Empirical Validity Of The Okun’S Law: Evidence From Indonesia, Chrisnina Sutopo-Putri
Empirical Validity Of The Okun’S Law: Evidence From Indonesia, Chrisnina Sutopo-Putri
International Review of Business and Economics
This paper reinvestigates the validity of the Okun’s Law on its inverse relationship between unemployment rate and real GDP growth rate in Indonesia using annual data. The sample period spans from 1984 through 2019 with 36 observations. Data are obtained from the International Monetary Fund (www.imf.org). The time series data distributions of both variables are near-normal in their mean-to-median ratio, accompanied by relatively high standard deviations. To provide linear and unbiased estimates parameters, the Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) is utilized to estimate regressions (1) and (2). The slope-coefficients provide evidence of very weak inverse relationship between the variables …

Economic Effects Of Pandemic On Us And Indian Economies With Policy Actions In 2019-2023: A Comparative Analysis, Kishore Kukarni Dr., Amitabh S. Dutta
International Review of Business and Economics
COVID 19 pandemic that started in February/March 2019, with happenings in Yuwan, China spread like a wildfire all over the world. All countries faced one of the worst economic challenges in recent centuries if not ever in the history of the mankind. Early predications were so severe and devastating that some forecasters predicted a death-toll of 100 million all over the world, as the virus was not only spreading fast but also had no solution for its serious fatal effects. It was evident that the patients were dying before getting any effective treatments and many of them were elderly individuals. …
Selecting A Measurement System: Using Measurement System Potential Approval Criteria, Karl D. Majeske
Selecting A Measurement System: Using Measurement System Potential Approval Criteria, Karl D. Majeske
International Review of Business and Economics
This paper presents the results of a manufacturer’s quest to identify a measuring strategy during process development. Standard Measurement Systems Analysis (MSA) criteria provide a common framework to evaluate a gauge’s ability to produce data that fairly represents the quality characteristics that describe a part’s fitness for use. Here, MSA criteria, as well as hypothesis tests of precision and bias, are used to compare to two alternative measurement systems. Ultimately, to compare the two systems, measures of MSA criteria are developed that reflect the potential the criteria could reach by eliminating operator-to-operator gauge error.
Misgivings In Measuring Happiness, Sudhanva Char
Misgivings In Measuring Happiness, Sudhanva Char
International Review of Business and Economics
According to a resolution of the UN General Assembly (Resolution 66/281), March 20th is observed annually as International Day of Happiness. A nation’s overall success is measured by people’s happiness, the litmus test. The World Happiness Report (WHR) states there is consensus about measuring happiness, whereas, happiness is idiosyncratic and its connotation differs from culture to culture, language to language, and even person to person. Personal ‘space’ in all spheres matters, and so do democracy or dictatorship, all factors leading to mismeasures of happiness scores. And so, there are paradoxes in happiness rankings in WHR. Economists have yet to …

Leading An Open Revolution: Promoting Awareness Of Open Resources Through An Interdisciplinary Learning Community, Kelly Banyas, Marleen Cloutier, Colleen Farry
Collaborative Librarianship
This article discusses the case study of an interdisciplinary faculty learning community (FLC) focused on open practices and resources. The community, which was facilitated by three academic librarians, explored the case as a framework for open outreach and advocacy on a university campus. Composed of participants across disciplines and academic departments, the FLC created a setting for librarians and teaching faculty to explore open education topics together from divergent perspectives and degrees of experience. In this article, the authors present the FLC case as a collaborative model for forging relationships on campus and consider its effectiveness as an outreach and …

Connecting Fragmented Support On Campus: Growing Research Data Services Programs Through Collaboration, Patricia B. Condon, Thea P. Atwood, Catherine Derose
Collaborative Librarianship
Research data services are provided by multiple units across and beyond the library, which is why communication and collaboration are paramount to building support for researchers. By exploring how Research Data Services (RDS) programs can function in the fragmented landscape of research support on campuses, we outline the role of collaboration in building programs. In this paper, we discuss building an RDS program by emphasizing three strategies for collaboration: collaborating within the library, collaborating across campus, and collaborating externally with those without direct ties to your organization. The aim of this paper is to offer attainable examples and strategies for …
Partners In Graduate Student Retention: A Library-Led Outreach Collaboration, Ashley R. Lierman
Partners In Graduate Student Retention: A Library-Led Outreach Collaboration, Ashley R. Lierman
Collaborative Librarianship
Past research has indicated that social connection with their community is an important factor in the retention of graduate students. To help address this need, a Rowan University librarian led an interdepartmental team of collaborators from across campus in developing a series of outreach events specifically for graduate students, which evolved over time to include more and richer programming and opportunities for socialization. This article describes the evidence basis for these events’ inception, the essential components of each iteration of the event and its programming, and the results of holding these events, including both their successes and their failures. Recommendations …

Buddhist Nationalism: Rising Religious Violence In South Asia, Eva Chappus, Benjamin Nourse
Buddhist Nationalism: Rising Religious Violence In South Asia, Eva Chappus, Benjamin Nourse
DU Undergraduate Research Journal Archive
Buddhist nationalism has contributed to expanding religious violence in many South Asian countries. The roots of this violent form of nationalism are complex and multi-faceted, making a clear solution difficult to achieve. Thailand, Sri Lanka, and Burma are some of the most pressing and violent case studies in South Asia today and can illustrate the reliance of Buddhist nationalists on ethnoreligious identities to relegate non-Buddhists to second-class status, to the point of massive acts of violence and aggression. This paper seeks to illuminate the complex social history driving the rise of Buddhist nationalism in these countries, particularly strong military-religion relationships, …
Seed Aid: The Importance Of Local Decision-Making, Eva Chappus
Seed Aid: The Importance Of Local Decision-Making, Eva Chappus
DU Undergraduate Research Journal Archive
This policy paper focuses on the disconnect between donor and recipient states regarding seed aid and the implications of seed aid on local agricultural sovereignty and sustainability; it proposes that a reevaluation of international seed aid policies is needed. International food security organizations and food aid donors should prioritize local seeds for seed aid purposes to support local biodiversity and food sovereignty, and the stability and sustainability of local agricultural systems in the long term. Making adequate and accurate assessments of situations is crucial, and sourcing locally is an integral aspect of supporting local seed systems. The fundamental problem with …

2017 Charlottesville Riots – Media Coverage Paper Media And Terrorism, Abran Bartlett-Miller, Kareem El Damanhoury
DU Undergraduate Research Journal Archive
This paper intended to dissect the similarities and differences of media coverage for a very significant recent event--the 2017 Charlottesville "Unite the Right" riots and anti-racism protests. A focal moment within this series of events is the car attack by perpetrator James Alex Fields Jr., a white-supremacist responsible for the death of one woman and countless other injuries. The analysis reflects the coverage of this event through the lens of MSNBC and Fox News, two politically contrasting domestic news sources. An emphasis on media framing, which is loosely how media is manipulated to make the consumer think about a certain …
Asymptotic Behavior Of Random Defective Parking Functions, John T. Mann, Zecheng You, Mei Yin
Asymptotic Behavior Of Random Defective Parking Functions, John T. Mann, Zecheng You, Mei Yin
DU Undergraduate Research Journal Archive
Suppose that m drivers each choose a preferred parking space in a linear car park with n spots. In order, each driver goes to their desired spot and parks there if possible. If the spot is already occupied then the car parks in the first available spot after that; if no such spot is available then the car leaves the street without parking. When m > n, there will always be defects–cars that are not able to park. Building upon the work in Cameron et al. "Counting defective parking functions," we introduce a multi-shuffle construction to defective parking functions and …

Noise Peddler: An Exploration Of The 21st Century Pedalboard, Danny Bright, Lee Westwood
The 21st Century Guitar
Noise Peddler is a practice-based research project exploring the 21st century guitar pedalboard as composition and performance interface. Recent growth in the guitar pedal industry has seen a notable increase in popularity of the pedal platform, expansion in the number of manufacturers, the scope of effects available, and solidification of the concept of the pedalboard. The widespread adoption of MIDI/CV control, alongside the packaging of increasingly experimental and complex processing into stompbox formats has expanded the pedalboardʼs potential as a flexible canvas for the creation of unconventional guitar sounds. Performers such as Sarah Lipstate, Nels Cline and Ed OʼBrien have …
