Elastic Magnetic Electron Scattering From 'Ca, H Baghaei, A Cichocki, J B. Flanz, M Frodyma, Y Han, R S. Hicks, R A. Miskimen, Gerald Alvin Peterson, S H. Rokni

Gerald Alvin Peterson

The elastic magnetic form factor of 41Ca has been determined by 180° electron scattering in the momentum-transfer range 0.9–2.0 fm-1. An analysis of the data indicates that the amplitudes of the M3 and M5 multipoles are quenched by factors of 0.57±0.16 and 0.68±0.07 relative to the simple shell model. In contrast, the magnitude of the M7 form factor is in good accord with this model. Calculations that include multiparticle-multihole configurations in the 1f7/2 and 1d3/2 subshells, first-order core polarization to higher excited orbitals, and meson exchange currents give reasonable agreement with the data for all multipoles. The rms radius of …

Transverse Electrodisintegration Of The Deuteron In The Threshold Region At High Q2,", R G. Arnold, D Benton, P E. Bosted, L Clogher, B Debebe, M B. Frodyma, R S. Hicks, A Hotta, Gerald Alvin Peterson Jul 1990

Transverse Electrodisintegration Of The Deuteron In The Threshold Region At High Q2,", R G. Arnold, D Benton, P E. Bosted, L Clogher, B Debebe, M B. Frodyma, R S. Hicks, A Hotta, Gerald Alvin Peterson

Gerald Alvin Peterson

Cross sections for 180° deuteron electrodisintegration have been measured near threshold for the Q2 range 1.21 to 2.77 (GeV/c)2. The data are compared to several nonrelativistic meson-nucleon and hybrid quark-hadron models. The data are in strong disagreement with the impulse approximation, indicating the importance of non-nucleonic degrees of freedom. None of the models are in good agreement with the data at all values of Q2. The ratio W1/W2 of inelastic structure functions has been extracted using previous forward angle data and is found to decrease strongly near threshold, also indicating the importance of interaction effects.

Measurements of the deuteron elastic magnetic structure function B(Q') are reported at squared four-momentum transfer values 1.20~ Qi ~ 2.77 (GeV/c)'. Also reported are values for the proton magnetic form factor Gstr(Q2) at 11 Q values between 0.49 and 1.75 (GeV/c) . The data were obtained using an electron beam of 0.5 to 1.3 GeV. Electrons backscattered near 180' were detected in coincidence with deuterons or protons recoiling near 0 in a large solid-angle double-arm spectrometer system. The data for B(Q ) are found to decrease rapidly from Q =1.2 to 2 (GeV/c), and then rise to a secondary maximum …

Efficiency Mages. Mark-Up Pricing And Effective Demand, Peter Skott Feb 1990

Efficiency Mages. Mark-Up Pricing And Effective Demand, Peter Skott

Peter Skott

The combination of an efficiency wage approach with the explicit consideration of pricinq and product market conditions leads to the existence of a unique NAIRU. The value of the NAIRU can be influenced by a variety of supply side policies but aqqreqate demand policies may also play a role. The effort function will be related to workers' waqe aspirations and if waqe aspirations depend on past outcomes of the distributional struqqle then an important element of hysteresis is introduced into the system. Expansionary demand policies which increase employment will be asaociated with unanticipated inflation. Real waqes will fall below the …

Foot And Word In Prosodic Morphology: The Arabic Broken Plural, John J. Mccarthy, Alan Prince Jan 1990

Foot And Word In Prosodic Morphology: The Arabic Broken Plural, John J. Mccarthy, Alan Prince

John J. McCarthy

This article proposes a theory of Prosodic Domain Circumscription, by means of which rules sensitive to morphological domain may be restricted to a prosodically characterized (sub-)domain in a word or stem. The theory is illustrated primarily by a comprehensive analysis of the Arabic broken plural; it is further supported by analysis of a number of processes from other languages, yielding a formal typology of domain-circumscription effects. The results obtained here depend on, and therefore confirm, two central principles of Prosodic Morphology: (1) the Prosodic Morphology Hypothesis, which requires that templates be expressed in prosodic, not segmental terms; and (2) the …

Beginning A Career: A Bronx Autobiography, Joel Halpern

Joel M. Halpern

This article begins where the initial account, "The pulley, A Memoir of a Bronx Industry," ends. In some ways my father paints an idealized picture. His eagerness and dedication seem somewhat out of place in today's world, but many aspects of the world he describes are still familiar to an older generation although contexts have drastically changed.

Food Safety Policy Fights: A U.S. Perspective, Julie Caswell Jan 1990

Food Safety Policy Fights: A U.S. Perspective, Julie Caswell

Julie Caswell

Perspective is very important in understanding the area of food safety. This importance is illustrated by a favorite cartoon of mine that features an older, experienced mouse giving advice to a young mouse. The older mouse, in wrapping up, says to the younger, "... and stay away from scientists— they cause cancer." Facing an avalanche of infor-mation on links between diet and health, consumers may, in frustration, sympathize with the mouse's view, and are having some difficulty sorting out which are the important cause-and-effect relation-ships. Government and industry also are struggling to develop a coherent approach to food safety and …

Book Review Of America's Ailing Cities: Fiscal Health And The Design Of Urban Policy, John Mullin Jan 1990

Book Review Of America's Ailing Cities: Fiscal Health And The Design Of Urban Policy, John Mullin

John R. Mullin

Over the past decade it has become increasingly clear that many of our larger cities are slowly and steadily moving toward fiscal hard times. Often this trend has been hidden by the polish, glitter, and glitz of showplace downtowns, shopping plazas, and highrise office complexes. Other times it has been hidden by defrayed maintenance of infrastructure, a subtle erosion of services to specific sub-groups in the community, or the collapse of capital improvement planning.

Use Of The Microindentation Technique For Determining Interfacial Fracture Energy, Thomas J. Lardner, L. Rosenfeld, J. E. Ritter, M. R. Lin Jan 1990

Use Of The Microindentation Technique For Determining Interfacial Fracture Energy, Thomas J. Lardner, L. Rosenfeld, J. E. Ritter, M. R. Lin

Thomas J. Lardner

The microindentation technique was used to determine the interfacial fracture energy of epoxy coatings on soda‐lime glass substrates. An analytical model was developed for calculating fracture energy based on indenter load versus debond crack size measurements. Finite‐element analysis was used to determine the relative amounts of opening and shear loadings at the debond crack tip. The calculated fracture energies are compared to values determined by the double‐cantilever‐beam technique and the four‐point flexure‐beam technique.

Gene Activation Is Required For Developmentally Programmed Cell Death, Lawrence M. Schwartz, L. Kosz, B. K. Kay Jan 1990

Gene Activation Is Required For Developmentally Programmed Cell Death, Lawrence M. Schwartz, L. Kosz, B. K. Kay

Lawrence M. Schwartz

The intersegmental muscles of the tobacco hawkmoth Manduca sexta die during the 36-hr period after metamorphosis. The trigger for cell death is a fall in the ecdysteroid titer. Commitment of the intersegmental muscles to degenerate involves selective repression and activation of ecdysteroid-responsive genes. When the pattern of gene expression is altered after injection of either 20-hydroxyecdysone or actinomycin D, the muscles persist. cDNA clones have been isolated for four genes that become abundantly expressed coincident with the commitment to degenerate. The data presented here indicate that programmed cell death is not due to the cessation of macromolecular synthesis in condemned …
