Graduate Student Portfolios, Professional Papers, and Capstone Projects
This portfolio describes how I have developed strengths, skills, values, and cognitive and affective processes through the ten competencies of the Master of Social Work program at the University of Montana. Through attending classes, engaging with professors and my cohort, and continuing to strengthen all I've learned in my practicum, I feel confident that these skills and strengths have grown tremendously, and I'll continue to grow through my practice. The following portfolio describes progress over the past years.

Introduction
My development throughout the Master of Social Work program at the University of Montana has been guided by a longstanding understanding that social work is more than direct service. This belief was central to my decision to pursue an MSW rather than a master’s degree in counseling. While I value clinical skill and therapeutic relationships, I have always been drawn to the broader scope of social work, the profession’s commitment to social justice, systems change, and the integration of individual well-being with structural transformation. Over the course of this program, that orientation has deepened and become more theoretically grounded, …
Turbulence Resistant Schools: A Qualitative Phenomenological Study Of Educational Leadership In Central And Eastern Europe, Sofia Reis
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
The expanding complexity and increasing disruptions of our world affects schools. During both stable and unstable times, successful educational leaders support their schools’ ability to accomplish their core mission: student learning and development. Using a qualitative approach, this research explored experiences of educational leaders who established schools in Central and Eastern Europe during the post-Soviet era and continue leading them to this day. The central question was: What is the lived experience of successful assertive educational leaders as they navigate extreme turbulence? In this study, leadership is understood as a collegial activity determined by the context where it is embedded, …

Teachers’ Group Reflection And Their Facilitations In Implementing Collaborative Reasoning Discussions: A Qualitative Study, Emmanuella Swastika Datu
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Incorporating small-group discussions in classrooms has shown promising benefits in improving 4th grade students’ thinking and social skills; however, the practice remains challenging. Although teachers are motivated to try to incorporate small-group discussions, studies examining the shift from teacher-dominated classroom practice towards a more dialogic pedagogy are scarce. This study sought to explore the role of teacher group reflection on teacher’s learning to implement discussion-based teaching referred to as Collaborative Reasoning Discussion. Drawing from theories on reflective teaching and professional learning communities, seven transcripts of teacher reflections and 12 transcripts of facilitations were examined using line-by-line microanalysis and a linguistic …

Leadership In Informal Stormwater Governance Networks, Brian C. Chaffin, Theresa M. Floyd, Sandra L. Albro

Recent transitions in the governance of urban stormwater, specifically developments that leverage the environmental and social benefits of green infrastructure (GI) including infiltration and neighborhood stabilization, often require capacities beyond those of any single municipal- or regional-scale organization. In many cities, transitions toward green stormwater infrastructure have been shepherded by networks of individuals spanning a diversity of organizations from governments to NGOs. These networks are often informal, that is, not established by legal mandate, governing authority, or formal agreement, and are often striking for their lack of formal hierarchy or formal leadership. Previous scholarship has revealed the importance of leadership …

Explorations In Leadership Education: The Role Of Leadership Education In Higher Education Outcomes, Douglas G. Mcbroom
Explorations In Leadership Education: The Role Of Leadership Education In Higher Education Outcomes, Douglas G. Mcbroom
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
There has been much criticism of academic leadership programs for not adequately preparing leaders. This is the case for all of the major programs: business administration, educational leadership, military science, and public administration. However, these evaluations themselves are limited inasmuch as they are typically concerned with such dimension as students' satisfaction and faculty credentials and performance while organizational outcomes attributable to leadership are ignored. The present research investigates the relationship of institutional outcomes for colleges and universities and the presence or absences of presidents with formal leadership training. The outcomes indicators are those contained in the Integrated Postsecondary Educational Data …
