We search for Higgs bosons produced in association with a massive vector boson in 91 ± 7 pb^-1 of pp̅ collisions at √s =1.8 TeV recorded by the Collider Detector at Fermilab. We assume the Higgs scalar H⁰ decays to a bb̅ pair with branching ratio β, and we consider the hadronic decays of the vector boson V (W or Z). Observations are consistent with background expectations. We place 95% confidence level upper limits on σ (pp̅→H⁰V) β as a function of the scalar mass (MH⁰) …

Search For The Decays BS0,BD0 → E±Μ± And Pati-Salam Leptoquarks, F. Abe, Kenneth A. Bloom, Collider Detector At Fermilab Collaboration

We have searched for the decays B_s⁰→ e^±μ^± and B_d⁰ → e^±μ^± using a 102 pb^-1 data sample of pp̅ collisions at √s =1.8 TeV collected with the Collider Detector at Fermilab. We set upper limits on the branching fractions of Ɓ(B_s⁰ → e^±μ^±) < 6.1(8.2) X 10^-6 and Ɓ(B_d⁰ → e^±μ^±) < 3.5(4.5) X 10^-6 at 90(95)% confidence level. Using these limits, we set lower bounds on the corresponding Pati-Salam leptoquark masses and find that M_LQ(B …

Density Of Zeros On The Lee-Yang Circle Obtained From Magnetization Data Of A Two-Dimensional Ising Ferromagnet, Christian Binek

In order to provide experimental access to the statistical theory of Lee and Yang [Phys. Rev. 87, 410 (1952)] the density function g(θ) of zeros on the Lee-Yang circle has been determined for the first time by analyzing isothermal magnetization data m(H) of the Ising ferromagnet FeCl₂ in axial magnetic fields H at temperatures 34≤T≤99 K. The validity of our approach is demonstrated by the perfect agreement of magnetic specific heat data as calculated from g(θ) and m(H) via Maxwell's relation. This study examines how experiences in the family domain may magnify or mitigate experiences in the peer domain, and how processes in both milieus may influence adolescent substance use. The data derived from 666 European American mother-adolescent dyads and 510 European American father-adolescent dyads. Consistent with individuation-connectedness theory, mothers’ responsiveness lessened their adolescents’ orientation to peers, which, in turn, reduced adolescent substance use. This process was moderated by maternal values regarding adolescent alcohol use; that is, the relation of maternal responsiveness to adolescent substance use depended on the extent of maternal approval or disapproval of adolescent alcohol use. In this project we study new nanocrystalline and nanocomposite structures that have high potential for permanent-magnet development. These materials, which can be synthesized to have either very high or intermediate coercivities, have many applications in electric power, transportation, and information-storage industries. There is great interest in further development of understanding and application of these materials. Following are brief discussions of recent research highlights for the present grant.

Classical Thomson scattering—the scattering of low-intensity light by electrons—is a linear process, in that it does not change the frequency of the radiation; moreover, the magnetic-field component of light is not involved. But if the light intensity is extremely high (~10¹⁸ Wcm^–2), the electrons oscillate during the scattering process with velocities approaching the speed of light. In this relativistic regime, the effect of the magnetic and electric fields on the electron motion should become comparable, and the effective electron mass will increase. Consequently, electrons in such high fields are predicted to quiver nonlinearly, moving in figure-eight patterns …

Laser light is a convenient way of transporting both electric and magnetic fields. When an electron encounters light, however, it is usually the electric field that does the talking; the magnetic part of light is less influential since its effect on the electron is proportional to the electron's speed as a fraction of the speed of light (c). In new experiments at the University of Michigan this is all changed since the intensity of the laser light used is so great (a terawatt of power, compared to a milliwatt for a laser in a CD player) that the electrons in …

Isolated DNA fragments encoding a Rhodospirillum rubrum (ATCC 25903) polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) synthase, or biologically functional equivalents thereof, are provided. Also provided is the deduced amino acid sequence of the R. rubrum PHA synthase. These molecules are useful in the production of PHAs in bacteria and plants.

Examination of the distribution of nine-banded armadillo in Nebraska reveals that these animals may be entering the state from two directions. The animals in Chase, Dundy, and Furnas counties appear to be closely associated with the Republican River and its tributaries and probably reached the state along these riparian habitats from northwestern Kansas and northeastern Colorado. Records in the central and eastern part of Nebraska are not closely tied to one river system. For the specimen from Ord to have followed watercourses, it would have needed to follow the Big or Little Blue rivers, crossed to the Platte River, and …

Events With A Rapidity Gap Between Jets In P̅P Collisions At √S = 630 Gev, F. Abe, Kenneth A. Bloom, Collider Detector At Fermilab Collaboration

We report a measurement of the fraction of dijet events with a rapidity gap between jets produced by color-singlet exchange in p̅p collisions at √s =630 GeV at the Fermilab Tevatron. In events with two jets of transverse energy E_T^jet > 8 GeV, pseudorapidity in the range 1.8 <|η^jet | < 3.5 and η₁ η₂ < 0, the color-singlet exchange fraction is found to be R=[2.7 ± 0.7(stat) ± 0.6(syst)]%. Comparisons are made with results obtained at √s =1800 GeV and with theoretical expectations.

This analysis marks the first time that the black threat thesis posited in 1949 by V. 0. Key, Jr. has been examined by employing a black versus white head-to-head election. This study tests the black threat thesis in the 1995 Louisiana gubernatorial run-off election. The unit of analysis is the parish (same as county) and the primary data sources used in this analysis include election returns by parish, turnout data by race by parish and demographic and socio-economic variables for parishes taken from the United States Census. This study was undertaken to determine the optimum pH, temperature and glycerol feed rate for the production of recombinant hookworm (Ancylostoma caninum) anticoagulant peptide (rAcAP-5) by Pichia pastoris using response surface methodology (RSM). A central composite design was used as an experimental design for allocation of treatment combinations in three blocks. The variables selected for study were pH, temperature and glycerol feed rate. pH was the most important variable affecting yield, specific yield and specific activity of rAcAP-5. Glycerol feed rate had a significant effect on the specific activity of rAcAP-5 (% of total secreted protein) while temperature did not …

As part of an extensive multi-wavelength monitoring campaign, the International Ultraviolet Explorer satellite was used to observe the broad-line radio galaxy 3C 390.3 during the period 1994 December 31-1996 March 5. Spectra were obtained every 6È10 days. The UV continuum varied by a factor of 7 through the campaign, while the broad emission lines varied by factors of 2È5. Unlike previously monitored Seyfert 1 galaxies, in which the X-ray continuum generally varies with a larger amplitude than the UV, in 3C 390.3 the UV continuum light curve is similar in both amplitude and shape to the X-ray light curve observed …

Static-Electric-Field-Induced, High-Energy Plateau For Scattered X-Ray Photons In Laser-Assisted, X-Ray–Atom Scattering, Dejan B. Miloševic, Anthony F. Starace

We consider scattering of x rays by H atoms in the presence of both a linearly polarized laser field and a static electric field. Results for the differential cross section as a function of the number of photons n exchanged with the laser field are presented. For x-ray–atom scattering in the presence of a 10¹⁴ W/cm² laser field the differential cross section has a plateau only for emitted photons (n<0). Adding a static electric field gives rise to an extended plateau for absorbed photons (n>0), indicating a substantial increase of the scattered x-ray energies. We present a quasiclassical explanation of these results.

Field cage studies were conducted to describe the relationship between the percentage of Lysiphlebus testaceipes (Cresson) parasitism (as measured by aphid mummies) and densities of greenbug, Schizaphis graminum Rondani, on grain sorghum, Sorghum bicolor L. In 1993 and 1994, a biotype E-susceptible grain sorghum hybrid was grown in field cages and L. testaceipes adults were released after each plant was infested with 20 biotype E greenbugs. The release rates were 0, 0.5, 1.0, and 2.0 wasps per plant in 1993, and 0, 0.16, 0.33, and 0.5 wasps per plant in 1994. Greenbugs and mummies were counted 1-2 times a week …

The physiological condition of Mexican fruit flies, Anastrepha ludens (Loew), affected their attraction to 2 similar but qualitatively different synthetic lures in wind-tunnel bioassays. The 2 lures were BioLure (ammonium acetate and putrescine) and AMPu (ammonium carbonate, methylamine HCI, and putrescine) . Effects of food deprivation on attraction to the lures were smaller than the effects of sex, time of day, and irradiation. Sugar-fed, protein-starved flies were attracted more strongly than other hunger-status groups to the lures. Sugar-starved, protein-starved females were less responsive than other groups of females to AMPu. Protein-starved males were more responsive than protein-fed males to BioLure. …

Morphine-Conditioned Changes In Locomotor Activity: Role Of The Conditioned Stimulus, Rick A. Bevins, Michael T. Bardo

When a multisensory environment was reliably paired with morphine (2 mg/kg) in rats, that environment, in a drug-free test, evoked a hyperactive conditioned response (CR). When an olfactory cue (banana odor) was the only stimulus element reliably paired with morphine, it also elicited a hyperactive CR. However, a gustatory cue (saccharin solution) evoked a hypoactive CR. This taste-elicited decrease in activity was dose dependent; morphine at 2 and 4 mg/kg conditioned hypoactivity, whereas a higher dose (8 mg/kg) did not. A robust conditioned saccharin aversion occurred only at the highest dose of morphine, suggesting disassociation between the hypoactive CR and …

Two New Nymphalidae From Western North Carolina: New Subspecies Of Speyeria Aphrodite And Phyciodes Batesii, Ronald R. Gatrelle

The Taxonomic Report of the International Lepidoptera Survey

Two new subspecies are described from Macon County, North Carolina, United States. Speyeria aphrodite cullasaja is characterized by dorsal melanism, especially in females, by usually lacking the dorsal FW basal spots in cell Cu1 and Cu2, and by a narrowed buff marginal band on the ventral HW (sometimes absent in females). Phyciodes batesii maconensis males are characterized by wholly yellow ventral hind wings devoid of any dark marginal dusting or whitish crescents; and females occasionally possessing, lightly dusted, brown margins and rarely having a silvered marginal ventral HW spot. PPhyciodes batesii maconensis larvae are gregarious Aster feeders. Females are …

The functions and methods of the NOU Records Committee are described in its bylaws (NOU Records Committee 1986). The committee's purpose is to provide a procedure for documenting unusual bird sightings and to establish a list of all documented birds for Nebraska. THE OFFICIAL LIST OF THE BIRDS OF NEBRASKA was first published in 1988 (NOU Records Committee 1988) and has been appended seven times (Mollhoff 1989, Grenon 1990, 1991, Gubanyi 1996a, 1996b, 1996c, Brogie 1997). An update of THE OFFICIAL LIST OF THE BIRDS OF NEBRASKA was last published in 1997 (NOU Records Committee 1997).

Bird Banding Notes From Ruth Green, Ruth Green

On 29 April 1998, while working with school children from the Chadron Public Schools, Ruth banded a Pine Siskin at Nebraska's Chadron State Park, Dawes County. Approximately seven and a half months later, on 12 December, this same bird was recovered beneath a feeder in Springfield, Oregon. The Pine Siskin was dead, perhaps a victim of disease sweeping the siskin population on the West Coast. This particular occurrence is noteworthy for the distance traveled both west and north.

Larry Einemann kindly pointed out that in the Spring Report all his sightings from Pioneer's Park should have been attributed to Wilderness Park at Pioneer's Boulevard (in Lincoln). Larry noted that Pioneer's Park is a manicured Lincoln city park which is not good for birds except for in the vicinity of the embedded Chet Ager Nature Center. This was my (WRS) error; personally I have trouble even finding the Wilderness Park entrances, let alone naming them properly!

Dear Fellow Birders,

It is with deep regret that I inform you of the death of Harvey L. Gunderson on Tuesday, 23 February, 1999, in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Harvey was born in Gary, Minnesota, on 11 June, 1913, and went On to become Associate Director Of the University Of Nebraska State Museum. Along the way, Harvey received a Bachelor’s Degree from Concordia College, Moorhead, MN, a Master's Degree from the University Of Minnesota and a Ph.D. from the University Of Michigan.

I estimate that 215 bird species currently breed or have previously bred in Nebraska. This number compares with a total of 330 species that breed or have bred in the Great Plains region south of Canada, as I defined that region in my book on the breeding birds of the Great Plains (Johnsgard, 1979).

Grasslands or potential grasslands make up about 81 percent of the Great Plains' vegetation, and probably represented about 96 percent of Nebraska's original vegetation. Only in the Sandhills region is that vegetation type still essentially intact; the tall-grass prairie of eastern Nebraska is Virtually gone. In …
