Better Together: Examining The Perceived Interprofessional Competencies Of Professional Counselors And Counselors-In-Training, Taylor Johnson

There is a growing focus on interprofessional education and competencies in the healthcare field. Interprofessional education and collaboration have been shown to play a critical role in mitigating challenges that health systems and health workers face around the globe. Despite the growing interest in interprofessional education and interprofessional collaboration in healthcare settings, counselors are often absent from the research focused on interprofessional competencies. This study examined the perceived interprofessional competencies of professional counselors and counselors-in-training using the IPEC Competency Self-Assessment Tool. Despite being a critical component of an individual’s cultural identity religion and spirituality have not historically been included in multicultural counseling curricula. Research suggests that there are many benefits to addressing within the counseling relationship, and clients desire to do so. This study aims to determine how and to what extent religion and spirituality are being included in cultural diversity courses within CACREP accredited, master’s level counseling programs. A mixed-methods content analysis was conducted to review syllabi, required journal articles, assignments, and a representative sample of required textbooks from seventy-four cultural diversity counseling courses within CACREP accredited programs. The purpose of this study was to explore the effects of the counselors spiritual background and participant spirituality on the perceptions of the expertness, attractiveness, and trustworthiness of the counselor. The following questions were examined using a MANOVA: 1) Did participants perceive a counselors expertness, attractiveness, and/or trustworthiness differently based on the self-rated spirituality of the participant? 2) Did participants perceive a counselors expertness, attractiveness, and/or trustworthiness differently based on the spiritual background of the counselor? 3) Was there an interaction between the counselors spiritual background and the participants self-rated spirituality with regard to how the participant perceived the counselors …

Adults with disabilities face multiple internal, social, and systemic barriers that hamperefforts to attain and maintain meaningful employment. In order to achieve success in vocational pursuits, individuals with disabilities must demonstrate perseverance in the face of probable adversity; this construct is career resilience. No scale has been developed to measure a persons career resilience that is specifically tailored to people with disabilities. The purpose of this study was to develop an instrument to measure the career resilience of adults with disabilities. After creating the Career Resilience for Adults with Disabilities Scale (CRADS), two studies were conducted to evaluate the scale. …

Graduate Counseling Students' Perceptions Of Their Preparation To Counsel Children, Alexander Hudson Barton

This exploratory study examined 91 masters students' perceptions of their preparedness for counseling children. A web-based survey was distributed nationally to students in clinical mental health, rehabilitation, and school counseling programs to explore the students' desires to counsel children, their perceptions of their overall ability, and their theoretical preparations. Significant differences were found in the different groups explored. Implications for counselor educators, student preparation, and future research are discussed.
