Age-related structural and molecular changes in older adults have been shown to significantly affect their cognitive and motor functions (Trollor and Valenzuela, 2001). Given the growing population of older adults, it is imperative to bridge the gaps in scientific understanding of cognition and motor capabilities in healthy older adults’ population. This study investigates five major neurochemicals and their potential correlations with gait, balance, executive function, and attention in healthy older adults. My research identifies the existing parallels between the repressive societal structures portrayed in the play Hedda Gabler (1890) and central political issues addressed by representatives of the German and Austrian women’s movement at the turn of the 19th century. Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen shows how oppressive social conditions negatively affect his female characters, but he does not offer satisfactory alternatives to their suffering. I selected the theoretical writings of Helene Stöcker and Rosa Mayreder as more “radical” opinions of the first German and Austrian women’s movement because they present solutions to the repressive societal structures Ibsen addresses. State and federal agencies spend considerable time and resources to enhance and create habitat for wildlife. Understanding how target and non-target species respond to these efforts can help direct the allocation of limited conservation resources. However, monitoring species response to habitat management comes with several logistical challenges that are exacerbated as the area of geographic focus increases. I used autonomous recording units (ARUs) to mitigate these challenges when assessing Eastern Whip-poor-will (Antrostomus vociferus) response to forest management. Many Chinese classifiers are nearly synonymic – they can be used with the same head nouns without changing the meaning of the sentence, in other words, such classifiers can be used interchangeably or almost interchangeably. This poses a challenge for Chinese language learners, especially those who lack such a grammatical category in their own native language. Another complication arises from the ambiguous English translations of many classifiers.

They are often utilized to assist with identification of subcellular localization and characterization of the function of target proteins of interest. However, because there can be considerable sequence diversity between orthologous proteins in Xenopus and mammals, antibodies produced against mouse or human proteins often do not recognize Xenopus counterparts. Prior work has demonstrated that the sequential presentation of lineup members in eyewitness lineups can result in undesirable position effects. For example, some studies have shown that placing the suspect in later positions increases discriminability. However, the evidence for this late-position discriminability advantage is mixed and the processes by which the discriminability increase occurs are unclear. However, one theory in particular, diagnostic feature detection theory (DFDT) explicitly predicts a late-position discriminability increase. According to DFDT, because shared features across lineup members cannot be used as reliable recognition cues to guide identification, discounting these features from consideration improves recognition. Microbubbles are small gas-filled bubbles with diameters ranging from 50 to 1 μm, and less than 200 nm are called nanobubbles. Their small sizes and large specific surface area result in a high gas dissolution rate and long lifetime in liquid. Ozone is a strong oxidant that destroys microorganisms and only produces oxygen as the final by-product in fresh water. However, due to the poor stability of aqueous ozone, critical gas waste happens during treatments which leads to a high economic loss. Aneurysms are a deadly asymptomatic cardiovascular disease that may occur especially where there are bends and bifurcations in the cerebral vasculature. A region where these features are especially prominent is the Circle of Willis (COW) in the brain, where aneurysms are known to occur. In the carotid artery, which feeds into the COW, the Reynolds number of blood flow is typically around 200-500. Even with such a low Reynolds number, turbulent-like flow, or tortuous flow, can occur due to bends, bifurcations and highly pulsatile flow which lower the effective Reynolds number where tortuous flow can occur. In the summer of 2022, a co-assembly of metagenome was created using the microbes found at Barres Woods in Harvard Forest. 14 samples were taken, and sample was split into the organic and mineral layer, which totals 28 Bulk MAGs. Within this Co-assembly, 4 different genomes were found which were designated with the phylum of FCPU426. Three of which were considered medium quality and one being assigned high quality. The novel phyla first appeared in NCBI and GTDB databases in June 2018. The name FCPU426 dates to 2010 and was named based on the 16s amplicon sequencing.

Introduction: Recent evidence in isolated mitochondria and permeabilized muscle fibers in ex vivo using simultaneous measurements of O2 consumption and ATP production suggest that mitochondrial efficiency provides an additional mechanism to fine-tune oxidative phosphorylation rate to ATP demand in skeletal muscle. Universally across modern cultures children acquire the meaning of the words one, two, and three in order. While much research has focused on how children acquire this knowledge and what this knowledge represents, the question of why children learn numbers in order has been comparatively neglected. To address this question, a non-verbal anticipatory looking task was implemented. In this task, 35 14- to 23-month-old infants were assessed on their ability to form implicit category structures for the numbers one, two, and three. Antifascist Autobiographical Writing By Three Southern European Women Writers: Natália Correia, Concha Zardoya, And Ludovica Ripa Di Meana, Jessica R. Beasley

This thesis puts three antifascist writers in dialogue: Concha Zardoya, Natália Correia, and Ludovica Ripa di Meana. It does so based on their similarities as women who lived in Southern European fascist regimes, who wrote autobiographical poetry books about those regimes. Comparing and qualifying the regimes based on Umberto Eco’s Ur-Fascism, in which he highlights common “family resemblance” characteristics of fascist regimes, I set up the positionality of each women within her specific milieu. In Caulobacter crescentus, progression through the cell cycle is regulated by the AAA+ protease ClpXP, and there are several classes of cell-cycle substrates that require adaptors in order to be degraded. CpdR, a single domain-response regulator, binds the N-terminal domain of ClpXP and primes the protease for degradation of downstream factors (Lau et al., 2015). The ability of CpdR to bind ClpX is regulated by its phosphorylation state. In the unphosphorylated state, CpdR binds ClpXP and guides its localization to the cell pole during the swarmer to stalked transition, where CpdR is mediates degradation of substrates such as PdeA. …

The Bog Turtle (Glyptemys muhlenbergii) is a federally threatened species that occupies isolated pockets of open-canopy fens. This long-lived species is susceptible to habitat loss and degradation; thus, the conservation of known populations and management of their habitat is critical to the species’ survival. Long-term (multi-decadal) assessment is important for determining population trends and responses to ongoing habitat management. Salar de Atacama (SdA) located in Northern Chile is home to one of the planet’s largest salar systems and lithium resources. Managing groundwater resources in salars is not obvious due to the lack of scientific understanding on the connectivity between the freshwater and brine systems. Using heat as a tracer in SdA provides a cost-effective method to further investigate groundwater flow in salars. This study employs 372 temperature-depth profiles from 90 boreholes between 2013-18 to understand the distinct thermal zones and flow between them in SdA. P iperine is an alkaloid found in pepper plant, w hich exhibits many health benefits including anti aging, anti cancer, anti diabetic, and anti inflammatory effects. However, the anti obesity research of piperine is limited. Therefore, th is study was done to determine the effects of piperine on fat accumulation, using in vivo model, Caenor habditis elegans . Treatment with 100 μ M piperine reduce fat content of wild type C. elegans by 17% over control. Pumping rate was not affected by piperine, suggesting piperine has no effects on food intake of worms. More specifically, in Caulobacter crescentus, the ClpXP protease is responsible for driving progression through the cell cycle and protein quality control. p53 is a transcription factor and an important tumor suppressor protein that becomes activated due to DNA damage. Because of its role as a tumor suppressor, mutations in the gene that encodes it are found in over 50% of human cancers. The N-terminal transactivation domain (NTAD) of p53 is intrinsically disordered and modulates the function and interactions of p53 in the cell.
