Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines how Guelel Kumba, a Senegalese Fulani griot, chef, and musician currently residing in Oxford, Mississippi, incorporates West African cuisine and music into his daily life in the South. This profile study asks: How does Kumba's performances and cooking translate Fulani heritage into Mississippi's blues and soul-food scenes? The research employed observation, secondary sources, purposeful semi-structured interviews, and a documentary.

Kumba views tradition as an arsenal, preserving its essential rhythms and flavors while reworking family recipes and tunes to suit local tastes. Customers can eat, listen, and interact their way into shared history at his food truck and …

Alternative Southern Communities: Cultural Other "Asians" In Contemporary Fiction About The American South, Mariko Hiwatashi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This project explores the representation of minority groups in contemporary U.S. Southern literature, with a particular focus on Asian communities. It not only challenges the conventional perception that Asians in America are primarily associated with the West Coast but also underscores how Asian representation in literature plays a crucial role in illuminating the complexities of regional identity and social structure in the American South.

Historically, Asian immigrants have been part of the Southern landscape since the eighteenth century when Filipino sailors settled in New Orleans. Chinese immigrants also played essential roles as laborers in the post-slavery South. However, their experiences …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

After the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, student and faculty activists at public, flagship universities used existing civil rights organizations and founded new activist groups to bring attention to barriers that hindered their equal power and participation within higher education. African Americans, Mexican Americans, Puerto Ricans, and women created grassroots campaigns and worked within institutional structures to reform universities between 1964 and 1985. Activists worked separately and across gender, racial, and ethnic lines in attempts to gain authority, power, and self-determination within the university system. Students and faculty asserted that flagship universities needed to serve the needs …

Syrian And Lebanese Identity In The American South, Caetlind Moudy

Honors Theses

For Americans of Arab descent, identity can present a number of difficulties to define within the existing ethnic and racial categories of the United States. Secondary Diaspora: Cape Verdean Immigration To The Southeastern United States, Jessica Lopes, Brandon Lundy

Southern Anthropologist

Diasporas are fluid cultural constructs that foster identity, community, and connections over time, distance, and social space. This study explores a derivative secondary diaspora to illustrate how and why diasporas are interesting social phenomena established out of complex socio-cultural, economic, and political conditions. Outside of the large Cape Verdean diaspora of New England, relatively little is known about other U.S. Cape Verdean communities. This research examines second and third wave moves that push and pull individuals and families beyond established diasporic communities. …

Southerner And Irish? Regional And Ethnic Consciousness In Savannah, Georgia, William L. Smith

Journal of Rural Social Sciences

Some of these respondents practice a symbolic regionalism. Ethnic identity for most of the respondents is more important than their regional identity, although for them southerner and Irish are not mutually exclusive identities. The strength of ethnic identity is not significantly related to the importance of …
