Hydrogeomorphic Response To Flooding In Northern Yellowstone National Park, Zachary P. Deluca Jan 2024

Hydrogeomorphic Response To Flooding In Northern Yellowstone National Park, Zachary P. Deluca

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Understanding and predicting flood-induced geomorphic change, and the relative influences of fluvial forces and valley-bottom geometry on system response, are persistent quandaries in geomorphic process studies. We combine field surveys, remote sensing, and hydraulic modeling to assess the hydrogeomorphic effects of historic flooding in northern Yellowstone National Park (YNP) in a variety of channel configurations. We compare impulse, a metric that incorporates a flow duration threshold based on threshold channel theory, grain size, channel-bed slope, and flood depth and stream power estimates with hydrogeomorphic response. Measurements of pre- and post-flood active-channel width change in aerial photos captured geomorphic response associated …

Looking Past, Looking Forward: America's National Parks, Archaeology And Climate Change, Rachel Blumhardt Apr 2019

Looking Past, Looking Forward: America's National Parks, Archaeology And Climate Change, Rachel Blumhardt

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

America’s National Parks are rich with cultural history, flora, fauna and some of nature’s most impressive landscapes. As climate change continues to accelerate, these parks and their cultural and natural resources are being threatened. In this project, I will present a colorful, informational powerpoint that concentrates on 4 specific parks: Yellowstone National Park, National Park of American Samoa, Glacier Bay National Park and Mesa Verde National Park. I will focus on the archaeology and cultural significance of these parks, while also examining the ways that climate change is putting these, and other associated assets of the parks, at risk. I …

Cenozoic Evolution Of The Gold Creek Basin, Western Montana: Mapping And Documenting The Geology Of The Rock Creek Lake 7.5' Usgs Quadrangle, Chelsea Mcraven Feeney

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

This thesis presents results from 1:24,000 scale surface mapping and related analysis of geology within the Rock Creek Lake 7.5’ USGS Quadrangle in western Montana. The purpose of this study is to 1) document the Cenozoic structural evolution and sedimentary fill record associated with tectonic development of the northern Flint Creek Range and, in particular, the Anaconda metamorphic core complex and 2) determine the existence and extent of Pleistocene glacial deposition in the study area. Gneissic mylonitic granodiorite along the southeastern contact of the Royal Stock intrusion indicates the Anaconda metamorphic core complex detachment zone trends through the center of …

Separation And Characterization Of Respirable Amphibole Fibers From Libby, Montana, James S. Webber, David J. Blake, Tony Ward, Jean C. Pfau Jun 2008

Separation And Characterization Of Respirable Amphibole Fibers From Libby, Montana, James S. Webber, David J. Blake, Tony Ward, Jean C. Pfau

Public and Community Health Sciences Faculty Publications

The vermiculite mine in Libby, Montana, was in operation for over 70 yr and was contaminated with asbestos-like amphibole fibers. The mining, processing, and shipping of this vermiculite led to significant fiber inhalation exposure throughout the community, and residents of Libby have developed numerous pulmonary diseases such as lung cancer and mesothelioma. The present study describes the separation of Libby 6-mix into respirable and nonrespirable size fractions by means of aqueous elutriation. The elutriator, designed to separate fibers with aerodynamic diameters smaller than 2.5 μm (respirable) from larger fibers, used an upward flow rate of 3.4 × 10−4 …

Hazardous Wastes From Large-Scale Metal Extraction: The Clark Fork Waste Complex, Mt, Johnnie Moore, Samuel Luoma Apr 1990

Hazardous Wastes From Large-Scale Metal Extraction: The Clark Fork Waste Complex, Mt, Johnnie Moore, Samuel Luoma

Clark Fork Symposium Archives

Large-scale metal extraction has generated extensive deposits of hazardous waste worldwide. Mining began more than 125 years ago in the Clark Fork drainage basin, western Montana, and contributed to primary, secondary and tertiary contamination over an area 115 the size of Rhode Island and along hundreds of kilometers of riparian habitat. This complex of waste deposits provides numerous examples of technically difficult problems in geochemistry I hydrology, ecology and epidemiology associated with characterizing, understanding and managing hazardous mine wastes.
