Expectations In The Preservation Of Dna And Bacterial Organisms In Differential Montana Burials, Kaylee M. Hinds

This study investigates patterns of decomposition and biomolecular preservation in domestic pig (Sus scrofa domesticus) proxies under varying burial conditions in a cold, seasonal climate. Conducted at the Lubrecht Experimental Forest in western Montana, the project aims to evaluate DNA degradation, microbial activity, and environmental influences across shallow, deep, surface, and secondary burial contexts. Three pigs were placed in distinct burial treatments (surface exposure, partial burial, and full burial), with a fourth site later added following bear disturbance and carcass relocation. The development of efficient and low-cost technologies that convert hydrocarbons, including methane, to liquid fuels through controlled functionalization of its inert C–H bond is a fundamental challenge. Also, the activation of carbon−hydrogen (C−H) bonds is the first step of functionalizing inert hydrocarbons. This transformation is a key step in many biological and synthetic processes. One representative example inspired by nature is the metalloenzyme called soluble methane monooxygenase (sMMO), a nonheme dinuclear iron-dependent enzyme that catalyzes the hydroxylation of the strong C–H bond of methane (bond dissociation energy BDE = 105 kcal/mol) using O2 as the oxidant. Wildfires emit significant amounts of pollutants that degrade air quality. Plumes from three wildfires in the western U.S. were measured from aircraft during the Studies of Emissions and Atmospheric Composition, Clouds and Climate Coupling by Regional Surveys (SEAC4RS) and the Biomass Burning Observation Project (BBOP), both in summer 2013. This study reports an extensive set of emission factors (EFs) for over 80 gases and 5 components of submicron particulate matter (PM1) from these temperate wildfires. These include rarely, or never before, measured oxygenated volatile organic compounds and multifunctional organic nitrates. The observed EFs are compared with previous measurements of temperate …

The focus of this study was to systematically investigate the variables involved in electroless deposition of palladium and palladium alloy membranes on a known porous stainless steel substrate, and apply the results to a new and novel porous stainless steel substrate. Different oxide pore and surface treatments were studied. The effect of silica as a diffusion barrier, surface pore modifier, and palladium nucleation site was examined. Silica sol-gel coating treated stainless steel substrates were explored. Several different formulas of sol-gel coatings and their impact on palladium and palladium copper deposition were researched. A web-based version of CO2SYS program has been implemented to replace the current DOS based version system. The user does not have to download anything to a local computer, instead they can run the calculations online freely. For this new designed program, all the user inputs and options are displayed in one single window instead of several small black and white DOS screens. All the calculation results are listed in a single page, as well. The user can change any inputs and constants before and after the data calculation, i.e., recalculation.
