Physical Modeling To Represent Molten-Slag Entrapment Behavior Into Molten-Steel Under Simultaneous Similitude Condition Of Multiple Dimensionless Numbers, Yuichi Tsukaguchi, Sho Nakano

Progress in Scale Modeling, an International Journal

Physical model construction and experiment are essential for scientific investigations of flow phenomena such as high temperature two phase flow of molten metal and inert gas. It has been a common method to construct a physical model with a convenient scale then proceed experiments under similitude condition of one or two dimensionless number(s) of dominant forces to represent. It is an ideal experimental method to satisfy the simultaneous similitude condition of multiple dimensionless numbers concerned with the objective flow phenomena but has been considered difficult or impossible to realize for many years. Contrarily, the concept of the simultaneous similitude of …

Karst Hydrogeologic Framework And Factors Contributing To Flooding In Burgin, Kentucky, Charles Taylor, Junfeng Zhu, Matthew Carmichael, Hudson J. Koch

KGS Publications and Maps

This report examines the karst hydrogeologic setting and drainage characteristics that are thought to contribute to frequent severe flooding in the city of Burgin in Mercer County, Kentucky. Burgin is located at the eastern end of an approximately 4.5 mi² mapped karst groundwater basin in the Ordovician limestone aquifer system in the Inner Bluegrass karst region. Flooding occurs within a streamless 1.4 mi² dry karst valley where almost all channelized surface runoff has been captured by sinkholes and sinking stream segments and diverted underground by conduit piracy. The only natural outlet for water exiting from the karst valley and larger …

Development Of Reduced Conflict U-Turn (Rcut) Guidance In Kentucky, Travis Thompson, Duane Thomas, Jill Asher, Jeff Jasper Aug 2026

Development Of Reduced Conflict U-Turn (Rcut) Guidance In Kentucky, Travis Thompson, Duane Thomas, Jill Asher, Jeff Jasper

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

A reduced conflict U-turn (RCUT) intersection eliminates left-turn and through movements from the minor road. Instead, drivers must turn right onto the main road and complete a U-turn at a downstream median opening. Recognized by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) as a proven safety countermeasure, RCUT intersections have reduced fatal and injury crashes 22 – 63%. Despite more than 35 RCUT intersections in operation across Kentucky, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) lacked specific guidance for their planning, design, construction, and operation.

This project, conducted by the Kentucky Transportation Center (KTC) in cooperation with KYTC, addressed this gap through a comprehensive …

Traumatic knee injury leads to posttraumatic osteoarthritis (PTOA) and significant skeletal muscle weakness, resulting in chronic disability. The current standard of care frequently fails to prevent musculoskeletal dysfunction, underscoring the need to identify therapeutic mechanisms of PTOA. Using an established preclinical anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) transection model of PTOA and leveraging an innovative SPiDER-senescence-associated β-galactosidase stain to discern senescent cells, we investigated cellular senescence at single-cell resolution and identified anti-inflammatory macrophages as a predominant contributor to the senescent cell burden in both muscle and knee joint after injury. Clearance of senescent cells using the senolytic dasatinib and quercetin (D + …

New Procedures Of Preserving Beet Tops, Hedvika Maskova, Jiri Havelik Jul 2026

New Procedures Of Preserving Beet Tops, Hedvika Maskova, Jiri Havelik

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

The possibility was tested of preserving chopped (homogenized) beet tops in experimental tower silos. The treatments without preservatives were compared with treatments using propionic acid (0.5 %) and allylisothiocyanate (1: 10,000). Silage quality, dry matter losses, and secondary fermentation 24, 72, 168, and 240 hours after unloading were determined. Chopping of beet tops was found to have a positive effect on the utilization of the silo volume and on the mechanization of silage handling, and to avoid the need of supplemental compaction. Allylisothiocyanate and propionic acid had a favourable effect on the preservation process and helped to cut losses caused …

[5,5]-Fused Anhydride, Thioanhydride, And Imide Derivatives Of Cyclopentadienyl Complexes, Uttam R. Pokharel, Sean Parkin, John P. Selegue

Chemistry Faculty Publications

A new approach to 5,5-fused heterocyclic derivatives of cyclopentadienylmanganese tricarbonyl and pentamethylruthenocene is presented. 1,2-Dicarbophenoxycyclopentadienyl complexes of manganese and ruthenium were hydrolyzed to 1,2-dicarboxylic acids. Oxalyl chloride converted the acids to chlorocarbonyls, which reacted with bis(trimethylsilyl)sulfide to give the cyclopentadienyl-fused thioanhydrides. Alternatively, dehydration of the diacids with trifluoroacetic anhydride closed the diacids to cyclopentadienyl-fused anhydrides. Treatment of the anhydrides with p-toluidine followed by oxalyl chloride led to cyclopentadienyl-fused carboxylic imides. This approach enables direct comparison of electron-deficient Mn(CO)3 and electron-rich Ru(Cp*) coordination environments on the 5,5-fused heterocycles. Spectroscopic data reveal systematic downfield NMR shifts and higher infrared carbonyl stretching …

Soft Korsi: An Embodied Spatial Interior System For Communal Warmth, Faezeh Panahandeh Jun 2026

Soft Korsi: An Embodied Spatial Interior System For Communal Warmth, Faezeh Panahandeh

Graduate Final Projects

ABSTRACT

Soft Korsi: An Embodied Spatial Interior System for Communal Warmth reconceptualizes the historic Iranian Korsi as an innovative textile-based interior system. Traditionally, the Korsi functioned not only as a heating device but also as a spatial, material, cultural, and embodied system, which brought people together around a shared warm focal point. The integration of a heat source, textile coverings, floor seating arrangements, closeness of bodies, and domestic traditions related to warmth made possible a collective experience, rather than an individual or environmental one.

This design project seeks to address the disappearance of the Korsi from contemporary domestic environments as …

Alternative Treatment Systems To Increase The Drying Rates Of Green Forage Crops, W E. Klinner, O D. Hale Jun 2026

Alternative Treatment Systems To Increase The Drying Rates Of Green Forage Crops, W E. Klinner, O D. Hale

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Forms of conditioning treatment are being developed that aim to minimize the barrier effect of the crop cuticle without sacrificing too much of the structural strength of the herbage. Effective surface abrasion and favorable windrow structure can be achieved with steel-spoked rotors, which are now beginning to be offered commercially. More recently, plastic brushes have been developed because the higher population density and yielding ability of the crop-engaging elements, plus the absence of metal components, appeared to offer additional advantages. Four different brush conditioner systems have been evaluated in the laboratory and in replicated field experiments. Tufted brushes using trilobar …

Organic molecules exhibiting second-scale room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) in the red/near-infrared are particularly rare because low-energy excited states that are characteristic of these chromophores are susceptible to nonradiative deactivation. Here, we observe second-scale red RTP from contorted hexabenzocoronene (cHBC) embedded in a rigid polymer. This RTP is uniquely efficient as approximately 23% of the steady-state photoluminescence originates from triplets. We propose that this efficient triplet generation stems from intersystem crossing (ISC) that outcompetes symmetry-forbidden fluorescence. Density functional theory and time-dependent density functional theory calculations suggest that ISC occurs from the lowest energy singlet state of cHBC into a nearly resonant triplet …

Markey Cancer Center Faculty Publications

Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) remains a leading cause of cancer-related mortality worldwide, yet its molecular drivers are not fully defined. Emerging evidence highlights the importance of tumor-stroma interactions mediated by secreted glycoproteins. However, the mechanisms by which cancer cells regulate the secretion of these protumorigenic proteins remain largely unknown. Endoplasmic reticulum-resident (ER-resident) N-glycan-processing enzymes regulate proper protein folding, a prerequisite for glycoproteins to exit the ER and undergo secretion. By evaluating their prognostic significance in lung tumors and conducting functional screening in lung cancer cells, we identify α-glucosidase II (α-Glc II) as a key regulator of NSCLC progression. α-Glc …

We present a novel method for extracting the energy spectrum of ultracold neutrons from magnetically induced spin depolarization measurements using the n2EDM apparatus. This method is also used to exploit sensitivity to the storage properties of the materials used to trap ultracold neutrons, specifically, whether collisions are specular or diffuse. To do so, we utilize tomat simulation to map storage properties to correlation times of the ultracold neutrons to induced magnetic nonuniformities. We highlight the sensitivity of this new technique by comparing the two different storage chambers of the n2EDM experiment, which host different ultracold neutron energy spectra. This method …

Scalable fabrication of uniform perovskite films is a critical bottleneck for large-area perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs), hindered by coffee-ring formation and heterogeneous crystallization upon scaling. Here, we report a multimodal solvent-engineering strategy enabling highly uniform films via ambient blade coating combined with vacuum-assisted solvent evaporation. Incorporating N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) and acetonitrile (ACN) into a dimethylformamide (DMF)-based system synergistically modulates evaporation dynamics: It suppresses macroscopic solute segregation through Marangoni flow-induced redistribution, while tuning precursor coordination to regulate nucleation/phase conversion and promote radiatively efficient film formation. Consequently, the ternary formulation yields films with improved uniformity, reduced trap densities, and enhanced radiative efficiency. Near-infrared …

Kytc Crash Modification Factor Recommendation List Online Tool, William Staats, Reginald Souleyrette, Teng Alex Wang, Mohammad Zana Majidi

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

Transportation practitioners use crash modification factors/functions (CMFs) to calculate the number of crashes expected once a countermeasure has been implemented. When evaluating design alternatives, CMFs can be used in conjunction with safety performance functions (SPFs) to derive crash predictions. The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) maintains the CMF Clearinghouse as a repository for CMFs. Contributions are submitted by researchers across the U.S., Canada, and throughout the world. Typically, individual countermeasures are associated with multiple CMFs. Some CMFs only apply to a specific facility or crash types. CMF quality varies, and some only apply to a specific facility and/or crash types, regions, …

Development Of Kytc’S Context Classification Network, Jill Asher, Megan White, Eric Green, Christopher Van Dyke

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

Transportation agencies have adopted context-based classification systems that classify roadways based on the surrounding environment and user types. This offers a more comprehensive and multimodal perspective than traditional functional classification. While the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) has begun using project-level context classification, the agency will benefit from introducing network-level context classification. This will improve guidance, enhance project prioritization, and support the development of projects that better address the needs of all users. Responding to this need, Kentucky Transportation Center (KTC) researchers, in conjunction with KYTC staff, created a GIS-based model to build a context classification network that covers all state-maintained …

Adeno-associated viruses (AAVs) have emerged as promising vectors for gene therapy due to their non-pathogenic nature and ability to transduce various cell types efficiently. In recent years, there has been an increasing effort to optimize the production and purification of AAV to support clinical applications; however, challenges exist in affinity ligand design, synthesis, and characterization. Understanding the binding interactions of these viruses with functional molecules is pivotal for the development of affinity-based separation methods of AAVs. Classical methods to measure thermodynamic parameters such as Isothermal Titration Calorimetry (ITC) are challenging to employ in these scenarios, as the concentrations of the …

Chemical Structure Representation Standardization Is Needed To Generalize Metabolite-Pathway Involvement Prediction Across Kegg, Reactome, And Metacyc Knowledgebases, Erik D. Huckvale, Hunter N.B. Moseley

Markey Cancer Center Faculty Publications

Background/Objectives: Due to the utility of knowing the pathway involvement of metabolites detected in biological experiments, knowledgebases such as the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG), Reactome, and MetaCyc have annotated compound entries to specific pathways defined by the knowledgebase. However, these compound-pathway annotations are largely incomplete and are costly to obtain experimentally or curate from published scientific literature. This metabolite-pathway annotation incompleteness problem is amenable to machine learning (ML)-based solutions. But to date, no machine learning model has been trained on all three knowledgebases to maximize its performance and robustness. This may be due to inconsistencies in chemical …

The Dot/Icm type IV secretion system (T4SS) is essential for Legionella pneumophila infection, but its in situ architecture and mechanism remain incompletely understood. Using cryo-electron tomography, we performed subtomogram averaging and 3D classification to resolve structural heterogeneity within the complex. We identified multiple assembly states of the inner membrane complex, including a fully assembled form with a hexamer-of-dimers DotO ATPase and symmetry mismatches between subcomplexes. A composite in situ model revealed a central channel above the inner membrane, likely used for substrate secretion. Imaging of infected macrophages showed T4SSs tethered to host vacuoles and extracellular vesicle release, suggesting additional effector …

Brine Solidification And Metals Sequestration Using Lignocellulosics, Frank Kvietok May 2026

Brine Solidification And Metals Sequestration Using Lignocellulosics, Frank Kvietok

World of Coal Ash Proceedings

Coal ash has historically been used as a convenient, on-site solidification material for brines generated from flue gas desulfurization at power plants. As alternate utilization scenarios are developed for coal ash, lignocellulosic (wood-based) sorbents can serve as a highly efficient substitute for the solidification process. Results will be shared for a variety of different brine types: thermally reduced, thermally reduced and neutralized, and reverse osmosis. In addition to solidification performance, which demonstrated a 3-4x mass of liquid vs mass of sorbent factor, studies were conducted to quantify the strength of binding to the wood-based sorbent for a broad range of …
