Between 1958 and 1964 the citizens of black-majority populations in adjoining West Tennessee counties struggled to claim and exercise citizens' rights to participate in civil society. Voting rights activism amon the black community was answered with an economic embargo conducted by county officials and the busines community. This study examines voter registration as a catalyst of socioeconomic change and social discourse in rural America. During the 1960s …

Pidgin In The Classroom: Hawai`I'S English Standard Schools, Americanization, And Hawaiian Identity, 1920-1960, Katherine J E Fox

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

From 1924 to 1960 some of Hawai`i's public schools were segregated institutions. Unlike the segregated schools of the mainland, the main goal of the English Standard schools, as they were known, was to ensure that English-speaking children be taught in environments free from Pidgin and other native languages spoken by the majority of Hawai`i's school children. Because this segregation was linguistically-based, it was possible for children of all races and ethnicities to attend English Standard schools, but there can be no doubt that they were heavily dominated by white students in the early years of the program, much to the …

No research to date had specifically explored the relationship between first-generation status, family cohesion, and negative career thoughts of college students. The Freedom Faith Speeches Of Prathia L. Hall: Uncovering A Hybrid Rhetoric Of Protest, Mittie K. Carey

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Cultural hybridity is most prevalently revealed in cultures where racism starkly exists, according to Homi K. Bhabba. The Jim Crow culture if the South during the Civil Rights Movement was one such culture. To Bhabba, a hybridized racial identity emerges when two polarized cultures are thrown together. I alter his perspective by arguing that a hybridized rhetoric of protest emerged in the South before and during the Civil Rights Movement, as evinced by the freedom faith expressions of activist, womanist, professor, lecturer, and preacher Prathia L. Hall (1940-2002). Hall first coined the phrase, freedom faith, in 1997, but described it …

Cindy Sheehan's Confrontational Iraq War Protests: A Case Study In Contentious Rhetoric, Jennifer Ann Jackson Jul 2012

Cindy Sheehan's Confrontational Iraq War Protests: A Case Study In Contentious Rhetoric, Jennifer Ann Jackson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation examines Cindy Sheehan's Iraq War protests from November 2004 to May 2007 as a case study of contentious rhetoric. The notion of contentious rhetoric is based on the concept of contentious politics developed by sociologist and political scientist Charles Tilly, sociologist Doug McAdam, and political scientist Sidney Tarrow. This new conceptualization acts as a guide to understanding how Sheehan navigates the dichotomy between women and war and how she uses her own motherhood as validation for her protests. I selected a cross section of Sheehan's speeches and online blogs for this analysis and, through a close reading of …
