself as a gatekeeper and mediator between the narrative world and the real world, which sets him, in his mind, as a prophet, using fiction as a tool …
Evaluating The Motivations Of Participants In Online Equine Extension Courses, Sarah Vos
Evaluating The Motivations Of Participants In Online Equine Extension Courses, Sarah Vos
Department of Animal Science: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Traditional program evaluations emphasize participant demographics, knowledge gain, behavior change, and program impact. However, evaluating participant motivation can provide addition insight into why participants enroll in extension programs and help explain participant engagement and persistence throughout a program. The purpose of this study was to evaluate participant motivation in two online equine extension courses and examine potential relationships between motivation, demographics, and course delivery method, and describe participant engagement in Virtual Horse Judging Camp (VHJC). This cross-sectional study utilized convenience sampling of participants in two online equine extension courses, Horse Adult Leader Training and Educational Resource (HALTER) and VHJC. The …
Navigating Queer Identities In Rural Communities: The Role Of Social Support In Shaping Lgbq+ Adolescents’ Identity Development, Michaela Elaine Pierson
Navigating Queer Identities In Rural Communities: The Role Of Social Support In Shaping Lgbq+ Adolescents’ Identity Development, Michaela Elaine Pierson
Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–
Adolescents who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, or queer (LGBQ+) develop their identities within complex social contexts. In rural settings, limited access to affirming resources and greater exposure to stigma may further shape identity development. Guided by social ecological and minority stress theories, this study examined whether perceived family and friend support predict identity affirmation and internalized homonegativity among rural LGBQ+ adolescents. Participants included 53 adolescents ages 13 to 18 drawn from a larger dataset. Group differences across demographic variables were examined, and regression analyses were used to evaluate the predictive role of family and friend support. No significant group …

Investigating The Links Between Parent Math Anxiety, Parenting Behaviors, And Child Math Achievement And Math Anxiety In Middle Childhood, Kimia Akhavein
Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–
Existing research indicates that parents’ math anxiety is a robust predictor of children’s math achievement and math anxiety. The current dissertation study moved the literature forward by examining the transmission of parents’ math anxiety to children’s math achievement and math anxiety via autonomy-supportive and controlling parenting behaviors using an observational coding scheme during a homework help task when children were in second grade. The first research aim examined if parents’ autonomy supportive and controlling behaviors mediated the link between parents’ math anxiety and children’s math achievement and math anxiety one year later. The second research aim examined whether parents’ emotion …

Exploring The Role Of Community Leaders In Building Community Resilience Against Climate Disasters: A Case Study Of A Rural Climate Vulnerable Community, Daniel Tinyogtaa Adama
Exploring The Role Of Community Leaders In Building Community Resilience Against Climate Disasters: A Case Study Of A Rural Climate Vulnerable Community, Daniel Tinyogtaa Adama
Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–
Community resilience is widely recognized as a participatory approach to managing climate disasters. However, limited empirical research specifically examines how community leaders carry out the work of building that resilience in rural, climate-vulnerable communities. This qualitative case study addressed that issue by exploring the role of community leaders in building resilience against climate disasters in a rural, climate-vulnerable Midwestern community with a history of such events. Guided by three research questions, the study investigated how leaders identified and leveraged local assets and social networks, the strategies they used to promote collaboration, communication, and shared decision-making, and how their roles and …
Beyond The Cycle: How Menstruation Influences Gender Identity And Well-Being In Binary And Non-Binary Adults, Rin Nguyen
Beyond The Cycle: How Menstruation Influences Gender Identity And Well-Being In Binary And Non-Binary Adults, Rin Nguyen
Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–
Approximately 1.8 billion people worldwide menstruate, including transgender and gender-diverse (TGD) people, yet their experiences remain underrepresented in research. Given that menstruation can affect gender alignment and psychological well-being, understanding its impact on TGD people is critical. Gender congruence, or alignment between one’s gender identity and expression, is a key factor influencing well-being, with research linking it to reduced depression and anxiety. Furthermore, emerging research on gender euphoria, the joy experienced when gender congruence is experienced, suggests it may serve as a protective factor for mental health and well-being. Gender euphoria has been associated with reduced psychological distress and increased …
“I Never Really Thought That Would Be Something To Talk About With My Doctor”: Developing A Theory-Led Decision Aid For College Students’ Substance Use Disclosure In Healthcare, Hayley Stahl
Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–
College students who use drugs face compounding barriers to disclosing substance use to healthcare providers, including uncertainty about health consequences and stigma-driven identity concerns. Existing disclosure tools address neither barrier in an integrated fashion. This explanatory sequential mixed-methods study examined how constructs from the Theory of Motivated Information Management (TMIM; Afifi & Weiner, 2004) and Stigma Management Communication (SMC; Meisenbach, 2010) theory suggest factors influencing substance use disclosure among college students and shape their lived disclosure experiences. In Study 1, simultaneous-entry multiple regression analyses revealed that communication efficacy was associated with information seeking, perceived benefits of disclosure were linked to …
The Role Of Cross-Cultural Connections In Leadership Identity Development: From Entry To Embodiment, Jennifer Okoliko
The Role Of Cross-Cultural Connections In Leadership Identity Development: From Entry To Embodiment, Jennifer Okoliko
Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–
Leadership identity development has received considerable attention in the literature, but most of what we know comes from studies focused on students in formal leadership programs or on the mentee’s side of mentoring relationships. Less understood is the mentor's leadership identity development journey and the role of culture in that process.
This study explores how mentors from low power distance cultural backgrounds who engaged with mentees from high power distance cultural backgrounds interpreted the impact of those experiences on their leadership identity development.
Using Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis (IPA), I conducted two semi-structured interviews with ten participants recruited from different formal …
Tales Of The Empathic Support Provider: How Emerging Adult Women Make Sense Of Providing Empathic Support To Female Friends, Emma R. Eslinger
Tales Of The Empathic Support Provider: How Emerging Adult Women Make Sense Of Providing Empathic Support To Female Friends, Emma R. Eslinger
Department of Communication Studies: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The current study explored the stories and reflections of 33 emerging adult women who made sense of their empathic support provider (ESP) identity in the context of female friendships. From the standpoint of the retrospective storytelling heuristic, within communicated narrative sense-making theory, participants told stories about their ESP identity, including how they provide support to others and reflect on the benefits of drawbacks of serving in this role (CNSM, Koenig Kellas, 2022). Under Proposition 1 of CNSM theory, meanings, values, and beliefs (MVBs) that ESP women expressed in this role were depicted as key takeaways gathered. Findings illuminated how ESP …
Communication And Prosocialization: Understanding The Development Of Inclusive Morality, Hannah Smith
Communication And Prosocialization: Understanding The Development Of Inclusive Morality, Hannah Smith
Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–
Relationships between individuals from different social or cultural groups are often impacted by ingroup favoritism, outgroup bias, and structural inequity determined by a person's social and cultural identities. Recognizing this, scholars and practitioners for the last few decades have attempted to address this by creating interventions, workshops, and other applied programs that aim to reduce this intergroup bias and ameliorate the negative consequences. The current dissertation complements this body of applied scholarship by shifting the focus from reducing and minimizing bias to focusing on processes that lead to a more prosocial and inclusive worldview.
The overall aim is to understand …
Pinochet’S Upswing: The Demise Of A Democratic Society In Chile, Jacob Behnk
Pinochet’S Upswing: The Demise Of A Democratic Society In Chile, Jacob Behnk
Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)
In the United States, we tend to view democracy as an inviolable tenet of political life. Our nation’s founding is even romanticized as a heroic fight for liberty against the wicked tyranny of the British monarchy. It is unthinkable that democracy could ever be destroyed, let alone have the citizens cheer on those who engineer its destruction—yet this is the very situation that Chile found itself regarding Augusto Pinochet, a brutal dictator who ruled the country with an iron fist from 1973 to 1990. Pinochet would be voted out of power in a 1988 plebiscite, but still managed to win …

The Process Of Alcohol-Involved Sexual Assault Disclosure: Examining Disclosure Content And Reactions From Informal Supports, Madison Elle Edwards
The Process Of Alcohol-Involved Sexual Assault Disclosure: Examining Disclosure Content And Reactions From Informal Supports, Madison Elle Edwards
Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–
Alcohol-involved sexual violence (SV), in which unwanted sexual contact is attempted or obtained without consent during or after the victim’s alcohol use is a major public health issue among young women. Research consistently shows that alcohol-involved SV can have particularly harmful mental and physical health consequences. Moreover, survivors who were drinking are more likely to receive negative reactions (e.g., blame, minimization) when they disclose their SV experiences to informal supports (e.g., friends, family). These negative reactions are consistently linked to negative psychosocial outcomes. However, little research on negative disclosure reactions has examined the content of survivors’ disclosures. The present study …

The Relationships Between Perceived Quality Of Sexual Educational Experiences From Multiple Sources And Sexual Wellbeing Outcomes In A Sample Of U.S. College Women, Alex Diede
Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–
Sexual education comes from many sources and is important for sexual wellbeing. Much of the research on relationships between sexual education and sexual wellbeing has examined specific sources (e.g., schools or parents) and outcomes related to sexual risk-reduction, such as contraceptive use (e.g., Lameiras-Fernández et al., 2021; Widman et al., 2016). Less is known about the relationships between sexual education and positive sexual wellbeing outcomes. This study used a sample of college women to examine the relationships between the perceived quality of sexual education before college from four sources (i.e., caregivers, school, peers, self) and sexual wellbeing outcomes, including ego-focused …

Increasing Fifth-Grade Students’ Motivation To Read Through The Use Of Thematic Units, Irina Anatolyevna Belikova Erickson
Increasing Fifth-Grade Students’ Motivation To Read Through The Use Of Thematic Units, Irina Anatolyevna Belikova Erickson
Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–
Elementary students’ motivation to read decreases as they advance to upper elementary grades. Reading motivation impacts students’ reading achievement. Only 31% of American fourth-grade students demonstrated proficiency on NAEP, the nation’s report card, in 2024. A need for research-based instructional strategies exists, as teachers can directly affect students’ motivation to read with carefully selected interventions. This action research study examined thematic units as an instructional intervention. In their instructional implementation of thematic units, teachers relied on the constructs of autonomy, competence, and relatedness originated from the Self-Determination Theory (SDT) (Deci & Ryan, 1985; Ryan & Deci, 2017). Satisfying the basic …
Beyond Borders: Educator Identity Development Through Sustained Intercultural Engagement In Rotary Youth Exchange, Lisa L. Waechter-Cass
Beyond Borders: Educator Identity Development Through Sustained Intercultural Engagement In Rotary Youth Exchange, Lisa L. Waechter-Cass
Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–
This qualitative study employed collaborative narrative inquiry, informed by autoethnographic reflection, to examine how sustained intercultural engagement through Rotary Youth Exchange (RYE) shaped my evolving educator identity, self-efficacy, and enactment of globally responsive teaching within a rural elementary classroom. Guided by McAdams’ Narrative Identity Theory and supported by Bandura’s Self-Efficacy Theory, the study explored how long-term intercultural relationships and reflective dialogue influenced my understanding of teaching, learning, belonging, and global citizenship.
Data sources included reflexive journals, semi-structured interviews with former Rotary Youth Exchange students with whom I developed enduring family relationships through hosting experiences, and personal and educational artifacts …

Increasing Students’ Self-Efficacy In Consuming, Conducting, And Disseminating Neuroimaging Research: Experiences From Teaching Edps 991: Social And Affective Neuroscience, Isabella Starling Alves
UNL Faculty Course Portfolios
Social and emotional factors are critical for learning, being core aspects of the educational psychology curricula. Recently, neuroimaging has emerged as a powerful tool to comprehend the neurobiological factors underlying these factors. Yet, many educational psychologists have low familiarity with neuroscience research. The course EDPS 991: Social and Affective Neuroscience, from the Department of Educational Psychology at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, emerges in this context, training educational psychology graduate students to consume, conduct, and disseminate findings about how the brain relates to socioemotional processes. One challenge related to the course is that many students feel anxious about learning the neuroimaging …
The Effect Of Partisan Group-Based Emotions On Immigration Attitudes, Samantha Michelle Wiener
The Effect Of Partisan Group-Based Emotions On Immigration Attitudes, Samantha Michelle Wiener
Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–
This dissertation utilized a cognitive appraisal theory of emotion perspective to study the role of partisan group-based emotion in immigration attitude formation to better understand partisan immigration attitudes and preferences in the United States. Across one correlational and two experimental studies, this research showed that partisan group-based emotions predicted immigration attitudes significantly distinctly than do individual-level emotions. The first and third papers showed that group-based emotions predicted immigration attitudes. The second highlighted the role that individual-level empathy plays in immigration preferences. Taken together, to more fully understand how Americans form attitudes towards immigrants and immigration, researchers must account for both …
Interparental Relationship Quality Reduces Parental Stress And Subsequent Family Dysfunction Across Pregnancy And Early Childhood, Rachel Clara-Beth Beck
Interparental Relationship Quality Reduces Parental Stress And Subsequent Family Dysfunction Across Pregnancy And Early Childhood, Rachel Clara-Beth Beck
Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–
In this multiple paper dissertation, I found that a higher quality interparental relationship, characterized by more emotional intimacy, support, responsiveness and better conflict management skills, plays a key role in reducing stress and its subsequent impact on family dynamics. Aims and hypotheses were tested using longitudinal data collected from mixed-sex couples during the pregnancy-postpartum transition and into early childhood. In study #1, higher quality interparental support during pregnancy was associated with lower postpartum stress which, in turn, predicted fewer parent–infant bonding impairments. In study #2, a mutually responsive orientation in the couple relationship during pregnancy interacted with intrapersonal regulatory resources …
Practicing A Pedagogy Of Slow Resistance In The Writing Classroom, Kathleen Rose Dillon
Practicing A Pedagogy Of Slow Resistance In The Writing Classroom, Kathleen Rose Dillon
Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–
Especially during and following the ‘lockdown era’ of the COVID-19 pandemic, college writing instructors have sought ways to mitigate the harms of neoliberal and capitalist practices in the academy and writing classroom. Incorporating elements of Slow Pedagogy, Disability Studies, Anti-Capitalist Composition, and Participatory Action Research methodology, this dissertation argues for practicing a Pedagogy of Slow Resistance, centering co-creation and relationship-building, to resist neoliberal and capitalist values, and promote student belonging and well-being. This dissertation highlights a classroom study in which two undergraduate students in the TRIO program, which serves students who are first in their family to go to college, …
The Value Of Difficulty In Engineering Education To Professional Work Experience Of Early Career Engineers: A Multiple Case Study, Nosakhare Iyobosa Idiaghe
The Value Of Difficulty In Engineering Education To Professional Work Experience Of Early Career Engineers: A Multiple Case Study, Nosakhare Iyobosa Idiaghe
Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–
Engineering education has long been characterized by rigor, intensity, and selective sorting, conditions often justified as necessary for producing capable engineers. Yet, despite the widespread assumption that academic hardship prepares students for professional practice, relatively little empirical work has examined how graduates themselves interpret the value of these difficult experiences once they enter the workforce. This dissertation addresses that gap by investigating how early-career engineers make sense of the difficulty encountered in their undergraduate education and how those experiences compare to the challenges of engineering practice.
Using a qualitative multiple‑case study design, the research draws on semi‑structured interviews with eight …
Leading While Black: An Examination Of The Black Supervisor Experience Overseeing White Subordinates In Higher Education, Colette Marie Tobias
Leading While Black: An Examination Of The Black Supervisor Experience Overseeing White Subordinates In Higher Education, Colette Marie Tobias
Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–
This study examines how systemic racism and social capital hierarchies shape the supervisory experiences of Black supervisors. While existing literature has explored leadership and race, it has not fully examined how systemic racism shape Black supervisors’ experiences or how social capital hierarchies play into the behavioral responses of white subordinates. This study addresses that gap by centering the lived experiences of Black supervisors within higher education.
Grounded in narrative inquiry, this research focuses on how participants make meaning of their experiences through their stories. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews and reflective journals with 19 Black supervisors who had at …
